The USA does not, has not, and likely never will have the 'leadership' position in space exploration.

This is carefully managed propaganda by the US government. The term 'won the space race' was redefined in the US to mean 'first man on the moon'. Ignoring, other milestones like 'first satellite in orbit', 'first man in space', 'first probe on the moon' etc

Now they are stuck with having to hitch-hike rides with the Russian's to get to the ISS, and getting the Eurpoean's to launch their satellites.

It amuses me how much the US public has bought into this cold war propaganda.

...get over it. It's the same in any industry. If you work in hospitality, you could be a bellhop, a cleaner or a hotel manager. The guy who comes to fix your laptop probably thinks you're an arse too. (I tend to think that about anyone who spells Windows with a 'z'). Also you probably have an over inflated opinion of your job (most people do). For example, all the 'IT Architects' I work with just see 'Code Monkey' jobs as roles to be shipped off to India.

Has anyone else had someone try to sell them these? Happened to me at one of the major hifi chains in Australia. Extra $50 gets you an audio optical cable with gold plated contacts. Highly recommened by the sales guy.

"Why would I need those?" says I.

"The gold plating gives you a better contact therefore better sound" the sales guy says.

"But it's an optical connection" says I.

"Oh yeah. Probably the cheaper ones are just as good then" says he.

This is very wrong but a common misconception. You are confusing presence subscriptions with messaging. You need to subscribe to someones *presence* but anyone can send you a message. For example a website may send you a message to say that someone replied to your thread on slashdot. Slashdot.org doesn't really care if you are online or not.

...of course on the *client* you are welcome to discard any messages from people who have not subscribed to your presence, but that's not a part of the Jabber protocol.
