  1. movin' on up on Java as a CS Introductory Language? · · Score: 1
i'll offer my laymen's opinion on this subject. i've taken C in college. Just enough to learn all the syntax- data structures are still my master. I don't write programs using C... ever. College has taken the backseat for a while, however. I've been working as a netadmin for an ISP, and as such I shall speak what is useful to me, and also integrate some of the history we learned in CS. and I'll even try to take a stab at brevity (a first for so many of us!)

Back in the day, you learned machine code. Or assembly code, which I believe is the next layer up. Then everyone started learning C.

I think it's time to start learning something above C, something OOP. Java is the first choice cause, well... it's the first thing that comes to mind. Python would be another example, but Java lets you make more programs in the typical "I wanna add shiny GUIs to my windows app" sense of a program. C? C++? I can't speak for C++ as I don't know anything about it, but my (laymen) understanding is that C doesnt do object oriented stuff, and C++ does, but the learning curve is steeper than Java. So...

Seeing that (laymen!) a lot of this stuff seems to happen automatically now (memory allocation, et cetera) and that we've built these routines... let's move the next layer up.

See, eventually... we'll write programs in regular old English. It'll take forever to get there, but that's how I envision programming developing, as a person who "gets the basic idea, kinda".

So much for brevity. Hey, someone reply with some official names for those different layers I am referring to.

I could liken how I imagine the producers/writers felt to living up here in the North East... You get a giant blizzard (I believe the local term is "No'Eastah'byGod"), getting dressed up, shoveling the walk to get to the driveway, shoveling the driveway, and making it all the way down the last 8 feet til the street starts. You give up, hop in your car, and gun it backwards down the driveway. The car gets stuck, ALMOST all of the way through. You climb out through the sun roof, see that the car isn't going to get hit by oncoming traffic, declaring out loud "Ah forget it!", and walking back into the house so that you can feed your kids Ramen Noodles. Umm.. and stick some time travel in there. That makes my point sound a lot better. Thanks

  4. i just watched it on Voyager Eulogy · · Score: 1

i just watched a tape i made of it again... now, they started the thing at 8 pm, cause it was a double episode. i always thought it was really stupid for them to do it, cause EVERY SINGLE TIME they do that, I miss it. I think it would have been much smarter to start at 9 and go til 11. Sure, kids watch it, but the kids that watch it can stay up til 11. Or if they have to go to bed, at least they still wouldn't have missed the first hour. So I only saw 44 minutes of it, or whatever it trickles down to after commercials. You know what? I still haven't seen the first half, and I don't think it mattered at all. Short of wondering where Neelix was after seeing the last half TWICE (yeah, he musta been a favorite of mine) I think had the first half figured out within the first 15 seconds. I still don't know what happened in the first half, so if someone wants to tell me I actually missed something, please.

  5. my one gripe on Reviews:Shrek · · Score: 2

this isn't much of a spoiler. but dont read anymore if you dont wanna know anything more about the movie. the thing that bothered me in this movie was the kung fu scene... it was funny, but... it consisted entirely of rip offs of the final blow from so many kung fu movies we've known over the years. there's nothing wrong with this, it's just that i think the obligatory kung fu scene is turning into just that- obligatory. still, the fixing the hair in mid-matrix rotate makes up for my complaint.

P2P is such a buzzword. Let's just call it "sharing". Sure, there's a beautiful argument there in the definition, but hey, this is my post. So, really, they're looking for good reasons to share. Like every new technology, you start using it for what you do the most. Well, hate to break it to you, but a lot of the net is porn and music. There you go, they're going to use that for this new technology. As people use it, they will think of other reasons to use it, and finally it will become main stream. Anyways, I know P2P will become a regular part of the net, it's a great technology, it's simple, and as bandwidth increases, so will it's use. People all figured VCR owners for pornographers when they first came out. Would that be a fair statement today? Eh it's a specific example but it's true.

Half the Russians had English accents in the movie. When I was in high school, we did a mock trial using Fyodor Dostoyevsky's Crime and Punishment. I was Zassimov, the doctor asked by Rasumihin to look over Raskolnikov. We were in a real courthouse and everything. Anyways, I needed to pick up a Russian accent, so I rented The Hunt for Red October. Of course, I ended up grabbing Sean Connery's accent instead, and after the trial, not really knowing that I had completely ruined the accent with the Scottish base, my teacher approached me and told me that adding the verbal retardation was an interesting twist, and I got extra credit. I couldnt stop thinking of that during this movie, when a few of the Russian characters had their English accents going on.

If I had a couple little tiny windows floating up high and out of the way in my field of vision, I wouldn't have to turn around to make sure I'm not about to get sideswiped when I want to pass someone. It could also overlay the tach and speedometers. I don't know as if what isn't covered by the window is visable, though. That would be something that would need to be reworked, obviously. It might be illegal to do something like this while you're driving too. And just think of all the whales it would save each year- we could all take the sideview mirrors off our cars to cut down on drag!

So when we built the site out to show off what we had created, we never linked out of the site. Sure, we linked to our other sites. But we never linked out, never gave any hits away. We boxed outselves in. Seems like when you box youself in, nothing can flow through, and real quick, no one bothers to visit. I just read someone say something about "even the information in your head will be owned by someone else"... seems like half of us are building outwards, sharing, and building an open platform, and the other half of people are trying to create little cells out of this platform, trying to close it all up into a grid that has all these little areas that can't see each other. Boy, thats really dumb.
