If you had invested over 200 million dollars in a software product and tens of thousands on man-hours, don't you think you would want to protect that product from competition.
What few people seem to realise is that QuickTime is not just a "Player", it is a Media Layer. Ever heard of the QuickTime Media Layer (QTML).
The beauty of QuickTime is it doesn't actually do anything that the user interacts with. It only provides Media services to basically any application that support is. That why when QT is released, you will be able to do things like embed a streaming video of a television, in a Panorama of a room (With directional sound) and play it all from a MS Word document, or any other app that supports quicktime.
You can't just go and say "Oh, lets go a write QuickTime for (Insert OS)" Something as complex as QuickTime is not as easy as creating as your favourite text editor.
The codec are the least difficult part of Quicktime, cause all you have to do to add another codec is literally just plug it in. It is the framework that is a hard part.
Yes I know you *nix guys have a hard time getting the stuff you want. Yes I know it is a pain. I am a Mac user myself and I can tell you I know what a pain it is to try a get companies to recognise your platform. You guys are picking up a LOT os speed these days, and the quickest way to blow it, is to go bitching about companies that dont port stuff to *nix. Been there, done that.
The best way to go is to encourage Apple to port QT to Linux, not flame them for not porting it. That is the quickest way to get doors closed on you.
At the end of the day, Apple is a business which has to make the shareholders happy. Commercial companies MUST exist for the "Free" software market to grow, because people have to eat and 9 times out of 10, the guy that wrote or contributed to your favourite app, also works at a comercial comapany to put food on the table. Free software doesn't put food on the table. Free software does not grow trees. (But Apples do!)
Rememeber, support Apple if you want Quicktime. Otherwise that Apple will turn sour real fast.
The Quicktime File Format was chosen to be the BASIS for MPEG-4. The final version of MPEG-4 will incluse elements from MS's Advanced Streaming Format and others.
You know, sometimes Linux just does not cut it. It really gripes me when you Linux gurus just say "Linux is the only Operating System in the world, and everything else is just a toy or plain crap"
If you ask me, people like that are just as bad, if not worse than Microsoft.
Take off your blinkers Linux People! I have invested about 5 grand in a top-of-the-range PowerMac G3 with the intent of running OS X Server, and the one way to really piss me off and make me publically dispise "Insert You favourite OS here" Is to say that what I just bought is crap and I should have bought something else.
Every OS has a purpose. And I dont want to have to pay some 19 year old Linux geek to run my systems just because "Linux is better". Sometimes I think that the people coding Linux keep it hard to use so that all those "geeks" out there have a job!.
Just remember, every time you flame another OS, you piss someone off.
Does that mean that cars (which are a tool) shold have no design whatsoever and should all just be white boxes with four wheels, four seats and a steering wheel?

>Companies that stay in a niche market -- that do one thing and do it well -- are commendable and rare.
Thats because they always get taken over by the big guys. Take GoLive, they just got bought by Adobe. Apple know it can never be as big as MS. As Steve said, they (Apple) are just trying to make the best damn computers in the world, for a price. Apple could make computers that cained anything out there on the market, but you would pay BIG bucks for them. I think Apple should be commended for producing the machines they do.
As for advertising, show me ONE company that does not bend the facts in their favour when doing public demostrations and tv comercials.
Isn't that what companies do with geeks these days? You know, put a nice looking girl out on the front desk with a nice looking computer and stick the ugly geek with his ugly computer as far away from civilisation as possible!
If you think about it, it is basically the same thing.
And of course, Apple will just sit on it's arse and keep the design of the iMac the same, year after year after year!
NOT!!!!
Apple will be the one creating those "sleek, flat-screen monitors and cases the size of a casette player" - which they already created 6 years ago.
May I remind you of the "Apple Station" a prototype that never saw the light of day under Mike Splindler. It was sleek, it had a flat screen, it was small, I had a telephone built in and had wireless everything! NO WIRES! - apart from one power cable to the CPU and the phone line to the CPU. Even the damn printer was wireless!
Apple is the only company with the balls to "think different". If the the iMac had not come along, computers would still be beige! As always, the industry follows Apple!
>poor baby...why not get a toaster...they are easier to upgrade
Now thats a stupid comment. Why the hell should I have to unscrew things just to get at the inside. Give me one damn reason why computers should be complicated. (Apart from keeping people like you in a job)
>so ummm, you give them green and take away the floppy drive? good choice
The last time I used a damn floppy was when I needed to load Winblows with VirtualPC on to a new disk image. It is not our problem that PC's are too dumb to be able to boot from a CD, or just about any damn storage device you can plug into a mac.
If PC's ever finally do get the abilty to boot driectly from a CD, then you will see floppy drive dissappear from them to.
Floppy drives are dead! End of story. Give me an ORB any day!
Ummm, excuse me....

"Get with the program buddy."

Has he not thought about just saying,
"With all the stress of this legal thing, I have forgotten the procedure. Oh darn, now I can't tell anybody about it."
Nobody can prove or disprove this. After a year or so, he suddenly remembers and makes bucks out of it.
:-)
