Nope. Don't point your finger elsewhere. The real problem here is right here, and it is very easy to fix if someone have the will power.

It is called "Labor Unions". If someone have the will, determination and force to suspend the U.S. Constitution and made these organizations illegal, we can outgrow and overpower China very quickly.

And that is a problem in our university where a lot of graduate student works for IT stuff around the campus (so they earn a tuition waiver along with it). Many of them are international (esp. Indian) and extremely difficult to train. Most of those CS graduates does not know how to turn on a computer, despite their resume greatness. International students are also the laziest on the job (with the exception of people who are doing REAL research under a professor, which are rare in our place).

Domestic people seems to possess a larger variety of skills, may be because of their interest. Sadly, Not that many CS PhD students/candidates know how to setup an Active Directory forest anymore.

I have never met nor heard of a more dishonest group than Indians. They cheat in all of my classes and get away with it because most of us do not speak Hindi. My professors have caught a couple different groups of them copying each others work on several occasions. Homework and tests that is. Pair this with how often you hear lies and obfuscation of truth from their ruling class, and how often Indians come over with H-1B visas and steal American jobs. People from India just know how to copy and paste, fake resumes, and scratch their feet on their job. You will never see a single Indian work for their paycheck. All they want is to show up and get the check. Having class projects with Indians was the worst experience I ever had. I don't think all Indians are bad, girls actually work very hard, but for the guys, their actions are certainly shady. I think they probably are more honest and fair when amongst their own people but they show contempt for the rest of us.

The thing is universities need to push more training of using open source alternatives.

The fact still remains: You will find more people who have used MS office than people who use OpenOffice. More people in the pool = less wage required to hire if you are an employer. That is where "total cost of ownership" comes from.

For example, in our university, most LAMP sysadmins are full time staff which you have to pay at least $45 - 55K per annum, while most WISA (Windows, IIS, SQL Server, ASP.NET) sysadmins are students which cost much less (somewhere between $13 - $18 an hour + tuition waiver if you are grad student).
