My thought when I saw the name is that it comes from Dr. Seuss - "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish"...
"On our way be saw a Nook. On his hat he had a hook. On his hook he had a book. On his book was "How to Cook". But a Nook can't read and a Nook can't cook, so what good to a Nook is a hook cook book?"
As much as many people would like to think otherwise, public policy is set by elected officials who may take religion into consideration, but also must consider economic trade offs and cultural issues. Throw in the usual paranoid claptrap about corporations if you want, it doesn't change the facts.
Just because the Democrats did not rush headlong and unquestionably into the public policy positions championed by the James Dobsone and G.W. Bushes of the world doesn't mean they were conducting a war on religion.
If religion is unpopular today it is because of the arrogant, dogmatic and privileged folks who stand at its door. Add to that the people who embark on regular crusades, telling people they are stupid and ignorant for not listening to them, it's no wonder students shy away from religion.
Substitute two words, and your argument becomes the "arrogant, dogmatic" statement you are railing against.
Of all the examples to give for potential applications, they choose monitoring glucose levels? What about that application requires augmented reality, related to vision? That could be an iPhone app with a Bluetooth-enabled patch anywhere on the body that periodically took a drop of blood and analyzed it.
I appreciated your examples of items that are "good enough". This is also how I feel about most of my purchases.
I disagree, however, with your statement that we "compromise quality" in making these choices. Juran (an American whose ideas on quality helped drive the post-war Japanese manufacturing boom) defines quality as "fitness for use". In his and many other quality-researchers' definitions of quality, quality requirements are subjective and different for each person. I.e. my "fitness for use" is different than Bill Gates "fitness for use" (interpret that in BOTH it's intended meanings!).
Bottom line: If your personal requirements for a car are, seats 4, costs less than $25k, gets >30 mpg, the Matrix is higher quality than the Lexus, based on "fitness for use" to you.
While I see and appreciate your sarcasm in regards to "Darksuckers", you are actually *absolutely correct* that AC units are "Heatsuckers". "Cold" is not something you can manipulate... the kinetic energy of particles that we call "Heat" is what is trasferred by air conditioners.
The EESU is obviously less mass-dense, but the energy density (kWh/in^3) is not much better than Li-Ion. You still may not be able to add more range to the car without taking away from cabin space.
I was at the Power Gen trade show last week in Orlando, and it was amazing how FEW companies were there promoting green/renewable/clean energy! I am taking part in an environmental sustainability class working on a masters degree, and I was trying to find a company "Doing it Right" for my final class report. I found ONE company in the whole show that was doing more than just playing lip service to environmental sustainability. Many companies were advertising "clean energy" but they were peddling filters or process efficiency improvements for $fossil_fuel turbines or boilers. The "Renewable Energy Pavilion" was about 1000 sf out of the 1M+ sf of the show floor!
The real showstopper for me was the Industrial Info Resources (industry research company) reception on the second night of the show: Cirque du Soleil performers, open bar for 4 hours, free food, live band, and scantily clad "Party Motivators" walking around... for about 4000 visitors! My colleagues and I estimated this cost them $300-400k, despite the current economic climate. Think they are about to invest in replacing their current model?
No matter which way you look at it the telephone number won't go away.
No matter which way you look at it, the horse and buggy won't go away.
And, in many areas in the world, including places in the industrialized world (driven through Amish country lately?), they haven't!
posting to remove bad mod... should have been +1 Insightful
Look at the picture again... notice the vertical, planar sign next to the light? See how that, too, is covered with snow?
Even a "truly bottomless hood" is no use against a good whipping wind and some kinds of snow.
Posted from the vicinity of snowy Syracuse, NY.

I'm surprised they didn't make the shorter leap from Jomax --> Jo Mama
Imagine the fun commercials they could have made with that name!

How does an interface for the eye help here?

Wouldn't that be the "Assimilus" Package in this case?
You win!
Someone needs to find this girl's mother and have her read Pantero Blonco's post to her. Maybe then it will sink in what a collosal jerk she is being.

Given the general "porn" theme active here, did anyone else read this as "GMILFs"?
Not only is this troll-nonsense, it is a Slashdot-only troll-nonsense!
ninnle linux -slashdot is a "Google Whack"! (if you stretch the rules a bit)
Exactly zigziggityzoo... FTFPDF:
EESU (286.56 lb) / Li-Ion (752 lb) = 38%
but...
EESU (4541 in^3) / Li-Ion (5697 in^3) = 80%
The EESU is obviously less mass-dense, but the energy density (kWh/in^3) is not much better than Li-Ion. You still may not be able to add more range to the car without taking away from cabin space.

This is the Killer-App we've been waiting for to justify IPv6!
