  1. Re:Why were MP ever such a big deal? on Beyond Megapixels · · Score: 2, Informative

I routinely print 8x10's on an Epson 960 at a resolution of 360dpi and they look incredible. Every bit as good as anything I've had done at a professional lab (and usually much better since I have control over the entire process). I have a good 35mm with a small collection of lenses, but it just collects dust these days.

And it's not just about the immediacy of the image (as you infer in a later comment). Digital makes an excellent teaching tool for a number of reasons. Not only can you check the image immediately, but you can dissect the image by looking at the EXIF information and learn about what works and why. What was the ISO setting, shutter speed and aperature setting on this really good image and what were they on one that's not so good of the same subject at the same time of day? What settings are giving me the DOF I want for a particular shot? You can also shoot as many pics as you want to capture the changing light (or changing subject matter with small kids or animals) without having to worry about what it's going to cost in terms of processing and film purchases.

Your statements regarding "the only reason" you'd do something simply highlights your limited experience with digital and your bias toward film. Saying you wouldn't use digital for a letter sized print without giving a single reason is pure prejudicial thinking.

Given my own experience in digital I'd have to conclude that you've either never done digital prints using decent capture and output devices or you simply don't know how to do it right. The fact of the matter is you can make excellent 8x10's even with a 3MP camera, good technique and a good printer.

    200 hours web design work @ $15/hr = $3000

Except that all that design work doesn't count since it's a simple upload to the new host in order to be back on the web. He'd also have to prove that those were his hourly rates and even then he'd have difficulty using his own time to justify the "expense" by definition.

Now, if he can produce printing receipts for stationery and cards and other genuine 'expenses' he's got a good case. If he can even show expenses that would be incurred if the domain had to be changed, like a mailing to notify all of his current clients of the change, then he's got a better case. It sounds like $10,000.00 was an arbitrary number chosen so that it doesn't look like he's a cyber-squatter (and I don't think he is) asking for millions but is also a big chunk of change for your average High School student.

Based on the google cache it doesn't look like his business (or at least his own website) was too active over the last five months, but maybe most of his freelance work comes when he's off for summer vacation.

The right move is to train the twits that handle currency, not prevent legitimate uses of a product. Look at the covers of business mags and advertizements and a myriad other print venues that show currency. The numbers of people doing legitimate things with currency scans is also non-trivial. Anti-counterfeit pens are cheap and simply rubbing the note as it's handled would foil the amateurs as the feel is as distinctive as the look (actually more so).

As far as faith in the currency, I can't say I'm acquainted with anyone that paranoid. I get all my 20's from the bank and rarely carry anything larger. Merchants catch almost all of the phony stuff and faith in the currency you're given goes hand in hand with the level of confidence you place in the person(s) hired to handle it.
