  1. Re:Show me vs a real DB engine on MemSQL Makers Say They've Created the Fastest Database On the Planet · · Score: 1

I've been an oracle dev/dba for coming up for 20 years and I find what "locks" people into oracle is the features in the db. I've used most of the popular dbs and oracle still out-features them all. Less code for me to write and that's a good thing. It's horses for courses and for some jobs oracle is the way to go. I may no comment about Oracle's non-db products as a lot of them are rubbish.

  2. Which Markets? on Weird Al To Release Songs As He Records Them · · Score: 1

I daresay this will be another US-only release. I just wish everything was global, but it's still so dreadfully segmented. Of course it'll be available by other means on the days it is released.

  3. Re:Labels or Folders? on Free IMAP On Gmail · · Score: 1

I've got a couple of labels that start with an asterisk (*), so they sort to the top of a labels list, but although I have messages with these labels, the messages don't get retrieved. Has anyone else seen this?

  4. Watermark ? on Partial Victory for Perfect 10? · · Score: 2, Interesting

What if google offered a watermarking app that allowed you to easily watermark an image that flagged it for do not index ? It would need to resist removal.

  5. US Only Skype Version on Groups Slam FCC on Internet Phone Tap Rule · · Score: 1

Could skype make a version that is only available in the US and is tappable ? There's no reason when I call here from Australia to some other Non-US country that the us feds should be listening to me. For years we've had NONUS sections in debian etc... This shouldn't be any different ?

  6. Australia next please ! on Google Maps, Local Expand To UK · · Score: 1

Compared to any offerings we have for this country, (Yes, I'm talking to you Whereis) Google Maps is sorely needed. Can anyone recommend an Aussie site that's better than whereis ?

  7. Commander Data on Camel-Riding Robots · · Score: 0

Call me a Star Trek nerd, but how many sports would an android of Commander Data's ability be awesome at ? I can't think of too many individual sports he could be beaten at... (maybe swimming ??) and he'd be invaluable at the team level. Plus he'd be too altruistic to accept money and he'd just play for your team for free.

  10. Move along now on New Comet for the New Year · · Score: 1

Here in Gold Coast AU, this comet is entirely unimpressive in my 120mm refractor. Kind of like a diffuse ball of light with a slightly brighter center. Believe me if you miss this "naked eye" comet, don't lose any sleep !

  11. It is going to miss on 2004 MN4 Asteroid Odds Inching Up Again · · Score: 2, Interesting

  12. The Moon ? on 2004 MN4, Even Higher Probability · · Score: 1

I wonder if they search for asteroids that could possibly hit the moon ? If "the big one" hits the moon and causes it to break up, it will suck for us down here anyway.

  13. Re:NO MORE CHRISTMAS MUSIC! on Automatic Christmas Music · · Score: 1

If you lived in Australia, then Christmas Songs are not strange at all on hot summer days. Christmas day is typically one of the hottest days of the year here.

  14. Re:TV episodes from BitTorrent on TV Piracy is Next · · Score: 1

And add to this, anyone from outside the US who gets to watch stuff 6-12 months later. IIRC, the Friends finale hasn't actually aired here in .au yet. With bittorrent and a rss scraper, I get all the tv I need, ad-free and when I want to watch it.

  15. Re:Can it be adjusted for de facto speed limits? on Smart Cars Tell You About Road Signs · · Score: 1

I'm an Australian and for the most part we simply can't afford to speed. The speed cameras are very prevalant, and I could easily drive 60km on the highway, driving at 120 kph and lose my licence because of them. And in some states they actually double the fines and loss of points on your licence during certain holiday periods. So on the wrong day of the week driving 30 kph over the limit could cost you 8 points (we have 12 points on our licence) and $600 ! Speed limits are just very well enforced here !

  18. Vacuum cleaners and laptop keyboards on What Was Your Worst Computer Accident? · · Score: 1

OK.. This isn't really serious and didn't cost me $$$ but freaked me at the time. I had just taken ownership of a new Dell laptop when I managed to spill a small portion of coke on the keyboard. Not knowing how easy it was to remove the keys and wanting to get the coke out ASAP, I scanned the room looking for something to use. I spotted a VACUUM CLEANER. So I put the vacuum cleaner on maximum suck and aimed it at the coke affected area. It sucked the coke out and then, much to my horror, it sucked the capslock key right off ! After the immediate shock, I turned off the vacuum cleaner and managed to find the bits inside the bag - undamaged - and put it back together. Moral of the story: Vacuum cleaners and laptop keyboard DO NOT mix !
