It's worth pointing out that the opposite would almost certainly not be the case though. If he had done a presentation on "Gender Diversity in Physics" that reached the opposite conclusions, the complaints wouldn't be made.
Yes, precisely.
For an example more close to home for most of us, consider pretty much every non-political online discussion forum ever.
If someone posts something that's political but trendy, that's fine. But if somebody reacts to it, posts the opposite point of view or even just tries to be balanced or put it in perspective, he'll get taken to the woodshed for "being political", "flaming", etc.
I swear, for all my straight-middle-class-Christian-white-male-ness, I really honestly do not know why so many of us in this category are so unreasonably threatened by those who aren't in the category.
It's really weird. It has defies any logic.
Nice word salad (with crunchy strawmen!).
First, just because you don't like what someone is saying, that doesn't automatically mean that the speaker is "feeling threatened".
Secondly, some people no doubt do "feel threatened", because you know, there are actual threats against them. (Yes, I know, pretend there aren't, ask me to google for you...)
Truth spoken, world goes nuts. As is the norm now.
As far as whether it's appropriate - he's reacting to a huge political movement that's been going on for years now. He didn't just come out of nowhere and decide to do this.
In fact I'd say it's almost inevitable that highly analytical minds are going to react against this identity politics at some point. It's more surprising how rare it is to see reactions.
Do non-binaries count against the new gender quota?
I'm sorry; that question is based on logic. We can't have that.
Logic is just a construct used by white males to maintain their power, you see.
(Yes, I realize that is inherently contradictory and proves your point - what's a white male, if nothing is fixed in nature? - but it's inherently self validating too, so there, pfffft)
Not sure whats happening atm on legal weed, but a lot of the success came from the Obama Administration ordering the DEA to not to interfere with States that want to do their own thing.
Heres the big irony about all this;- The GOP likes to talk big game about "State rights", but apparently that only applies to states that dont piss off the GOPs party donors.
Really, its "Party donor rights over you" that are advocated for not state rights.
But when the Feds are saying you have to let the trannies in the girl's locker room, that's OK, right?
When Obama says he has a pen and a phone, that's OK, right?
You are just as partisan and inconsistent as you imagine your adversaries to be.
The problem open source mapping projects are going to have is funding and resources (especially people) unless they can get one or more big companies with deep pockets to fund such projects. You need satellite map, an army of people to pore over and process them, a huge amount of hardware, a well coordinated team to oversee the whole thing and write the relevant code, and a shit ton of money to make it all happen. Not saying it's impossible but it's going to be very challenging and such a project is already years behind what Google, Apple, and others are already doing. You're talking about a project that rivals the linux kernel or other major software project in complexity but requires a lot more people for data processing and hardware to actually function.
Well, you've just explained why Wikipedia "can't" work... yet it does.
Not saying that will be true of everything, but clearly it's possible.
Not to mention that OSM has been around for quite awhile, and clearly does "work" fairly well.
Haven't they learned anything from cases such as Boaty-McBoatface, Taylor Swifts Biggest Fan,or sending her to a school for the deaf, or sending Pitbull to Alaska
Leaving the choice up to the Internet, or even just Netflix subscribers isn't going to result in the best storylines, or even the storylines that necessarily reflect what actual people want to see.
Sounds like it's Choose Your Own Adventure style... the storylines and branches should already be created by the writers?
Past a certain level if you want to reduce some contaminants the increase in cost can be exponential. So before having an opinion I would like to know is:
What is the current limit? Is it reasonable? What is the cost? What is the new limit, it's cost, it's impact?
Discussing this without knowing the specifics is an empty talk about how evil they are. We could have much more environmental friendly products if you are willing to pay 5000 for what now you pay 100 so it's important to establish a reasonable limit.
I'm sorry, the name "Trump" has been uttered, so reasonableness is not permitted. He can only be eeeeeeevil.
I've lived through this all before. Reagan "was" simultaneously a drooling idiot and an evil genius, etc. The same kind of hyperventilating, all the time.
This is the logical outcome of decades of mush headed thinking.
Ideas have consequences.
First the eggheads think it... then the kids believe it... then next thing you know some commissar is telling you simultaneously that 1. gender is only a social construct, oh and 2. also you'd better get some ovaries on your corporate board.
Musk and Tesla will each pay a separate $20 million penalty. The $40 million in penalties will be distributed to harmed investors under a court-approved process.
Those are some expensive tweets.
Oh brave new world, that has such social media in it!
I dunno why climate scientists even bother anymore.
Scientists: "The world is going to overheat if we don't do something!"
Everyone else: We don't believe you cause I had to put on a sweater yesterday! And your data is wrong and sketchy!
Scientists: "Ok it's even worse than we thought and we're already starting to see the effects!"
Everyone else: Oh well, too late now. Fuck it. *throws environmental standards out the window*
It's awe inspiring. It really is.
It is rather awe inspiring. We might call it "street wisdom".
Hectoring people back into a pre-industrial existence was never going to work. And the average joe knew it, even if he couldn't articulate it well.
Now let's get on with technological solutions, because those are the only things that can help. They may not give you the same thrill of superiority, but we can't have everything.
Ok, so any time you take a solar panel and add some kind of energy storage device, that's a story now? There are a lot of ways you can store the energy - many different battery types, pumped water storage, molten salt I suppose. This is just silly.
But this one is special, because it can "Bring Electricity To Rural and Underdeveloped Areas", unlike any other solar panel connected to a battery.
But can it teach girls to code, and do something with, er, intersectionalities, whatever those are?
Amazon shows up on the scene selling nothing but books and many brick and mortar book business struggle to compete. Next, Amazon moves into almost all other types of consumer goods and more brick and mortar stores struggle to compete including some big ones. Now, Amazon is moving more and more towards a brick and mortar presence. The next step is going to be something ridiculous and hilarious, like, they buy up all of the closed Toy R' Us' out there and establish an immediate presence in all 50 states and in some sort of queer circular loop of cosmic irony, all the Prime members start driving to that store to buy shit because it beats waiting one or two days to get it shipped.
If so, great - will love to see how it goes.
Amazon beat those dinosaurs fair and square, by offering better value and a better overall experience.
If Amazon now picks up their empty brick and mortar shells and makes something good out of them, then good for Amazon.
We make that trade everywhere else. Might as well get some tangible goods for it.
It's worth pointing out that the opposite would almost certainly not be the case though. If he had done a presentation on "Gender Diversity in Physics" that reached the opposite conclusions, the complaints wouldn't be made.

Surely we can get more growth by having internet connected tablets for pets or something.

If California was serious, it would build a municipal Internet and damn the corporate sector. What's the Fed going to do, invade?
Actually enforce immigration laws? (ba dum ching)
There are a lot of things the Feds can do to pressure a state. You guys love 'em when it's a state you don't like ...

If only 's/witnessed/fought against/g'
Which is what California thinks it is doing.
Your "fighting" is often just injustice of a different flavor.
Well if dozens of people on a blog are concerned, who am I not to be?

That's what we're all wondering.
Wouldn't it be delicious if this derailed humanity's path to the stars long enough that we didn't make it as a species?
We've already "made it as a species", by any reasonable measure.
But I think it's pretty clear that Linus doesn't want to be associated with white supremecists and Nazis.
Were there ... a lot of those, in kernel development, before?
And I'm still not apologising for my gender or the colour of my skin, or the fact that I happen to have the common sexual orientation.
Oh, yes you are, yes you are ... you may not know it yet, but you are ...
But to a large degree also because I don't want to be associated with a lot of the people who complain about excessive political correctness.
Coming soon to this thread: Those people.
I know, right?
If only "those people" would just accept their super low status and their incredible wrongness!

The moon is a harsh mistress ...
Why am I picturing these spheres as 1980s cartoon characters, complete with little capes?
The spheres can be prompted to self-assemble into solids that are stronger, harder, more elastic and more durable than ubiquitous Portland cement.
"We can't beat the creature alone! Spheres - assemble!"
Which is why it needs to be all or nothing. Either fully automate everything, or else keep the human actively responsible for everything.
We humans are not good at partial attention. At least most of us aren't.
