Ignore my post (can I mod myself down ??).... He has left tty maintainer, but is still posting on the kernel mailing list. I hope he re-considers talent like his is rare .
One major 3D game not mentioned is - 1990 - Amiga - Corporation
It was released years before Wolfenstein 3D, you could even send a photo of your self to the company and they would digitise it and send you it back to play in the game...
http://hol.abime.net/3092/screenshot
It was incredibly hard but had great atmosphere - the main issue was the controls were impossible to use - It took the PC until about 1994 to get anywhere near the graphics of this game..
Wings, Rocket ranger and 'It came from the desert' were outstanding Amiga games from the 80's. The graphics were about the best there was at the time, The Music in all the games was excellent and all 3 games (except Wings) combined strategy elements with (fun) action sequences.
I played Rocket ranger for about 10 years and never once was able to finish it.... (there was no save)
Descent always seems so boring and unimpressive compared with Forsaken.
At the time it was graphically amazing and very very fast...Multiplayer Forsaken was amazing due to the weapon selection (and camera's on mines, etc)
I remember thinking at the time that Forsaken looked like it had been made in a different decade to decent. You truly felt dizzy spinning 360's dogfighting with what ever it was that was attacking you...
(btw I am referring to Forsaken on PC - You needed 3D acceleration to properly experience it (otherwise it looked like decent) and a joypad with strafe buttons was essential.
If peoples machines are wiped It will sort of serve them right - people claim they won't run Linux because 'its not shiny enough' and that they can play games in Windows.
Well they can still play the 'todays letter is U game'.
Why would google want to fragment and damage Linux?
They built their business using Linux and today Linux powers most of their infrastructure..
Fragmenting Linux/FOSS would in turn damage them also.
The main video driver I use in Linux is the non-oss Nvidia one - this is faster on Linux than on XP for me (gefore 8500) in every game (that has linux and winblows versions).
At work I have an intel 915 onboard (crap) videocard - the latest driver from Intel (which is in the kernel) again is faster (3d performance - benchmarks, etc) in Linux than windows....
I'm very glad they have chosen Linux for the kernel - They will be able to spend much more time effort on the UI/desktop and I'm sure they will put their own patches in the kernel
Why recreate something that exists now?
Creating a OS kernel from scratch is not an easy task - if it was everybody would do it .
I'm amazed at the amount of negative responses from Linux fans... This is what we have all been waiting for - isn't it ??
No matter how scary google's power is the main things are that:-
1) They are using Linux
2) They WILL make deals with computer manufacturers to get the OS preinstalled.
3) They will opensource the code
The only people who should fear this O.S is MS and existing Linux distros - although the competation and the opensourcing of the code will benifit the entire community.
I'm sure MS will still be the best at saying 'Have a nice day' and flipping CD's.
"Google Chrome OS will run on both x86 as well as ARM chips and we are working with multiple OEMs to bring a number of netbooks to market next year. The software architecture is simple â" Google Chrome running within a new windowing system on top of a Linux kernel."
Due to the similarities between this and the 90's video I believe there is a case of copyright infringement, maybe the creators of this vid should be gang raped in jail instead of kids downloading tracks. I would also like the designers of the video to have their hard drives checked - they appear to be into kiddie rape...
Maybe this will cause a split - between the people who pay for their news and the people who will read random (free) blog style news.
Imagine the difference in world view. The split and level of knowledge of 'real news' may depend on wealth - not an ideal situation..... However then again if Fox news charges and loses viewers this could help towards world peace....
Some more good news is that Virtualbox can now start to do DirectX3D - doubt it will be as fast as wine though. br>
The only thing I use wine for now is Civ4 and that works really well with wine - in fact it seems faster than windows...
In my experience (which is fixing other peoples Windows infested crap) the most reliable way of detecting a virus is to run from a Linux livecd.
Download clamav, then check the drive.
The reason I say it is better is because many virus/malware disable AV features in Windows so you can never be 100% sure - I know you can get clamwin but again some 'bad thing' could have disabled some it it's features...and linux allows you to write to folders that would be normally projected by the system (i know there is any obvious danger to this)
There has been at least 2 cases in the last month where a vista machine (one had norten and signed up to onecare,,,) which had av protection was not able to completely get rid of a trojan - even using clamwin - clamav in linux sorted it.
Time to get to lizard breath and get the 5 bits of evidence we need to call in the national guard .
Watch out round there the Hell cats are a nasty bunch

After those 2 emails mentioned in the post he has posted various messages today (29th July) . I'm not so sure he has quit just yet,,,

hunter was truly awesome. I mentioned corporation as it was the 1st 3D game i played (excluding Dungeon Master / Bloodwych which are not really 3D)

When they become self aware that man causes most fires we're doomed !

Or the 90's - My Amiga 1200 booted into workbench in about 3 seconds .
If existing NX clients work then qtnx is oss

Why bother with the PC is was rubbish at the time - Get an amiga...

Chromium is still very much in development... And what ever your view on ChromeOS it could be so worse...
Imagine if it were Microsoft doing it !

No.

It 100% does use a linux kernel - read from the horses mouth

however in my experience has solved things that paid for software hasn't been able to.
That to me is better than a random test
Personally i couldn't really care as I have a system that doesn't get virus's.
