  1. More info from the press conference on The ESRB Gets An 'F' · · Score: 1

If you have a bit too much time on your hands (as I did at 3am last night when this aired) you can check out
    the video from C-SPAN.

my 2 cents: I would really like to see the methodology of the "experiments" they conducted to determine good and bad retailers. Be curious to see what sort of sampling bias and bioethical considerations (human subjects, after all) went into that.

  2. The really incredible part: Brad Bird on Pixar's Next Movie: The Incredibles · · Score: 1
The reason I believe this will the greatest Pixar movie yet, and probably one of the best films of the year, is because it is written and directed by Brad Bird.

The last movie in which Brad Bird was involved, The Iron Giant, is my favorite animated movie of all time, and in the ohhh, top 5 of my "all time favorite movies". It is, quite simply, the closest thing to a perfect movie I have ever seen.

Seriously, people, you NEED to see The Iron Giant. Go rent it and join me in being incredibly, incredibly excited for the Incredibles.

  3. City of God on The Best and Worst Movies of 2003? · · Score: 1
[Even though City of God is technically a 2002 release, I don't think it made it to the U.S. (and the rest of the world?) until 2003]

City of God (Cidade de Deus) is the frantic tale of growing up poor, surrounded by violence in a Brazillian slum during the 70s. The visually stunning story jumps through time and between characters to weave a narrative that is provactive and thought-provoking. Be warned, it IS violent; not in the "Holy shit did you see her cut off all those people's limbs???" way, but in the "*sniff* I wish I was dead because the world is a cruel, miserable, place" way.

Anyway, enough of the movie reviewer crap, I wouldn't list the movie here unless I thought it was good. It's hard to be like, "DOODE, you have to see it!" since there are certain scenes in the movie that are just painful to watch they're so sad. But, you don't have to take my word:

  4. What about X-Com? on Vanishing Game Genres · · Score: 2

The original that is (UFO Defense, i believe). That game really did it's own thing. Combined a lot of elements from a bunch of different genres to come up with something new that was more than the sum of its parts. Highly addictive and scary as hell when you're playing it at 3am with all the lights out. I dunno if X-COM should count as its own individual genre, though. Same thing with The Sims. How does a game become a genre? If there's just one, it's "original" but once a bunch of rip-off games are made, it becomes the progenitor of it's own phylum?
