  1. Fire Jobs Again, Please on Apple Bans Android Magazine App From App Store · · Score: 1

If I could afford it, I'd buy a significant share of Apple and suggest that it's time we fire Mr. Jobs again. Just another time-out. The company is going to suffer from his megalomania, and this is coming from someone who owns (or owned, anyway, before certain things started really pissing me off) a version of every product they've produced in the last three years. Someone better start speaking up before he kills his own dreams again.

  2. Okay. on The Apple Paradox, Closed Culture & Free-Thinking Fans · · Score: 3, Interesting

This is the most boring argument on the internet. But I will say that I switched to Mac because I could afford it and because I was tired of the same-old with Windows. I paid about $300 more for this Mac than I paid for my last PC, which was about a thousand bucks. I bought the basement Macbook. It wasn't until I bought my first iPod in 2008 that I even considered buying a Mac. I first got an old iBook and tried it out, just to get a feel for the system. Then in March 2009 I finally bought this Macbook, and I have no intention of going back. There are very few times I've been anywhere near as frustrated with this system as I used to be on Windows. I also think the prevalence of people who pirate Windows is very telling: you love it so much but you're not willing to pay for it. It's like stealing a car with three wheels. I get all my work done faster and more efficiently on my Mac. I'm less distracted by viruses and other things that used to suck up an exorbitant amount of time in my computing. Since I've switched, three of my friends have switched when it came time to buy new computers. They of course gave mine a try first. The truth is that most people aren't wanting to play games and do all this other bullshit that Windows users are talking about. The other truth is that the crazy Mac users you're talking about, the ones who think they're better than everyone else, they are more easily identifiable by their @me.com or @mac.com e-mail addresses. That shows true, baseless loyalty. I can think of two times I got angry at Apple. One of them was unrelated to my experience, the other was directly related. In both cases I made my resolutions. I own more Apple products now than anyone I know. And I see no reason to switch back to the wide and virus-infested world of PC computing. I also have a Linux netbook and an IBM thinkpad, both running Ubuntu. I use those for specific purposes. This Mac is my general purpose computer, and pound for pound I spent a lot less on it--I won't upgrade for another three years, you'll surely be upgrading next year. Shit, the iBook would have suited me just fine had it about 200Mhz more. And that's the truth, and that's all I have. Fuck Bill Gates and Steve Jobs. I make my decisions based on my needs, not my image, and people who criticize me for using a better computer well, fuck you too.

Hey man--I recently bought girlswithinsurance.com back from an insurance guy. He had no real use of the domain, I'm sure he'd bought it on an impulse via linky offered by his registrar. I offered him a fair price (more than $200) and he immediately accepted it, leading me to believe that he would have taken a much lower amount. Nonetheless I made good on the offer. I had him request the money from me via paypal that way if any litigation ever needed to be pursued, it would be evident to the court that he had asked for the money for a specific reason, and he couldn't argue that I was just randomly sending him money or anything. Anyway, the end result was that he was very good about it and there were no issues once the money had been transferred--at least none that were within his control. GoDaddy has ailing software but that is another issue. Anyway, hope this info helps--the basic thing is to keep records of all communications and transactions and possibly initiate phone conversation via skype and record it. All of this is slightly unnecessary things to do in order to keep yourself from getting screwed over.

Some of the greatest innovations in US History took place during the Great Depression or right after, especially in social programs, etc. People needed more affordable ways to do things, and industry delivered. From preservatives to food stamps. I think this guy is definitely not looking at it from an end user perspective. I think projects like Ubuntu, OpenOffice, and Firefox are going to see an astronomical rise in support over the next three years. Why? Well, if people are aware that instead of buying a brand new computer they can buy a slightly older one and boot Ubuntu but still be current on all the things they care about, they're going to do that, especially when they find out that all their software updates are going to be free and more and more types of software are being supported. Business, hard up for investment capital, are going to turn away from Mac and M$ and start thinking, "Well, if we cut our tech spending by this much, we can afford this much more in salaries, and increase this much more in profits over the next quarter..." People who program for money now are going to start losing their jobs anyway, and since it's probably something they love to do, there's only two routes for them to go: join the OS revolution, or start their own projects, destined for failure. Innovation is going to soar. I'm not buying it. I think a lot more people will come into my line of work, I mean join the military, as the ability to find a steady paycheck decreases. And if they happen to be techies, then they will represent a steady income for the tech. industry. Not just military, but government jobs generally. And so on. This guy's an idiot. Listen to someone who knows something about open source, that Red Hat CEO guy. Not that I like Red Hat (who does?), but at least he's been around the community a little bit to know these kinds of things...
