  1. Multi-boot? on Blu-Ray Drive For Apple Notebooks · · Score: 2, Funny

If the only problem is lack of software, does it work if you boot into Windows, I wonder?

Although, since all my HD movies are in the other format, it's kind of moot anyway. Mind you, some would say that about my not owning a MacBook, too.

That's what I didn't get in the story. In DC continuity, Kryptonite is just fine to handle if you're only human. So how have these scientists established that it wouldn't hurt a fictional alien?

Green & Black's for the win. Utterly effing gorgeous chocolate, pretty reasonably priced, and the fact that it's (1) certified organic by the Soil Association and (2) certified fair trade by the Fairtrade Foundation is merely a bonus.

Seriously, the stuff is so good they could easily charge that without the ethical plaudits.

  7. Re:And, as we all know... on 25th Anniversary of the Sinclair ZX Spectrum · · Score: 1

Actually, it's worse than being spoilt; I was a late adopter. By the time we could afford a Speccy at all (1984) the vast, vast majority of software was 48k-only, so the 16k one was a false economy.

As for resolution, it's all a matter of taste, really. I hated the blocky look of the C64, and would happily sacrifice a bit of colour in compensation.

  8. Re:And, as we all know... on 25th Anniversary of the Sinclair ZX Spectrum · · Score: 3, Funny

I'd have said the Speccy was too small and light to make a decent doorstop. You'd be much better off with the C64 for that. Mind you, a PET would do the job even better.

  9. Re:And, as we all know... on 25th Anniversary of the Sinclair ZX Spectrum · · Score: 1

Only eejits bought the 16k version of the Speccy. We all had the 48k. Most C64 games only ran with a horizontal resolution of 160, as supposed to our 256 horizonal pixels, and that colour-clash side-effect gave a far, far superior resolution-to-memory-size footprint almost entirely negating the missing 16k of memory, particularly if you were doublebuffering.

And the rubber keyboard was a thing of beauty. I much preferred it.

Of course, I was a complete fanboy, but there you go.

GT looks lovely, I agree. It still suffers from the standard GT problem of a vague lack of connection between the cars and the road surface for some reason (like they've been CG'd over the top of a seperately rendered ground) but it's a very nice car nonetheless.

Motorstorm I think suffered a bit from the hype. It's nice, but not as good as I'd been led to believe, and no better than DIRT or the new Sega Rally really.

But they're both just talking graphically - they're both fine from a gameplay issue. Unlike F1 '06, which is twitchy as hell, and nowhere near as good as their '04 version on the PS2. Shiny, shiny mind you.

Personally, I read the statement as merely suggesting that, years ago when they were planning the Mii idea (you know, so it would be actually ready with the launch of the Wii console, rather than a year later, after everyone and his dog has suggested they'd buy the 360 version of any multiplatform game for the superior online integration) they thought about doing a massive Second-Life style persistent world, and decided it wasn't worth it, as it wouldn't appeal to their main casual demographic.

Mind you, the whole Home thing does just sound like massive Animal Crossing without the cute graphics, so who knows?

I'd guess it doesn't sound as good as your B&O, no. But it's probably _good enough_ to turn your lovely vinyl albums into a bunch of lossy audio files to go on the portable music player of your choice with less faffing than trying to connect your PC to the hi-fi.

  19. Re:So let me get this straight... on Return of the Vinyl Album · · Score: 1

CDs CAN sound absolutely marvellous. With a decent player, and a well-mastered disc, they're every inch as good as what vinyl can do.

However, most CDs these days are compressed to death, distorting horribly as they hit the hard digital noise ceiling. It's bloody horrible how it sounds, so people are wanting the un-ruined version that appears on the vinyl, and also HD-audio (SACD or DVD-A, depending on label) releases.

Also, just because you like the sound of vinyl doesn't mean you haven't got an iPod or equivalent. Analogue output to the hi-fi, digital to the PC.

  20. Re:USB? on Return of the Vinyl Album · · Score: 2, Interesting

Only if you use that crappy deck as your only one. The big downside that made me switch to a primarily CD-based setup was that I got sick of buying albums on both formats, just so I could put it on my iPod for portable listening.

Once I had a decent dedicated CD player the sound quality is just fine, too. I still like my vinyl, but it's just for when I feel like faffing around.

Blu-Ray rips showed up a good month ago, yes. One of them ABSOLUTELY DID NOT fall onto my 360 while I was trying to find out where on Earth my legitimate copy got lost in the post for a week. 720p WMV with 5.1 audio that fits perfectly on a single-layer DVD and looks bloody marvellous. APPARENTLY.

  22. Re:Bethesda and the Time Bombs on Bethesda Investigates Shivering Isles Bug · · Score: 1

The 360 got its shader update the Thursday or Friday before Shivering Isles went up (so before the Live downtime the other week, if that helps you). If you've played the game since then, that was why it had to perform an update.

I think it makes a big difference, but others don't think it makes as much of one. The main change is in outdoor areas - the Level-Of-Detail method for bringing foliage in from a distance is much smoother.

For the record, it still doesn't make things look quite as nice as the PS3, and that release also has shorter transition times from indoor to outdoor, as it dumps everything onto the hard drive. But the framerate seems a bit more solid on the 360, which is nice.

  25. Re:Does anyone even broadcast 1080p.... on 1080p, Human Vision, and Reality · · Score: 1

Not all of us bought our TVs in the last 6 months. Last summer, the price premium on a 1920x1080 screen was too high to justify, for most people. I'm quite happy anyway, as the Wife Acceptance Factor (combined with the Bank Manager Factor) restricted me to my 32" LCD anyway. I don't sit close enough to it to make any point for a higher res than 1360x768; HD-DVD looks gorgeous on it anyway.

But sure, the difference between 720p and 1080p isn't visible on all setups. Since every HD-DVD has a 1080p signal, why not have it anyway? If I had £1500 to spend now and no controls on what I could have in the living room, I'd get a 1080p-capable set, sure.
