  1. Crap! on The Celeron Casts Aside Its Crutches · · Score: 1

I thought one of the things that made the Celeron so nice was that you could almost always count on it to overclock from 66 mHZ to 100 mHZ without too much of a problem? Doesn't this sort of kill some of the overclocking potential that has made some of those celerons such an attractive buy? I guess now we've gotta up the heat and the risk to 133 mHZ.

I think our moderators apparently need a bit of mental adjustments if they list this post as "Insightful" ;) BTW, did anyone else notice that the whole cryostasis thing was stolen from the "Aliens" series? Shame shame... it's a wonder anyone sees Kubrick as if he was some sort of visionary. We all know he ripped off the whole vehicles-in-space thing from the Wing Commander movie.

Indeed, let us hope that the transistor count will help the P4s future processors to not suck as much as they have been lately, I sincerely hope that they won't lose their markey completely to AMD. Competition = good.

  4. Re:Is this really a bad thing? on Will Linux Save Microsoft? · · Score: 1

All true, but if MS were to make a Linux distro they'd probably only keep the bare minimum of their code open-sourced. There's no way they'd keep everything wide open just to prevent people from cashing in on their code or improving on it. They'd be competing with themselves.

Hmmmmm I don't think Slashdot misreported anything about 3DFX (except for maybe the cancellation of the 6000 thing). We've heard a lot of bits and pieces about what's going on with 3DFX lately, and I think the community is just drawing logical conclusions from them. Can you provide a link to a Slashdot article that reports something about the 3DFX situation that is blatantly wrong?

  7. Bugs on Linux Sin Demo · · Score: 1

When this bad boy came out for PC (I think it was about two years ago or so), it was a great game content-wise, but it was riddled with some pretty horrendous bugs. If it weren't for all of them, Sin probably would've been a much more well-known game in it's time. I wonder if they patched things up for the Linux version to give it a real second chance.

  8. Legal issues? on Acer Labs' (ALI) Plans Box To Play PS2 Games, DVD · · Score: 2

The concept sounds interesting, to me it sounds reminiscent of the X-Box. But this has Playstation support too. Can't Acer get sued over this? I read the article, but I didn't see if the article meant that you could POTENTIALLY play Playstation games on this DVD player natively or if you had to install third party software (Bleem!). I know Sony took Bleem! to court (they haven't won a case yet). Isn't Acer in danger of butting heads with The Big Boys at Sony? I wonder if we could see a "universal" console system that supported every console in the market that used the same kind of media, like CDs. Interesting.

  9. Then again... on Microsoft's First Ad Targeting Linux · · Score: 2

"Not bad for an operating system that Microsoft claims is nothing to worry about." Then again, CmdrTaco, we've seen plenty of anti-Microsoft ads coming from different Linux sources, but we don't sit here pointing at every one of them and saying "Since Linux is superior they shouldn't be worried about Microsoft." Let's try to be at least a little subjective.

  10. Re:Death on Computer Will Take On Formula 1 Champion · · Score: 1

Then again, I'm sure the computers can be (and will be) specifically programmed to not take any unnecesary risks, and are therefore incapable to doing some of the things the human driver might do, such as risking accelerating quickly through a turn to catch up with an opponent. The computer will probably always be playing it safe, I'm sure it's not going to be designed to take no prisoners. It all depends on how they program the driving computer, but since humans aren't bound by logic or constant variables, we probably have an edge on deciding whether or not to take a risk. One could say that you can't program balls into a program, generally speaking. ;)

  12. Intel's new policy? on Pentium 4 Requires New Case And Power Supply · · Score: 1

I can't help but think that these new Pentium 4s are only going to be more overclocked chips... we all saw what happened this week with the new Intel 1.2 gHZ chip. I thought the P4 line was supposed to be switched to a lower micron to reduce heat? Whatever happened to that idea? With all of this recent (bad) Intel news, it sounds more and more like AMD has a golden opportunity here...

... But you're forgetting that we haven't heard anything from Sega yet; we don't know if they support Bleem or not, just because Bleem for DC exists doesn't mean by any stretch of the imagination that Sega supports it. After all, Sony was pissed at Bleem... But to my knowledge, Sega hasn't said anything about this new software yet. If they have, can someone provide a link?

  15. Yessir... on Playstation Emulation On The Dreamcast · · Score: 2

Interesting things to consider... If the DC consumer has Bleem! then that takes away from sales of actual DC games, but if the resolution is doubled and the framerate also increases then hardcore Playstation gamers will have incentive to buy a Dreamcast (which with the Bleem software and Dreamcast hardware is essentially a Super-Playstation). With new customers buying Dreamcasts, there's more incentive for them to buy actual Dreamcast games. On the other hand, it's a well known fact that Sega doesn't really make any money off of the hardware, it's all about licensing the games. I wonder how Sega will react? We all know Sony's probably already thrilled ;)

  16. This is good... on Windows Source Code Proposal Confirmed · · Score: 1

If not simply because it seems to be a step in the right direction as far as Windows goes. I know a lot of you hardcore Linux users out there will probably trash Microsoft for making this move (even though they were under pressure to do it), I don't see how this can really be that much of a bad thing unless I'm missing something. So what can be negative about this announcment/confirmation?

  17. Worried / Excited on ATI Radeon 256 · · Score: 1

This board does have some very promising features, however I'm afraid that ATI will let this board slip through release dates, which was the death of the Rage Fury board. Hopefully that won't happen. ATI is also rather infamous for their rather crappy drivers. If they can pull it off, more power to them. I must say I'm very unimpressed with the V5, it seems to only be an incremental step up from the GeForce (in fact, the GeForce is faster at lower resolutions). 3DFX in general seems to be going down the tubes, the Geforce2 GTS is already around the corner and it will almost certainly out-perform 3DFX's offering. I'm glad to see that ATI has also given us a serious board (at least on paper) to raise our eyebrows at. The more competition the better, it only gives us, the consumers, positive output. Thanks for reading!

  18. Surprise surprise on Updated: Phantom Menace DVD Release · · Score: 2

As it was said before, it was pretty obvious this wouldn't happen, Lucas has stated plenty of times that he wouldn't release Star Wars on DVD because it was an untested medium (yeah right, DVD is a household word now). Besides that, it would've been all over www.starwars.com as some huge announcment to get some attention before it was leaked out. Oh well, we can all wait. It's just too bad I can't watch Episode 1 on DVD because it was such an outstanding achievment in the history of movies (end sarcasm).
