Question: How long do you think that Microsoft REALLY knew about this back door?

Question:How many systems have they accessed or could they have had acess to because of this?

While I agree that noone may have looked at all the source, I think it is a little more difficult for things like this to happen with open source.

As far as kernel patches go I think Linus does look at the patches as well they are usually reviewed by other developers and it is not a matter of here take my word. Besides you don't usually put usernames and passwords in the kernel you put them in other software.

I tried Opera and found that it did not handle plugins that well. I find konq to handle the plugins a little better. I still use Netscape 4 to visit Cnet and watch cnet tv, as mozzilla .8 didn't work at that site and neither did opera, or konq.

I think that when mozilla reaches its 1.0 release it may be worth a second look at, but if they just rewrote the image rendering again, then doesn't it beg the question of how many bugs that introduced?

I then look at the system requirements of mozilla and have to say that you are better off with opera, netscape 4.x even. konq is good, and would do fine with those requirements, but it is a little bit of a beast itself too.

Oh and watch out when converting profiles from netscape to mozilla. When .8 did the conversion on mine it too the .netscape directory and grew it emensly, from 7Meg to almost 100 Meg. Why I don't know, but it did. Not sure if this is a bug or what, but I suspect that they are storing the data differently. Besides, why do I have to create a profile for a browser? yes there should be preferences, but not a profile when you start it up. That is really obnoxious. Maybe a prompt "would you like to create a profile" rather than forcing me to create a default profile.

It would be so nice if you could just install just the browser, with NO references to anything else, no composer, no mail, just the browser, AND then configure the browser to use an external mail app, unlike netscape 4.

I have worked for multiple software companies and they have standards of what makes a 'show stopper' and what is not and what can go into a release.

Show stoppers are usually bugs that crash the software when doing normal functions. Like if you open up a file and the software crashes, that would be a show stopper. In some cases it depends on your clients as well. If the client finds a bug they may deem it as necessary to be fixed. Most companies I have worked at usually work closely with clients. In many cases the software does not get FULLY tested till the client actually gets the software. Then when (not if they will find bugs) they tell us an dthen we make it a priority to fix them and send out patches to certain clients if not all. This would depend on the client contract.

"Low priority" bugs would be ones that do not impead functionality, but are more of annoyances. Take for instance I saw one bug that when you scroll the scrollbar the window would flicker. This is annoying, but does not prevent the user from using the software. Other less important bugs are bugs that are on reports. If a report does not show the correct data and you can get the data from the database or it is a known bug this can also be a low priority bug. The question usually is "Can the client work with the application with this bug or will it cause the client major problems or loss of money?" Take for instance the reports bug, a client could just not use the reports and create their own from sql.

Something you must remember is that some of the programs that I have worked on have been written by many programmers. They are thousands of files andhave client, server, and database code, in multiple languages. Some of these bugs could be caused by some of the software that we use. Bugs in windows API's, bugs in Sybase, or Oracle, bugs in the server OS, or even 'quirks' that many programmers do not know about.

Next, many times programmers get put in a job where they know the language but NOT the API and the API is not well documented, especially if this is a 'custom' system where the software company has developed programs for DB access on top of the 'db lib'. What about programmers that leave the company or get fired?

So who do you blame? The programmer that impemented something that he did not know the company API, the software company for not completely testing "EVERY" single case that could possibly come up?

You never know how a user will use software or what they may do or have installed on their system that could affect how your software will work.

I started my own comparison of various programming languages at my own personal web site. I go over perl, php, asp/VB (some), java, javascript, C and C++. I compare a few different things. Mainly I discuss the basic similarities / differences of these languages like the for loops, while loops, if statements, functions, types, and then I get into how each has its own definition of an 'object'. Yes C sort of has objects they are structure. Not a 'real' object like C++ or Java but it is similar.

The point is that anyone can learn any language once they have learned one language. The big differences in the languages are the 1) syntax, 2) garbage clean up (or lack of) and 3) the ease of programming. Lets face it pointers are not easy and objects can be difficult as well.

Personally I think what language you pick should be more dependant on what you feel comfortable with. JSP has the drawback that it is not part of apache, so if you are running apache each JSP page needs to have a call made to tomcat (or whatever you use) which means you have to have a socket call outside of apache. Perl / CGI meanse you have a new process forked for each page (why the hell did he not say mod_perl instead). Neither php nor perl have string 'types' but you can 'force' types if need be.

In case you want to see my review go here -> http://www.mindspring.com/~joeja/programming_myth. html .
