Clam is great. I've been using it for a year or so now and it's caused the least issues of anything.

I also run A Squared as a trojan scanner, but it proudly proclaimed a file to be trojan free recently, and when I ran it proceeded to wreck my computer leading to having to use bloody system restore.

Now in Debian, no. People using that are automatically more knowledgeable and know the potential risks. Plus OSS has it's house in far more order than Microsoft ever will.

And your friends without a clue, did they turn to you for assistance? Because if so, that sort of proves my point. It's not so much this stuff being turned on by default, as in people not knowing about it or how to use it.

Having all this stuff turned on out of the box is like having all your doors open. There's no guarantee anything bad will happen, but it will certainly increase the chances.

If anyone (who isn't the original poster as an AC) can confirm they know people "without a clue" who use Windows file sharing, please enlighten me, as I have never known ANYBODY who has used it outside of a corporate environment.

But even if people do, it's irrelevant really, as the MAJORITY of users are just one computer sitting on an internet connection, and no amount of random "parents and friends without a clue" blithering is going to change that.

First thing I do on a new XP install is shutdown stuff like this. Yes, it would be convenient to have it on my network, but you never know when some giant glaring exploit is going to appear and leave you open to pwnage due to Microsoft drinking a cold frosty can of fail.

Days like this justify my paranoia.

And you Microsoft muppets should really start shipping your sorry excuse of an OS with all this crap turned OFF by default since 90% of users wouldn't need it anyway.

A friend and I were discussing this the other day. He is horrified by how many people he knows that watch reality shows, X Factor, Pop Idol etc... He asked if I did. He was greatly relieved when I said I didn't.

I think part of the problem is less and less people have the time to watch anything truly engaging, intelligent or demanding, which is why HBO's "The Wire", despite being one of the greatest television shows ever made, had such poor ratings. (That, and probably a fair degree of casual racism because of it's primarily African American cast.)

Reality shows. Bullshit news reporting. Reruns... The money is being spent elsewhere and really, for what I paid I can pick up a couple of DVD's, and spend more time watching them then I spent watching TV when I had it.

Screensavers going down was a fucking tragedy. I remember when they first broadcast in Canada, I saw the very first episode they aired here and thought "Finally! A TV show for ME!"

You knew things were turning to shit when they cut the shows length to 60 minutes (because 90 minute shows don't work was the argument) and started having celebrity interviews. Writing was clearly on the wall from then on.

I still miss TSS. These days the only tech show I watch regularly is Tekzilla, which I like, but I find it endlessly frustrating as the show is too short, and too focused on questions. I like it when they get someone on with new games, or did their recent uber gaming PC etc... Basically when the show is more "The Screensavers" and less "Call For Help".

And since it's kind of related, if you're a gamer, I recommend Sessler's Soapbox as a great podcast. Adam Sessler, if you read this, you sir, ROCK!

Only other remotely tech related podcasts/shows I watch regularly are Geekbrief and Webbalert. And then I tend to have interesting fantasies about what would happen if you put those two in a romantically lit room with some alcohol and baby lotion...

I have routinely skipped games over the years due to Starforce, and now Securom is making me make those same choices. I did genuinely feel bad buying Spore as it went against my usual decision, and was a very large exception.

Without getting into the absolute nonsense of industry piracy figures (I mean I'd be counted in the figures for pirating Spore, except I bought it as well. I just wanted the crack to avoid the DRM.) Piracy currently offers a more attractive product. I've read LOADS of people having problems with Spore when used from the legit copy. Not ONE problem with the cracked version.

Sure, I can understand developers wanting to protect their titles, but it has to be transparent, and it seems with each passing phase of software protection, more and more people are being screwed out of playing the game they've bought due to the DRM. And of course the pathetic irony is you can't return the game, "because you may have pirated it".

I started using cracks regularly when Neverwinter Nights wouldn't load for after a certain patch. (1.27 I think. Maybe 1.29.) That was where I basically said "Enough" and have cracked every piece of software I've bought since. (Except in the case of Stardock and the like who don't use DRM.)

It really is at the point though where I'm about done with the PC gaming industry. And I have no interest in the consoles, so mainstream PC gaming is pretty much "game over" for me now. Endless lack of imagination, endless expansion packs, endless DRM... It's just not worth it anymore.
