This seems to be the equivilent of banning cell phone use or note passing in class. Neither censorship nor an invasion of privacy.
Instructors should have the right to demand certain disruptive behaviors be banned. This is just another step in making net access more like other communication mediums in the US.
Kinda off topic, but if you want a view of real merging of net communication and normal life, check out the anime "Lain". The pervasiveness of net access in the series is really cool and slightly distrubing.
This sort of thing ("borrowing" of code without following the rules) happens all the time. The good news is, with Open Source it is easier to find and correct.
I just hope the offender can be identified and given the chance to ask forgiveness (sinner repent!;)).
This is unlikely to drive consumer pricing down. If anything, as competetion is elmininated, the national giants will raise prices in less competetive markets.
$60/month land line bill, meet $90/month cell phone bill, formerly known as $40/month cell phone bill.:)
My wife made me give up caffine once. Two weeks and I didn't notice a thing. No headaches, dizzyness, cravings, etc. Just got annoyed because avoiding caffine is like dodging taxes. You can do it for a little while, but eventually you slip.
Don't forget about areas of the US where there is only one Country & Western station, but it only really plays Country. Rock fans aren't the only ones that get pissy when they don't have choices. I'm not sure how much I'd be willing to pay, but the reception better be good and constant. That's one of the main reasons I have cable (the other being The Daily Show).
It is nice to see that things were changed. It gives me hope that one day most software won't be sold "AS-IS" and that maybe the people upstairs (CEOs not the big guy) are actually listening.
Ok, this is a rant and it is a bit personal, but I'm getting sick of all the i586 and i686 packages(especially those) floating around. Now I can forgive Mandrake since that's part of its bag. But why other binary distributions (like mozilla)?
I own lots of Pentia class machines, but I also have some really cool 486 machines that I'd like to use. Yes, I could get the source and recompile everything, but this is my rant and I'm going to enjoy it for a minute.
You've got to make a lot of assumptions. For one thing, you've got to assume the wavelength of radiation you're beaming couldn't possibly cause harm. Otherwise you could be mistaken as hostile.
Assumptions have to and will be made. You just try and make them as basic as possible.

Linguists have had much more success. Really, this is a problem for people that study communication theory and linguistics, not software developers and system administrators. Having majored in anthropology I can honestly say that is one of the things the degree is actually good for.
A business that brings in $X in year 1 and $X in year 2 is generally considered to have lost revenue. Not just my thinking, check the financial papers.
As for inflation only effecting housing, energy, and food, you've already pointed out an increase in CD costs. That would seem to imply certain consumer goods went up too. Oh, and salary's were up in '98 and '99 so you can guess what happened in '00. That's inflation and it'll affect the bottom line.
..and then there are the marketing droids to upkeep (jawas don't work for free ya know).
Oh, sound engineers too, they like money. Gotta pay them. Seems like there a bunch of people in the recording process that need money. Who else? Suppose the Teamsters need to get paid to drive those trucks from manufacturing to the stores.
Do you think the stores collect a portion of that revenue? Maybe a little off the top, say 5-10%?
My mother for one. I don't have one in my car (that's got to count for something). Mind you, I haven't bought one since PM Dawn had a song in the top 20, but I'm just pointing out that some people still need those little buggers.
Of course, you also have to take inflation into account. If you don't grow by that rate then it is effectively a loss. Also, we're talking revenue, not profits. I don't care if they take in $100,000,000 US, if the costs are sufficiently high the revenue is moot.
The reference to not having chosen a location for a start-up was a little joke/reality check. The author admitted that he didn't know about that sort of thing since he hadn't done it.
The various Pete's around town (last time I was there I counted four) are an exception rather than the rule. Just staying in southeast Michigan, how many other arcades are there really? One, maybe two in Ypsi. Then there's the vast wasteland which is Oakland county. I swear some places put in a laser tag game, three video games, and one of those cheesy claw games and call themselves an arcade.
Thankfully, there will always be exceptions to the rule, but for now the local arcade as an instituion is dead. As a pickup spot, it may have been still born.
Look at the G4 cube, aside from being cute, it is also very small (and quiet). Sony and HP also have slim-top PC's
I'm sure that most people who only have 1-3 computers have no problem with tower cases, but for those of us that have 5+ boxes and only one spare bedroom to shove them into, these are exactly what we're looking for.
For some of us (ok, maybe just me) the smaller the better. Right now I use old laptops as my servers to cut down on noise and space. I would like to buy a "slim-pc" like the ones made by Sony or HP, but the cost is pretty high and they're still bulkier than this little puppy.
Oh, and just to note, current laptops are too big for my tastes since I commute on a motorcycle and its a pain to try and safely wedge a Dell Latitude into my tail bag.
Tin Drum comes to mind. Yes, the US tends to be queasy about sexually explicit material yet at ease with violence. That's really a red herring, though, isn't it?
The question is simple "Is simulated child pornography closer to real child pornography or free speech?" Does it matter if the viewer can distinguish the difference? What if the author lies and says it is real? Is there a difference between digitally removing the clothing off a minor, drawing things from scratch, or altering a picture to make the subjects appear younger? These aren't easy questions and I look forward to reading the briefs.
The phone is still too heavy to carry comfortably in my shirt pocket and too bulky to wear strapped to my wrist. Yes, these things get to me. I also want a laptop that weighs less than 2lbs with battery and is about as thick as a notepad.

If I didn't, I would be a hypocrite. Let ye who has never "borrowed" cast the first stone.
(sound of an avalanche as the author is stoned to death)

Locally (suburban Detroit) we have choice in both cable service and land line telephone. Only two choices a piece, but choices nonetheless.
For the land line it costs ~$45/month just to have the phone. That may be largely local taxes and fees, but I doubt it.
This is unlikely to drive consumer pricing down. If anything, as competetion is elmininated, the national giants will raise prices in less competetive markets.

When they own four out of the five stations you can pick up in your area, it becomes a bit harder to just turn the dial.

I like my low user id. I just keep wondering who numbers 1-13 are.

That and talking up girls at the bar.

I wish I could get excited over a new game on Linux, but that's why I have an N64. For the rare PC game that is worthwhile, I have a Windows box.
Do many people actually use a Linux box as their sole gaming platform? Am I a freak for using my Linux boxes as servers and development platforms?
The reference to not having chosen a location for a start-up was a little joke/reality check. The author admitted that he didn't know about that sort of thing since he hadn't done it.
Now settle down and go have some Sugar Smacks.

That's not a car! That's a go-cart with body panels. Yuck!
