    Mozilla is triple-licensed, among them is a BSD-like license.
    MariaDB is GPL-licensed because of the MySQL business model, that has apparently failed.

    The only real GPL projects are Linux, glibc, and other GNU-related things.

    So essentially Google want people to give some of their time for free in addition of taking ownership of the work they'd be doing?
    I doubt volunteers want to give the IP of their work to Google so that they can monetize it.

    According to current trends, BSD has clearly won the "war", if there ever was one.
    Only a few flagship projects use the GPL.

    Many Google engineers contribute to open-source software, but they do so on their free time.
    This gives a false impression that Google actually contributes to open-source.

    There is an XMPP interface to Facebook chat which works pretty well. Works even better than GMail on some aspects.

    As far as I understand it, XMPP doesn't allow direct client-to-client communication, you have to go through one or several third-party servers, which will get the content of your messages even if you use encryption.
    It would have certainly been better to build this as an extension to file-transfer or audio/video chat rather than making a new protocol however. (I don't know XMPP that much, but I suppose those three things are direct client-to-client for efficiency reasons)

    But if you factor in the costs of having someone work on the project (someone that would normally have to be paid, and for engineering work paid pretty well), then it's definitely not cheaper.

    Because a high-resolution high-framerate camera is more expensive than a complex mechanical stabilization device -- oh wait, it isn't.

    Next, and standing all by itself, there's *nothing* wrong with marketing one's natural advantages.

    There is nothing wrong either with using one's natural advantages to make money with activities such as porn or prostitution.
    Yet if you ask people around what they think of prostitution, they'll think it's disgusting and that those women are whores.
