If the government really does intend to outlaw encryption, the point isn't going to be to stop people from using it. Rather it will be used as an incentive to obtain search warrents, do keystroke-logging wiretaps and probably just add more jailtime to criminals. While I doubt that mesures such as this would cause the govenrment to start cracking down on Joe Encryption-User, it would definatly hinder the development of future encryption technologies.

Yet another advantage to running *nix ;)

Seriously, I think that Outlook and Netscape (and perhaps newer versions of Eudora) include funcitonality to filter messages not specifically sent to the recipient. If this is a problem, one should be able to just contact thier ISP and ask them to setup a .procmailrc filter. At the ISP I work at, we have set up a simple web-based filter to allow the customer to do this.

  14. Re:"ADV: " should be mandatory!!! on Counting The Cost Of Spam · · Score: 1
Its already is unbelievalby easy to filter out spam. As most spam contains a forged To: header in the message, simply add a line like this to your .procmailrc:

    :0 * !^To:.your@e-mail.address.com
    /dev/null

Hooray. No more spam. I hate spam as much as the next guy, but I really think that it is just the result of a larger issue with misconfigured mail servers and generally stupid users. If you don't want spam, simply don't leave your e-mail address laying around on alt.sex.midget, and take a few preventative measures.

  16. Re:UPS vs. USPS on Pushing The Postal Envelope · · Score: 1

My dad used to work for UPS, for a total of 10 days. Things may have changed since, but he says that basically your foreman yelled at you to 'go faster, damnit' pretty much through the whole 8 hour shift. If you didn't pack fast enough, you got fired. He finally got sick of it and simply walked off of the job, leaving the foreman, whose face was red with high blood pressure, and voice was horse from constantly screaming, to do the rest of his loading work. My father was all of 18 years old at the time, with a newborn baby (me) and a wife to support, in a recession economy and he STILL walked off the job. If they still treat thier workers like that, its no wonder that your packages arrive mangled and beaten.
