huh? how the hell is that supposed to work? You can't stop a company growing in size. Imagine if an IBM or a Microsoft came up with the next generation of "ipod" like technologies. The type of tech that turned apple from a liquidation waiting to happen in the 90s to the most valuable tech company today. The company would double in size and exceed any market cap imposed by government.

Think you playing with fire referring PHP to the Access of the web :) but I know what you mean, there is nothing wrong with PHP and as a RAD tool it's fantastic. If your internet app is only generating web facing content then the PHP is great even for larger web apps.

But as soon as you need a multi-tiered architecture, clustering, caching, intra-connectivity, blah, blah, etc, etc - unfortunately PHP doesn't cut it at that level.

Well said! Any developer who lands up doubling as IT isn't do any real enterprise level development. Writing a couple of perl scripts or slapping together php site with a couple of forms is nothing compared to the n-tier solutions being developed in java/.net

Its laughable to compare the two and its rather sad when people do and don't know any better.

Having said that - the only exceptions I can think of is dev's that sysadmin their own servers - in small to medium companies this does tend to happen a lot.

That is pretty much the response of any shop or trader in any country that has a well established currency. Britain, France, Australia, etc all the same. I live in South Africa and the only place where one would even consider getting USD would be as a tip at a hotel catering for purely international guests.

I remember sitting in a McDonald's a couple of years ago and a group of American tourists arrived and couldn't understand why McDonald's didn't accept USD and the waitress had to spend 20 minutes explaining to them that not many countries accept USD as a form of payment outside the US.

Comes make international purchases in USD but otherwise everything else is local currency

But thats the problem, to a non-developer it doesn't matter if its closer or open source for somebody to benefit.

If I develop an app and make it available, the end-user who uses it has benefited. They don't care if its closed source or open source. For most people if the app is open source and I stop supporting it the app the useless to them and they will move onto something else.

Open source is only valuable to the development community, been able to share source code, design patterns, architecture designs is incredible valuable and beneficial.

Fair enough, but take into account that your average "alpha male" type engineer wouldn't care if business was running the show. The mindset of a large company doesn't switch from being business focused to engineering/technical focused because the CEO says so. It engineers and other technical people enforcing their authority and opinions.
