I've noticed that scifi shows these days tends to come in two categories: those that make fun of themselves to be funny and those that try to be realistic by being dark and miserable. Will Space Command conform to these recent trends? Or will we finally see a return to a plot that doesn't toy with the viewers emotions?
In the end, you cannot convince people who do not want to challenge their presuppositions and assertions. What will happen in the future, is that we will continue to move on and embrace exciting new advances, technologies, medicines that stem from biology, while those who do not understand it will simply be left behind.
I like your post. Your last point is near to what I wanted to say.
I think the argument pitting evolution entirely against creationism is a mistake. Some people who are brought up believing something would rather be wrong than admit they were wrong. If evolution guys really want to help the creationists instead of "beat them", then they should do it gently. Find a middle ground. Start by proposing something that doesn't immediately insult them, something that doesn't challenge their pride.
From the summary: "There's no explanation for this change going back 500 million years in any book I've read from the lips of any God." Nnnoooooo!!! WTF, guy?! I hope your target audience was the people who already agree with you, because they're the only ones still listening!
Let's rewrite this a bit: "Perhaps the story of creation from the Bible was meant to be a metaphor, like many of the stories told by Jesus. Maybe Adam and Eve weren't people, but some other form of life that would eventually grow into mankind. Evolution and Creationism don't have to be exclusive. Is there really harm in considering the story from a new point of view?" Granted, that would still tick a lot of people off, probably on both sides of the argument. But at least it would open a few to new ideas.
This is educational. It's meant to show the rest of us how long we can expect to stay married if we become rich. We're supposed to set our "succubus peril" models to start running today.
(Granted, she might actually like him for not his money. Maybe he checked her facebook history first to make sure she didn't seem greedy.)
If you follow the links, you eventually get an opportunity to pre-order a digital copy of Wasteland 2 for $20, DRM-free. That makes me think he's just using this Origin news for free press. I hope that's what he's doing. The idea that he's taking advantage of EA makes my heart warm and extra thumpy.
You cannot sue for something that has not yet happened. Period.
One of the major arguments against EPA regulations is that people should be able to sue for damages privately. Either you can sue or there are strong regulations, you can't have both. Well, you can for a while until the people rise up against you, I guess.
But I guess that's what you give us the fluoride for.
Am I the only one who was very much distracted seeing the constant screen transitions in the video? I could hardly focus on what was being said because I was trying to figure out what the finger was doing. -grumbles-
Alright. I read about the hotmail security breach the other day and now this. I had my own account accessed twice before, but I thought it was just due to a weak password on my part each time. Now I'm thinking it wasn't just me. I want to switch now.
So for people in the know on email accounts, I have two questions: 1) What is the best choice of service for a lazy person? (Gmail? Seems like that one should be a target itself just from popularity.)
2) What sorts of obstacles will I face when switching? I have my current hotmail addy associated with every service I subscribe to, and I don't think I can change it with many of them. Am I supposed to empty out all the messages and contacts in it, then have it transfer all messages immediately to my new account?
They have a few new ones like Witcher 2. I tried to look up some numbers on this, but it looks like it might be the most pirated game so far: 1M legitimate sales to 4.5M downloads. It'll probably be downloaded even more now that they remastered it. Hrmmmm so maybe the DRM is doing the job afterall. I *hate* finding evidence to the contrary of something I just said.:( -bows head in shame-
Just wanted to give a nod to GOG.com and point them out as an example. They sell games that are only DRM-free, and they seem to be doing just fine. I've been one of their customers since they started a few years ago, and I've only seen them grow. I haven't heard anything about their games being stolen and redistributed. I see no reason why it'd be different for (reasonably priced) ebooks.
Hmmm. I agree with your points 1, 5, and 6. I think the others could work out fine though.
Animals getting whacked by turbines doesn't concern me. The same people who worry about it are the same people who love evolution, so they should also believe that new generations of critters should develop an instinct to avoid the them, right?
I've not heard much about solar having ecological side effects. They have fumes if you light them on fire, but that's about it. In every other respect they seem to beat the competition. If you take mining for coal into account, then they're about even in terms of land required for energy output.
And geothermal.... I want to stick fracking for natural gas in there too. That seems like a very bad idea.
"Interesting" for the same old knuckle-headed response that any resident of mount stupid gives whenever the phrase "dark matter" is mentioned?
The knuckle-headed response is to wish for a more complete theory of the fundamental rules of the universe that would be the greatest thing to affect astrophysics since relativity? Dang. I'm terribly curious what the intelligent response would be! Please enlighten us, good sir!
I didn't mean to imply that it wasn't possible because we couldn't see it. I was thinking about all the fudge factors from Newtonian mechanics that cleaned up once relativity was worked into it. Assuming that the fundamental rules we have are complete would also be arrogant, no? Rewriting equations for how spacetime works would be much, much more satisfying to me than identifying a new particle. I want warp drive.
Also, totally different topic, my online personas are usually associated with Toucan Sam, so I find this interaction between us quite amusing.:D
I've never liked the theory of dark matter/energy. It always seemed to be a fudge factor thrown in to make the current theories work with what is observed. Astronomers have had good luck with that in the past, identifying planets and black holes based on gravitic effects, but they might have to a whole new approach to describe larger scales like this.
I truly hope it isn't dark matter. I *want* there to be a new theory. We'd end up learning so much more from it!
I think a lot of concern is coming from how to get the CO2 back out of the atmosphere. No one seems to know how many years it would take to return to normal even if we stopped all fossil fuels today. It seems like a very high stakes gamble to assume it won't be a problem later. I'm not suggesting we panic and turn off all the power, but lobbying against the mere mention of a problem seems foolish.
Will humanity end? Probably not. Will there be a major die-off as we scramble to find new food sources as the weather changes? Maybe. Is this a greater threat to civilization than country XYZ developing a nuclear weapon? Without a doubt in my mind. I would personally rather pay twice as much to use energy and avoid this possibility.
It's too bad the stuff is global and those of us who are chickens can't just go to the non-smoking section.
The amount of media coverage. International press. 24/7 news cycle. The constant lies. "Zimmerman is white". Showing images of Trayvon Martin when he was only 12 and not 17 (and 6'3"). Editing the 911 call from Zimmerman to make him seem racist. The media wants a circus. A race riot. They want another OJ trial, or Rodney King riot, or Casey Anthony or Amanda Knox level ratings. Who cares if the guy is innocent or guilty or whatever. What's most important is getting ratings and possibly causing a race riot.
I used to watch MSNBC until this blitz. I wouldn't believe anything they say now.
I would get the most amusement if he's found innocent, sues all the news companies for defamation of character, wins all their profits made while covering him, and uses the money to start an institution to monitor the media for this kind of deceptive practice.
He may have had his mind set on being in every future textbook. It's hard to go back to your job that reminds you of lost dreams like that. It's probably more shame and disappointment than guilt.:(
DRM in Linux is practically nonexistent, and I'm glad to see this gap filled! I was starting to feel lonely without being groped by a lawyer.

By total coincidence, I just came here from ordering the CT remake on DS. Apparently this cosmic ray burst happened to make me feel special today.
We charge them those prices for advertising their music to everyone and associating it with a positive memory?
And could you say "culturally" a few more dozen times in your next summary? It really makes you sound smart, and not full of shit at all.
For a moment, I thought they were pitching the movie "C for Climate Change"....
In the end, you cannot convince people who do not want to challenge their presuppositions and assertions. Good on you, sir. I always thought that quote was from Mars Attacks.

I've seen them try to make these connections before. Meh.
Says 'StarTrekGirl'...
The she-nerds always swing that way.

Oops, didn't meant to snip off that last one.
