  1. Re:I hate spam, but ... on The Story of "Nadine" · · Score: 1

I delete spam regularly, but when Ive seen a few identical or near identical from one sender, I collect them. After I've got a handful, they get sent to their ISP. I follow up with a phonecall a few days later.

I've found that both the spammers' accounts, and the websites they advertise, have been pulled a few days later.

Ok, I dont kid myself that *I* did this. Maybe loads of other people complained too. I hope so. But if everyone did this once in a while... less spam? Certainly, it makes me feel better!

Now we also need to educate our friends and relatives to check hoax virus warnings before they propogate them...

  2. You have no idea how apt this is! on Do You Like Your Job? · · Score: 2, Interesting

I noticed this poll right after a presentation on "restructuring" and after we were invited to apply for voluntary redundancy... I'm sitting thinking "how much do I REALLY like this job..?", learning new phrases such as "displaced employees", and then I flip to slashdot... how poignant.

Also, it's interesting to note how many people say no, they hate their job. How sad!

Personally I love the _role_, or I wouldnt be a geek. I even like making customers happy - but don't tell anyone >:) Whether I am happy _where I work_ really comes down to the organisation and management. In the worst cases, they dont manage - they just try to control. That's when you know it's time to go.

There's nothing about - It's the new year and agencies tell us new jobs will be signed off, but even in permanent roles, vacancies are being put on ice once they have been approved, or before they are officially signed off.

To add to the mix I know of at least two situations where the person recruiting is so busy that he hasn't had time to interview people - catch 22.

Companies seem to be cut right down to the bone by redundancies, now that they need people it seems that they are having problems either justifying the new bodies, or finding the time to do the legwork of recruiting.

For instance, it would note if an individual lived at the former address of someone considered high-risk.

Great. So now if my former college roommates do anything bad and get on the high-risk shit-list, then I'm going to be detained at an airport.

You're probably already linked to them in other ways. For example, I applied for my credit reference file, and found it also contained info about my family's finances, from the address I left in 1994. Also, my housemate has come home before to find CID have let themself into our hall and are looking for someone we've never heard of. The electoral role is publicly available and is only updated every year... and so on.

There doesn't seem to be a lot you can do apart from correct the records when you find these things out. I don't think it is a great idea to monitor people's movements any more than normal, but these issues already occur to some extent.

  6. Sharp AX10 is lightweight but robust on Structural Integrity of Laptops? · · Score: 1

I bought a Sharp AX10, mainly because I wanted something very lightweight. It's thin, and classed as ultralight, or ultraportable.

I've probably treated it quite badly; its fallen off various furniture, it's been turned on its side while in use and then accidentally leaned on, it's had food and drink splashes on it, it's been chucked in a rucksack with my other pits and pieces and thrown about on a train.

So far (6 months) there have been no problems at all, although the comments above make me rethink how I should be treating the poor thing!

I'd happily recommend it - I'd never realised that robustness was an issue. Although the case is plastic you can knock on the lid when it's in use, no problem.
