    Exactly. For instance, where I live, the city is offering incentives to switch to low-flow models. They point out the monetary savings and ecological advantages, and then offer a $50 rebate on a bunch of models.

    The car has a range of 350 miles (560 kms) using two separate 350 psi hydrogen storage tanks.

    That's only 1 mile per PSI (and it takes 2 tanks to do it). That was achieved YEARS ago. Not impressed...

    My hometown (Calgary, AB) has a weather site that's built on the 1-Wire set. He's using a Java servlet and a plotting library to present the data from his station, and he's also scraping forecasts and data from other sites.

    You have to look at the alternate meanings of "\0". It's also referred to as null or nought. Now a creative interpretation could be made that GPL\0 actually means GPL(not). IANAL, but this might actually be a sound argument...

    To me, the feature I'd most like to see added is the ability to change the default line ending. If I'm working on a Windows machine, that doesn't mean I want CR/LF line endings in my code. It's should be a simple thing to add to the preferences, but they just haven't done it...

    That doesn't mean they're not reinsuring you though... Insurance companies spread the risk around. One company will reinsure another company's policies.

    I think you've come closest yet to spotting the real flaw in the argument, but just missed it. The key is that in bridge-building, or in construction, the engineer is the designer / overseer / authority on the job. He (or she) is NOT the person doing the actual construction.

    Somehow in the last decade, programmers have become referred to as "engineers". They're generally not. They're computer programmers. Sure, some (such as myself) may have engineering degrees, but that doesn't make us engineers. Accreditation by a recognized engineering association (which I don't have...), with all the responsibility and accountability of the profession go along with being an engineer. Software has very little in the way of accountability (EULAs anyone?), and as such, it's development would be more rightly considered skilled labour than engineering at least 99 times out of 100.

    Just saying eclipse is going to lead to a host of "But Java's too slow" replies. What makes eclipse such a great choice is the SWT components. Not only do you get a great IDE, but you get native speed in the components, with a changeable look & feel. And the "free" part helps too...
