  1. $350 PC's on ESR Says as PCs Get Cheaper, Windows Will Die · · Score: 3, Insightful

Ok lets just go along with this for a second and assume MS has no business sense whatsoever and would not adjust the OS price accordingly, will $350 pc's really be the norm? Even as PC prices continue to fall, it seems that most people are continuing to pay around $1500 or so for a computer because that is what they expect to pay for a computer. Systems that are really cheap have a negative stigma amongst consumers because they assume the computer is obsolete and will not meet their future needs. People are gobbling up multi GHZ machines even though a pIII would work for must people's needs.

I think the number one problem with online games is cheating. There have been countless times where I have been totally addicted to a game, and then a cheat ruins all the fun. People play online games because it is so much more exciting to compete against a real person. If the game becomes unbalanced, players will either move on to another game or use the cheat themselves.

I'm not trying to reduce the impact of this story, but the headline was a little sensationalized. HDTV media under this standard will not work but you will still be able to watch HDTV on the pre-2002 sets. I just want to clear that up for the masses who are too lazy to read the actual article :)

One note we can take from the history of a commercially unsuccessful product is DAT copy protection. DAT had the potential to become a consumer audio format, but the industry was really worried about copy protection since with DAT you can make perfect digital copies. They put in a copy protection "feature" called SCMS Serial copy management system. After a few years deck manufactures started producing decks that defeat SCMS. Maybe this will happen with HDTV media protection. If not, I'm sure somebody will figure out a way to bypass it or reverse engineer it.

Sorry, I guess I should preach the normal slashdot rhetoric that marketers and managers are evil people who are out to destroy life, as we know it.

Matching buyers and sellers doesn't mean that the purchase in question is a rebuy. Introducing a potential consumer to a product they are unaware of is part of marketing, but marketers don't put a gun to the consumer's head and force them to buy something.

I think you need to be introduced to marketing, here is the standard definition:

Marketing is the process of planning and executing the conception, pricing, promotion, and distribution of ideas, goods, and services to create exchanges that satisfy individual and organizational goals.

I think you're trying to incite that marketing creates demand which is totally false, marketing just matches buyers and sellers. Yes, there is persuasion involved but not enough to artificially increase supply. Perhaps you need to be introduced to the concept of "economics" and "marketing." I will be more than happy to recommend some good books.

  24. P2P leeching on The Theory of Leech Computing · · Score: 2
What I would like to see is a p2p system that has leeching turned on by default. One of the reasons why napster was so successful was because every file a user downloaded was shared regardless of whether they knew it or not. Imagine having a p2p system where the installer would automatically take a percentage of the user's HD space to share files that they don't even download. Instead these files are automatically propagated to high bandwidth peers throughout the network. The files that are mirrored would depend upon their popularity. The only problem with this would be that you probably could not have a completely decentralized network since you need a central server to keep track of downloads in order for the most popular files to be automatically mirrored.

This automatic mirroring would be an easy way to kill the slashdot effect when it comes to sudden demand increases for specific files on a P2P network (Think Starr Report). Of course, one could argue that with sharing on by default a popular file would have plenty of mirrors without such as system, but it would help in situations where time is critical.

  25. Artists need to reduce on PressPlay and MusicNet vs. Artists · · Score: 4, Insightful
Their dependence on record companies. There was a time when bands needed to a hit record in order to hit the "big time" but that day has long since passed. Serious musicians can always embrace live touring as a way to build word of mouth. Look a band like Phish who built a huge cult following by live touring before they even signed a contract with a record company. Having touring revenue can give a band the ability to negotiate favorable terms since they are not completely dependent on record sales.

Besides touring, you can use alternate methods of distribution such as: net downloads or you can even cut your own CD's and sell them through an online store. Basically, there is no reason for artists to be so dependent on record sales.
