    I fail to have every seen a need for the over rated though.

    Sometimes a post is insightful and interesting but not quite +5. You can't mod it down as redundant, flamebait or troll and that's when you mod it overrated so the post can still get a respectful +3 Insightful. But IMO this is highly off topic (not your post but the direction the discussion is heading).

    I'd like to add that using 3d graphic card (Nvidia CUDA/GPGPU) would really speed things up. I ran into that the other day when researching possible methods for 3d navigation in robots using 2 cams.

    GPU CV reports 100x speedup on nvidia.com

    I don't know enough about the architectures to say which one is better (x86-64 vs IA-64) but backwards compatibility with x86 is a big win for x86-64.

    Intel Itanium never took off / didn't replace Xeon

    The PowerPC architecture was dumped by Apple and failed to challenge Intel in the PC market in a big way.

    AMD is consistently beaten by Intel in the mobile marketplace.

    Firefox could have been pre-installed by the OEM. If you bought an OEM/Retail license it might have been possible to choose to install IE in the installation process (not mandatory).

    Only if they're used correctly.

    A code like $query = "CALL mystoredprocedure($data)"; is just as vulnerable to injection attacks as other queries.

    While the stored procedure might be safe the code executing the SQL is not. One could easily input " somedata); SELECT * from something;-- "

    One method I use when securing SQL is to run scripts in a least privileged mode, ie. the script db user can not drop tables etc..

    On our ancient desktop machines (Think 1.8ghz pentium 4's with 512 megs of ram) performance is a lot worse now than before we switched.

    Last time I checked Trend Micro won't install on machines with less than 1GB ram.

    I think you're missing the point. The point is basically the ability to remove Internet Explorer so OEMs can install the browser of their choice without IE.

    Or in a car analogy:
    Imagine that you couldn't replace your electric windows with better ones, only install additional electric windows. Imagine that the default installation is so shitty that many people actually want to switch (I haven't heard of many who change electric windows manufacturers) but the default installation can't be removed at all. As there's little point of having 2 types of electric windows installed at the same time you'd arguably get fewer customers.

    That's what Opera is bitching about. I'd be happy to remove Internet Explorer if I could.

    You can sign in with your Google Account or Yahoo! Account. Personally I don't think a legitimate site imitating a UI design that has worked pretty well for Google should be considered phishing.

    Same here in Iceland. There is no laws on downloading copyrighted material. There is how ever laws on sharing/uploading.

    There was a big fuzz in the media because of an Icelandic torrent site that eventually got shut down (FYI: the case is still in court). A lawyer for Smais (equivalent of RIAA) even made it crystal clear that they couldn't prosecute downloaders because it wasn't illegal.

    Where I live a breathalyzer test is only valid evidence for 6 hours. If the cops can't take a blood sample to prove you're drunk within that time frame they've got nothing on you.

    The blood sample can be retested etc...

    Isn't the collision of the cypher one attack vector in brute force cracking?

    I allowed my friend to test his brute force attack on my computer once, he didn't get the password but got another that gave the same hash.

    While I have to admit that hacking the botnet itself is worth huge geek points, they may still be able to do a lot of good for the internet with the work they've done so far without running afoul of the law. If users download and run it themselves, that is authorisation right there (especially if the software does what they claim it does).

    That's probably one of the biggest issues. The way I see it most computer users are incapable/stupid and will neither not realize that they're infected or know how to fix it even with proper instructions.

    I didn't RTFA, but if they hacked the botnet I can imagine a solution that uses the botnet itself to download the cleaning and patching software... Of course that would be illegal but I'm just sayin...

    No it won't.

    BigTable and relational DBMS are very different - neither will replace the other in the near future.

    Custom hardware at Google isn't unheard of. TFA doesn't state if the router is to be sold as a competing product or if it's just going to be used internally. It's just a rumor, don't hold your breath
