Whatever. Real friends want to talk about the movie you want to see and therefore went to see. Real friends will talk about the book you read instead of going to a movie when there were none you really wanted to see. Anything otherwise is you doing things so you can interact with your friends and yes that is about social standing.
I agree. It had never occurred to me before to see a movie or obtain property because of how it would contribute to my social standing. Totally explains Apple, if there are a lot of people like this that exist.
I recently saw an article about a truck that drives itself down the road so that one person can both load and drive if they don't have the arm. We have a mix in our city.
Globalism has changed our ability to have jobs for people who were once farmers. Now the few that remain go to other countries, or we find a way to easily being in people from other countries.
Sadly, Americans generally do only care about themselves. The problem is you can't expect to have a workable society that way. You will always descend into civil war.
What happened to me, is the person started wanting vacation every time I had asked for it. They would always make up better reasons for it. They would start complaining that I wasn't there to back them up. Management got upset, and he instantly looked like a better worker than I.
Well again, consider yourself lucky. For health reasons I cannot move. Certainly not to a country without social health care. Back when I could have moved, I chose to be with my family instead. So far when I look at salaries elsewhere, once I consider what my families' life would become if i had to commute for hours a week, didn't have my parents help, cost for housing, less time with my kids, 700x the salary I 15 years ago wouldn't cover it. The benefit my kids get from having the grandparents available to go places with them all the time is not replaceable in another city and very expensive to have a stranger do it. Congratulations if you found that perfect balance.
I'm probably in a country where there isn't as much opportunity around as yours, to just float from company to company, and then move again if someone you don't like gets hired. For personal family reasons, I have to make do with my country. Only in very small workplaces where you are close with upper management is it a guarantee it will stay like that. The person I am talking about knew how to show a lot of love to management and they loved him. He was always looking for workplaces that would respect his values, so maybe he will end up in yours next. He would probably have no trouble getting hired.
To the comments above, are people really getting promoted enough to be worth that? I can't say I have ever worked with anyone who got very far where I work.
You obviously are lucky enough to be in a workplace that offers unlimited vacation, AND doesn't have anyone cut throat enough to use it on you to get to the top. I have worked with someone who used to openly brag about how he got this person or that person fired. And there was no doubt in anyone's mind if there was anything he found that could be used against you, it would be brought to the office's attention immediately. Someone like this would have no trouble poisoning an entire workplace. So, hope you never have to work with anyone like that.
Most company leaders could be innovating more than they are. Most could expand, do more with their company, and thus require more people to do work. But it is easier for leaders to sit on their duffs and collect their million dollar paychecks so they don't. They need some sort of initiative to create jobs. I'm all for stopping H-1B but if it hasn't happened yet I doubt it will.
You'll probably be one of the first to take advantage and wreck it for everyone, because you already can't let go of the fact that others are getting something for free.
One thing I think is for certain.. a lot of the people complaining about people who will take UBI instead of trying to work, will probably be taking UBI to not work.
Apparently lidar doesn't work in fog. And no Google isn't close either. Their human drivers have to take control a lot. It is difficult to tell how close Autopilot is, but I don't exactly think their cars are close to driving through construction detours without any human intervention.
Stop it with the whole 'they should use cloud' nonsense.. First of all, most airlines are still on mainframes, and most of them get uptimes close to Amazon. From a mainframe. Can you believe it?
Usually the problem is when they go in house they want their administrators to work for $15 an hour, and then when they can't find good ones and the systems fail, they throw their hands up and go back to paying way more for cloud services than proper admins would have cost in the first place.

Oh and I've never worked in a unionized workplace. I considered one once, but the union had capped the salary so low I didn't bother applying.
