The main reason I went to Redhat is that almost every software package out there is made for Redhat, and Redhat compatable. I have said this a number of times.
I still wonder why Corel WP is using debain for there distro thing. This may be the straw that splits the GNU/Linux & Linux Penguin. Will Corel support hte.deb package format or will they also have rpms?
Will there is Redhat Linux & there is GNU/Linux.
really I saw a GPL liscense there at linuxhq

Currently I have 7 window managers on my system.
I have enlightenment with GNOME.
I now have windowmaker with GNOMEpanel-applet
I have AfterStep
I have XFCE
I have fvwm2
I have fvwm95
I have KDE
I cannot understand why there are so many different projects in this area. WindowMaker and AfterStep are very similar, it woud be nice to see these two project merge at some point.
E sounds as though it is going to drop GNOME, but WindowMaker has some GNOME compatability in it so maybe it will be the next GNOME window manager.
and there is ICE and BlackBow, and Bowman, and UDE. I like a chooice, but this is rediculious. Linux has at least 10 different window manager. Gee if they start to all be included in distros I'll have to rewrite my windowchoose script that I execute at logon. I now have a window manager for each day of the week:-).
Does anyone else out there feel that it wou dbe a good idea if some of these window manager projects and desktop projects were to merge into 1 ultra configurable window manager, and 1 ultra configurable desktop?
is it time to buy into the company? If either goes public they will have to answer to stock holders. M$ could get there paws deep into Linux.
as far as them mentioning KDE and GNOME, both are good, but they both have there bugs. KDE apps don't always work well with none kde apps. GNOME can let a user really screw up the UI if they don't know what they are doing.
It woud lbe nice to see some of these open source projects unite, and form 1 window manager that is ultra lit, and 1 desktop that was super configurable.
yes kde is very configurable, it should make it easier for someone to set up app to launch thru kfm, a nice GUI setup tool. I'd write one but I don't know qt or kde progammin and don't have the time to learn.
GNOME has some nice features, but without a 3 button mouse or 3 button emulation E wont pop me up a menu. I have also been prone to loose the gnome_task bar thingy.
I use afterstep mostly. It is fairly easy to create themes. It is faily light in footprint.
now off topic.....
It would be nice to see e, blackbox, wm, and kwm, and some of these other window manager efforts all start to merge. In to one window manager that was not only light, but supported one method of creating themes, and configuring. We have many different methods here, but all seem to be leading to a common path. A directory that contains the themes, and then a.something in the users home dir. No not like win95, but more compatable.
It would also be neat to see the deskktops merge into one GTK/QT compatable desktop.
hey I amentitled to my opinion you don't have to like it. It would just make it easier if there was one standard. I could write an app and it coudl be used by those who like ht e'kde' look and those who like the other looks.
This morning on my way into work, while stuck in traffic here in DC, I was thinking of DSL. I heard the Bell Atlantic Commercials. I wondered about how difficult it is, and what was involved, and how expensive it is also.
After reading this, I am not sure that I want to do it at this time. I don't spend that much time on the internet.
I also noticed his remarks about 56k modems. I guess 3 com will use info like that in there defense of 56 k access and X-2 technology.
Hey I spend about $0 on my 33.6 an dthen upgraded it for another $50. I am ocntent with my 56k access. I have had transfers from 300 to 70k with my 56k modem.
Has anyone here used the gnome-linuxconf? It is really good. linuxconf works with all distros. I do not think that gnome will just go away. It does need some work, in terms of configurability, and themes, and needs a new window manager. I think RH would be wise to add gnome to there Anotherlevel.
about E......I would have never tried E unless it as in a distro. Is it in any other distros?
in order to 'woo' windows users from windows, they must make them feel at home.
I use linux cause it is stable. So far RH 6.0 has been pretty stable for me. X has crashed a few times, but I imaginge that would happen with any distro, depending on what you have X doing.
why do people here always see things as being only "ONE WAY". Its either KDE or GNOME. Both have good things that have come from them. GNOME Help is pretty good, and it allows easy access to the man pages. GNOME term is better imho than kterm. However kfm is better than gnomes filemanager (IMHO).
I use them both and parts of each. They fit nicely with Afterstep.
I just hope that none of this splinters Linux. If linux splinters, there will be no chance for it to ever evolve into a mainstream desktop.
Personally I think that kde and gnome should have just improved an existing desktop/windowmanager, like AfterStep, adding programs to an already existing window manager.
My modem tells me I connect at 115k, but it is a 56k modem.. I have run some progs (iptraf), and it turns out taht I have had downloads from 2k to 75k. Sounds to me like they neeed new to get a new ISP, not su 3COM.
Do they have a port to Linux? Is he using there code? What exactally have they patented? They may not have a 'real' case, they are just going after someone as an example. This needs more investigating.
Isn't that near impossible? It means creating a lot of work. I know that if I was an ISP down there I'd consider shuting down.
Is there really any way to control ALL of the content that passes thru a web server? In doing this don't you infringe on basic human rights of privacy issues? (I'm in the US not sure about other countries.)
Does anyone else see this as a potential problem? Obviously there will have to be software written to do this. People to monitor this. Many other potential issues. This is ludicris!
I think that it would be a good idea if they wrote a version of internet explorer for Linux. But would anyone use it? I am not sure that they are afraid of Linux to that degree, but with IE and MS Office on Linux M$ would still have its "hold" in the market even if companies did switch OS's. It would or should not be to difficult to port IE from Solaris to Linux.
I know that with UNIX there are also license issues. NT has those too. We use Microfocus COBOL, and they have per user license, but then again so does M$. M$ has per machine license, ie you need a license per each machine. Where UNIX is is usually per named user or per number of concurrant users.
going to UNIX could save you if you have users that do not always use the same machine all the time, or users that login from home.
going to Linux could save you as it would run most if not all of your NT hardware, and one copy could be installed on EVERY machine with only one liscense.
The biggest problem is your NT admins. How willing they are to learn Linux after getting there MSCE (assuming they are MSCE). Most may leave the company I'd imagine, especially if they paid for there MSCE themselves.
if Your NT admins can 'truly" trouble shoot a network then learnign Linux / UNIX would not be that difficult as long as they are willing to think "outside the box".
If the damm game makers would port to Linux they woudl not have this problem, and they would make more money. Emulation is reverse engineering. I don't theink that they can say that ALL ROMS on the internet are illegal. If I created one on my machine, and posted it on the internet it would be legal. It looks like a deterrant method to stop the NES emulatin project. They fear that it may get ported to another platform. I think that they would have a tough case, unless the emulaion progream uses patented / copywrighted or a trademark .
gee wizz.. I am behind.. I am still using 2.0.36.. where is my RH6.0 cdrom and I hope it doesn't have to many bugs... I'll have lots of patches to apply, and kernels to build.. good thing is that it is only 6 minutes a build on my machine...
Are you interested in a text editor or WYSIWYG editor?
As far as WYSIWYG I use Communicator 4.x it is not the best, but it wil alow you to easily throw up a page or two prety easily, and you do not have to learn vi or emacs to use it, or alot of difficult html. There are a few draw back with it as it does add funny stuff in the html, sometimes. It is as easy to use a a word processor thou> I showed a friend how to use it and he set up a web site for his church with it, and it looks pretty good, with tables and all.
as for text editors, if you are using *nix, I'd recommend nedit under X windows. It does syntax highlightnening of Java/Javascript and HTML, among other languages, and also allows you to add your own macros, and define new things to highlight, and change the colors. Best of all it is free and has a GUI.

the nicest thing about linux is that anytime anyone criticizes Linux the Linux communtiy retaliates by improving the system or showing that they are wrong. It is nice to see a major playor stating that Linux will have a place in the future, and also to point out some of the strengths of Linux. This shows that Linux keeps improving. We can only get better when we know where our weakness are!
it looks like some other company other than Redhat is starting to give back to the linux community. Redhat has give us gnome and rpm, now TL is giving us improved clustering.
