  1. A good SETI Book on Explaining SETI · · Score: 1

An excellent book is "Captured by Aliens" by Joel Achenbach. He covers both the scientific search for extraterrestrial life, and also a rational approach to the phenomenon of alleged alien encounters. He has excellent informative and funny style. Its a great read !!!

  2. Re:I kinda do on Mainstream Books for Palm Pilots · · Score: 1

I generally like printed books over digital books, but in the future I think it will be easy to do index look-ups on digital book since you don't have to flip the pages, not to mention the fact that you could do a keyword search which you would never be able to do with a regular book.

I'm also a speed reader and when I'm speed reading I use a finger pacing and page flipping technique. Maybe when digital books become more advanced I'll be able to just push the next page button and have the next page practically instantly rendered. This beats the half second it currently takes me to flip pages :)

Maybe they could even add a digital pacer so I wouldn't have to use finger pacing. First I would set the pace in words per minute, and it would highlight the current word in, say, red and the word before it and after it in a slightly less bright shade. And it could have a built in delay at the end of each line to account for my eyes moving to the next line.

Now, if we could only figure out a way to make digital books minimize my subvocalization (everyone knows what that is right?).

  5. How about bloated code too? on Feature: On Being Proprietary · · Score: 1

I wonder how much of windows code doesn't really need to be there.

I have worked with a proprietary software product which came in source code, and I have added features to certain parts of it, but instead of modifying their spaghetti code I just wrote the file over--the right way. I have written c programs with the same functionality as the canned one with some added features in half the lines of code. One of the programs was a single file with over 16,000 lines! And all it did was print a friggin' one page bill! I wonder if windows has anything like this in it.

  8. Re:X, windows and things like Berlin. on Fifteen Years of X · · Score: 2

The design of the X Window system is a client/server one such that a program can run on one computer and display on another. X provides a library called Xlib that lets a programmer open windows and draw in them. X is responsible for rendering the graphics on the hardware so it contains all the device specific stuff. Widgets sets like GTK extend Xlib by providing high level calls to make user interface objects and, so, they run on top of Xlib.

Berlin is like X in that programs can run on one machine and display on another, but it intends to embed logic for user interface objects into the server to decrease network traffic. It also uses CORBA instead of sockets.

I found this on eeye's web page:

eEye - Digital Security Team did provide Microsoft with an immediate patch for the web server and complete details on how the vulnerability can be exploited remotely to gain system level access to the web server's data.

Since eeye sent a patch to microsoft does that imply that they have the source code? Also if microsoft has a patch why haven't they distributed it? hmmmmm

  10. Interestingly enough... on Patron Saint of the Internet · · Score: 2

Before the pope declared birth control wrong in the 60's he made an advisory council (probably of bishops) which actually concluded that birth control was NOT wrong. The pope didn't take the council's advice, however. Also, the Church has made formal mistakes before. For example, the Spanish Inquisition, selling of indulgences, and the placing of Galileo under house arrest for the remainder of his life for saying that the Earth revolved around the sun (holy sh*t, he was right!).

I'm not declaring my stance on birth control here. I'm just saying that nothing is set in stone, not even what the Catholic Church teaches.

I could be mistaken, but doesn't this line seem to imply that linux depends on Red Hat and that linux is nothing without red hat? I think red hat has and will do good things for linux, but linux existed before red hat and I believe it will exist after it too.

I agree fully. Linux might/will gain more functionality in the ease of use department, but due to its openness the ability of a geek to go under the hood, change things and customize the way they want will never be taken away.
