  1. A case?! on Pentium 4 Requires New Case And Power Supply · · Score: 2
I don't need no stinking case!

    Merriam-Webster defines a case as:
1 a : a box or receptacle for holding something b : a box together with its contents
2 a : an outer covering or housing

My "case" covers nothing and only serves as a receptacle for dust! It sits wide open with various parts hanging out of it at any given time. Why is this P4 going to change anything?

And why is it newsworthy that this thing is following the rules of evolution? So it's the "rules of evolution" (which I didn't know we KNEW in the first place!!! thank you useful biology degree!) - computers will follow whatever rules we can figure out how to give them. Why is this different?

I'll consider it newsworthy when these things actually manage to make themselves into better survivalists with NO human help. Like maybe having the "momma" determine that only her "offspring" that locomote FAST seem to escape the wrath of the bored programmers' Koosh Shooter....

Fact is, GUYS society STILL teaches women to be both maleable and sensitive. As long as we're maleable, we're going to shun the definitive world of ones and zeros. As long as we're supposed to be so sensitive, most will choose not to be "different" (read: geeky).

IOW, Hitbox has been around for a long time (at least a few years) and does a pretty thorough job of tracking traffic patterns/etc. through sites...logs personal info like OS and such...and lots more then puts all that info onto an easy to read page for any marketing type folks. As a disabled person, I can attest that while computer make my life simpler in many ways, most of the VR software out there isn't up to snuff...It is geared towards the Able-bodied crowd and therefore usually requires significant hands-on work at some point in the process, be it during set-up or "correcting" things. In addition, many programs are only designed to type for a person. No thought is given as to how someone without limb function might actually GET TO Word or wherever to type. Software that lets you fully control your box and is actually affordable unfortunately seems to be a long ways off.

Is the Dragon Draggin'? The Rise and Fall of DragonSystems
    By Ben Mattlin

Last spring, I replaced my 3-year-old computer, which included a 5-year-old version of DragonDictate, the voice recognition program that allows you to talk to your computer instead of typing on the keyboard or using a mouse. What a miracle it had been when I first got it! I'm a functional quad--have little use of my arms and no use of my legs--and I'd been unable to find any truly effective way of interacting with a computer until DragonDictate came along.

I first saw a prototype demonstrated at a university laboratory in the 1980s, when it worked slower than catsup pouring out of a Heinz bottle and the complete setup ran about $20,000. Yet by 1991, a faster and more accurate DragonDictate was available for less than $5,000; thanks to the Department of Vocational Rehab, I was soon a grateful customer.

I had the greatest respect for the company itself, DragonSystems, a small Newton, Mass.-based software developer that had practically invented voice recognition technology. What a team they had working there!

Nowadays you can pick up a starter version of the software at any Best Buy store for about $20. But as DragonSystems has gone mainstream, it seems to have sold its soul. Service is no better or smarter than what you'd expect at McDonald's, and the program itself has become about as accessible and welcoming as a flight of stairs ...

  13. Palm feeling the heat???? on More Of Palm Product Line To Go Wireless · · Score: 2
Very recently I was exploring wireless options to support customer service for the start up I work for. I contacted Aether, a "wireless solutions provider" figuring that I'll be needing some combo of pagers/phones/PDA's. I was directed to a No. Cal. Service Rep who happened to have had his company recently absorbed into Aether...thus making him a fairly wealthy fellow who subsequently owns one of about every wireless device on the market (and some not yet released). He was very nice and started talking to me about REAL options..

He shunned PalmVII for their per dl and roaming fees. Etc. and Suggested that I get a Palm Vx and aquire a Minstrel modem from Omnisky. Cheaper, more reliable (more established network), better CS...you name it! I remember wondering at the time just how dominant was Palm VII feeling that they could justify the Service Plans being so outrageous.

A little more research revealed that PalmVII had, not more than 5 days prior, wised up and slashed/remodeled their Service plans.

Really makes me wonder just what prompted this latest descision on Palm's part and I'll be curious to watch prices and such for hardware and Service Plans as Palm starts to lose its "mini-monopoly". Capitalism at work, folks!
