  1. Haynes Baby Manual on Geeky Gifts for New Dads, The Goodfather · · Score: 2, Funny

In the UK we've had the Haynes baby manual for a couple of years. Its brilliantly done and structured the exact same way they do their car manuals.

  2. Too late! on European PSP Release Date Announced · · Score: 3, Funny

Because they left it so late I've gone and got the wife pregnant because there was nothing to distract me.

Thanks a lot Sony its all your fault!

If I took some of the routes its suggesting for me to get about the outskirts of london I'd be arrested for going the wrong way down one way streets.

Still impressive considering local companies such as the RAC can't even give such clear directions.

Its still on display in Harrods (walked past it this lunchtime) the picture is sharp, but the colours are washed out.

It doesn't compare to the 40" LCD's from LG next to it.

The kind of people who buy stuff from Harrods that aren't souvenirs (mugs, keyrings etc) are people who don't care about price, or they work there and get a decent staff discount.

But the kind of people who are going to buy this will most likely have huge rooms and not really care about it taking a lot of space.

My Sony Ericsson T68i has the camera attachment and I get very good battery time (the phone gives me 240 hours standby and 5+ hours talk time with 30 pictures taken or 7+ hours pure talk time). Even the nokias battery time has increased impressively.

Perhaps you should get outside into the daylight and stop needing to use the flash on your camera.

Picture messaging isn't intended as an SMS replacement, its what they like to call an 'enhanced lifestyle feature'.

Its expected that people will use them to send pictures from holiday rather than postcards, pictures at parties when people can't make it, and to your current girlfriend when you've found a new one and you want to split up with her in the worst way possible.

  12. Not as popular as you think on The Growth of Picture Phones · · Score: 3, Insightful

Picture Messaging has been no-where near as popular as its been made out to be, two of the four UK networks only got 10% of the take up they'd been expecting over the christmas period.

Then the problem is actually getting people to use them, now while three of the four UK networks are offering a free trial period in the hope that people will continue using it

A lot of people from the research we've done said that they'll use the phones to take the pictures, but copy them over to a computer and send them through the email rather than paying 25-40 pence per message, we don't expect this attitude to change for at least another 12 months on most users.

This won't be another SMS/Text Messaging phenomenom.

The majority of people are looks, not features driven. Otherwise we'd all be happy with plain beige boxes, and while they are practical and do a job, they're not much fun to look at and impress everyone at LAN parties.

It's been a long time in coming, but no real surprise, working in the City in London has always required you to wear a suit no matter what job you did, which is why I avoid the city now.

  17. Re:actually, not entirely true on Web Designers Ignoring Standards and Support IE Only · · Score: 1

From experience keeping a flash web site simple is the key to success. when you start loading 4 movies just to get an intro going thats insane, you should never have to wait for an intro, because those first 30 seconds define whether you lose your potential visitor or not.

People need to follow the same rules they would with an HTML site, by making sure that no page is more than 50-60k in size unless absolutely necessary.

  18. Re:Pet Peeves.... on Web Designers Ignoring Standards and Support IE Only · · Score: 1

Sites were never meant to be completely flash ever, just look at macromedia's own site. The problem is that every man and his dog thinks they can build a web site that conforms to user interface principles.

Things are improving, clients and agencies alike are finding the short comings of pure flash, as is macromedia making changes to flash that makes it friendlier with human interaction.

  19. Re:Pet Peeves.... on Web Designers Ignoring Standards and Support IE Only · · Score: 2, Insightful

Your Flash peeve will be redundant, as the latest version of flash (MX) now supports the back button and will work with content inside the flash file, it's only a matter of time before most web sites are upgraded.
