A DOS attack does not HAVE to be a ping flood.

It's anything that keeps you from being able to offer your service to the net, hence a "Denial of Service" attack.

Exploiting all the bandwidth of an ftp is certainly a DoS attack if it keeps others from being able to download those files, same as having thousands repeatedly hit a web site to take it down is a DoS.

Typcially DoS's are accomplished through pingfloods and the like, but that's not the only definition.

  4. Go for dreamcast, NOT ps2 for homebrew on Developing for the Playstation 2? · · Score: 4, Informative

The dreamcast has an EXCELLENT community built up around homebrew.

There is an awesome library/miniOS called KOS which gives you hooks into everything, you compile with an SH4/ARM crosscompiled gcc, and it's easy to do once you're set up.

    http://dcdev.allusion.net/

The PS2 homebrew crowd is JUST STARTING to get off the ground, but there's still problems of having to hack your ps2 with a soldering iron to get it to boot a cdr/etc, as well as very weak library support.

Homebrew console programming is very fun, but go for dreamcast, ESPECIALLY with how cheap dc's are right now.

There's even ways to get a serial cable hooked up, so you get debug info and can upload your program without burning a disc every revision.

Better support will not be found!

Considering that vmware is 300$, I doubt they even care about your typical linux enthousiast who wants to play some windows games. You could ALMOST buy a good cheap game playing box for that 300$ nowadays.

I work doing integrations, and would almost not be able to work without VMWare. We have gigs and gigs of vm's here, already set up. You can use it almost like a quick ghost, only you can have 2, 3, 4 on 1 machine, and don't have to blow away the base machine.

Plus if one goes down, just do like someone said earlier, doubleclick the .vmx and restart it.

If I need to do testing with version x of our product and version y of another product with theirs on linux and ours on winnt4 SP4, it's no problem. Just load up the vms, change the configs, and test away.

Buying copies of VMWare for game playing or to run Office is just rediculous! Talk about wrong tool for the wrong job...

Lowtax of sa.com (not the real site, i'm not gonna have him slashdotted too, you either know the site or you don't) has said that it costs him up to 2-4k$ a month in bandwidth fees. Possibly more, as he won't tell anyone an exact number.

Check out penny arcade's donation page with the meter... they're paying almost 5k$ a month.

This is out of pocket. Many are going to micropayments now, for obvious reasons.

But once you get more than 20-30 regular readers, cost of distribution becomes HUGE. It used to be that you could get some cheap ads to at least cover bandwidth, but unless you're willing to go popup crazy, ads will only pay a small %. The rest is out of these people's pockets.
