Ok, so, in video5.avi they install Samba through RPM. Seems nice enough...

First they describe Samba as a web server for Linux. Then, on a first install attempt, it shows a screen full of conflicts, so they just --force it.

Couldn't they find a friend who knew a thing or two about Linux to say "Uhh..."?

For Frank's sake, this isn't about buying the computer to actually use DOS, it's about a system to avoid having to pay for Windows. Would you be happier if that same machine came with XP and cost $100 more? If your intention is to install Linux, or any operating system besides the one they ship you, as soon as you crack it open, wouldn't you rather pay as little as possible for any preexisting operating system?

A sizable portion of the discussion on /. revolves around a bunch of us installing our own picky operating systems, having it just the way we want it. Now, for some reason, you're acting like that whole notion never existed.

Hey guys. I've just reinstalled the A Root with Lindows and thought I'd try putting a new kernel in. A buddy burned the 2.6 source tree to cd for me so that's what I'm using. Everything seems to be going ok, but I'm not used to setting up alsa and I can't get any sound. I've unmuted all the channels but I still can't hear anything, at least not my Sade cd. Oh, also, distccd keeps segfaulting on this box. I don't know why!! If you've got any thoughts on this let me know too. I've got a shelll script that restarts it every 5 minutes in the mean time.

    Thanks in Advance!

    From the post:

Version 3.5 of Services for Unix will be free.

Commonly, the phrase "will be" usually means something to the effect of "later", or "not now", or perhaps even "later then now". This lends to the idea that if you go do something now, you will be trying before "will be" has had the chance to become "has been" or "is".

You can download 3.5_beta for free. I'm guessing here, but I imagine that when 3.5 final is released is "WHEN IT WILL BE FREE". The "real deal" is still at version 3.0 which, as it's not 3.5, is not free. But if this is something that you actually were interested in and kept your eye on you would have noticed that when 3.0 was released Microsoft made it available for a limited time for only the cost of shipping. At least, that's how I got my copy.

Because it's aimed at being a real-world test.

While there are quite a few people running PPC Linux, 99.9% of the time G5 users will be using Mac OSX. Just like 99.9% of the time AMD users will be running some form of Windows. Each processor is directly related to a targeted operating system. In order to guage real-world usability you realy don't have much of a choice but to use the expected configuration for each side. As long as certain loose conditions are met, this is not only fair, but proper. Conditions being:
    • Each must target similar consumers. If your target audience is different the reasons for the comparison are purely academic.
    • The margin of difference in price cannot be to great. If there's a huge cost difference the comparison shifts away from pure performance and more towards price/performance.
    • Surrounding hardware must be similar. Since this proports to be a CPU comparison, results will be tainted if there is to much of a difference in memory or video card performance.

You could make the list longer, but you're more likely to start coming up with more reasons for exceptions to the rules. And the reviewer actually paid attention to the above as much as possible; each having the same amount of memory, and commenting where things were different so you would be aware. He even pulled his graphics benchmarks due to the difference in video hardware.

The last thing you would want to do is install a testing operating system on either that essentially nobody in a work environment will be using. While it might provide different results, they would be meaningless. If a "64bit distro of linux" did happen to pull the AMD way out front, it doesn't change the fact that your real work won't have improved. You'll have a nice party fact about how cool your computer could be, but you'll still be Photoshopping slower then the G5.

Beta was a better format, but oh well.. nobody uses it.

I've been using a Hauppauge WinTV PCI w/ FM for a few years now and have no complaints. It's got good sounding stereo sound and with a good enough antenna the FM reception is very good too. CPU utilization while watching TV depends on the app. With xawtv it's practically zero, with tvtime it sits around 10% (due to picture smoothing, etc..). That card is moving into a MythTV box at the moment.

The Hauppauge PVR250 is on my current shopping list. MythTV supports the 250s hardware mpeg encoding, so you can record without putting pressure on your CPU. I'm sure the same is true for it's own Windows application.

You might also look for a VGA converter for your PS/2. Lets you plug your PS/2 straight into your monitor. Pick up a KVM with it and you're set.
