  1. Yeah but they're not going to want an inaccessible case. I'm a small time dev and I'm always throwing in memory and drives. I can see it if the vogue today is to just buy a maxed out system from the start. I tend to buy a good base and upgrade. Could work for well payed devs I guess.

  2. I hope the components completely detach from the desk. If you cannot get into all sides it would be inconvenient to say the least. Also, I wonder how many people who can afford this are working on a PC for great lengths of time.

Every time there is a major technological change, companies find a way to pull more out of people. Things get more fragmented, and while at the surface it may seem like butterflies and rainbows in the end you find out after one twist or another you are either paying more in terms of inconvenience or you are paying more in terms of finances. Marketing often shows people the butterflies and rainbows so they will buy the product. Obviously, the people who currently have EVs are either in much friendlier areas or their use for a vehicle is more minimal than mine. I can envision a lot of people that drive only in the city, perhaps some don't vacation or A lot of the assurances you have given me may or may not be true in my area. Currently there are six EV stations that are not in my immediate city and it does not appear there are enough to get me where I would want to go.

I am aware that this is a good cause. This is why I have very high expectations that I will some day have an acquaintance that has purchased an EV and is able to do everything I would like to do and feels that they make no sacrifices. That they can drive on the highway at -40C outside and 23C inside and enough stations are there to support them. The vehicle is the second largest purchase my family will make, and I have worked very hard to be able to make that purchase. I take it very seriously that it will meet the needs of my family. I am currently 90% convinced that it will one day but not today.

Oh I forgot one more thing that is very important to me:
    - No significant delays on long trips.. That is a two day trip now in a gas vehicle should be a two day trip in an EV.

Obviously, if you have to wait for an hour at each charger along the way on a trip, that will add up into an extra stay in a hotel and an extra day of driving.

I have no emotional feelings about EVs. I just hope for the following:
    - No driving around or waiting for more than 10 minutes for a charging station, ever
    - Works properly in cold climates
    - Does not have a total ownership cost higher than a gas vehicle, and is as reliable as a gas vehicle
    - Will not leave me stranded in the middle of nowhere on a long road trip with no chargers to be found

If these requirements are met then I'll be happy and I'm sure the mainstream public will be too and everyone will buy them. There are always early adopters for every technology. Having early adopters is not the same as being mainstream, nor does it mean what makes early adopters happy will make myself and the general public at large happy.

Right, but families on minimum wage do what they need to do. When my wife was a kid she couldn't participate in organized sports because her family couldn't afford it. Something like music lessons was completely out of the question. My kids are in these things and it will pay off for them big time. It would be awfully selfish of me to rob them of these things just so that I can retire early. And no I don't consider this a frivolous life choice, I consider this keeping the promise I made to be the best parent that I can be; because if you have kids that is what everyone should aspire to do.

I have not always been there to drive my kids around to where they need to go or do things around the house. My wife accepts it but she's usually not happy about it. Furthermore, when I apply for a job companies don't really seem to care what I do in my spare time even though I have participated in projects sufficiently large enough to put on my resume. If you work in a place that has projects using evolving technology and they seek out the knowledge in the employee base that they already have and you are in a position to put your hand up, I can see how learning on the side could work. My place of work doesn't do that, and other places of work seem to want to put me in exact same kind of position because HR people work on keywords and they don't know how everything is related. I'm lucky that I have had a fairly stable job for my career so far, but the writing is on the wall. Now I must consider where I find the time for possibly constant job searches (ie. consulting) on top of finding the time to keep myself educated.

I just look around at the effort I put into my career versus the effort my neighbors put into theirs and average out the pay per hour and it becomes clear that technology was the wrong choice.

Even if it is possible I can guarantee you won't be enriching your kids' lives with extra-curricular activities or having any savings for post-secondary education.

Overall, the price of having all these services has not gone down at all. Capitalism goes to where it can make the most money, not to a place that is best for people.
