Don't you see... it's not about me. I can patch and twiddle and get just what I want, but the millions of lusers stuck at 2.4 have NO HOPE of decent media performance until these issues are addressed. This has nothing to do with technology, and everything to do with politics.
"kicking and screaming to the brink of kitsch" and the image of duck manufacture, in the words of Yeats, "from a mouthful of air".... Such acts of surreality *must* not go unrewarded.
I got no corporation but I've got plenty of company, in the form of millions of users who are dying for LOW LATENCY and PREEMPT patches to get into 2.4.
This whole exchange is a snipe hunt. The point is that the secret sauce in the Big Mac doesn't mean shit to me, but the tradesecret interfaces in a 5700 GPU screw me hard. I'll eat the Big Mac (if I don't care about arteriolsclerosis) but there's no way in hell I'll buy the NVidia card.

Yeah, like being really stupid. That's why we forgot that we invented money, paper, explosives, china, the compass, domesticated animals and agriculture.
controversy for the sake of controversy. there will be gnome on userlinux, if ever there is a userlinux, and there will also be kde on userlinux, likewise. i'd like to see mr perens try to prevent a fork of a distro that intentionally excluded half of the highest productivity end=user programs available for the platform. heh.
Actually, as technology improves, the cost to an individual of deploying a weapon of mass destruction decreases. Eventually, anyone who feels like splurging with their milk money will be able to destroy the physical structure of the universe. The solution is not to deprive children of milk, but to put them all in separate universes.
As it is, they wipe their butts with three smooth stones, and force their women to cover themselves from head to toe and don't allow them to drive, all while living in a barren wasteland of sand and rock.

Umm... in other words, it determines who is more murderous and fiendish.
If Maya came in an amd64 native linux binary, it would kick some serious booty, but assuming that you need your pipeline filling up NOW rather than later, go for 4-way Athlon MPs with all the ECC DDR you can cram into them. More than 4-way, and you're paying premium prices for the chipsets. Less than 4-way, and you're wasting cycles that could be amortized over wait states. ECC is de rigeur just because you don't want to be chasing down defective dimms all the live long day. Similarly, I can't see any reason for paying the 10% performance tax of Windows 2000 Pro (the best of the Windows lot for SMP use) or suffering its 2-way limitations, unless theres some Lightwave feature that is critical to your operation.
Closed source drivers are the kiss of death for security-conscious installation environments. If I wanted to buy a pig in a poke, I'd get Windows 2003 Server.
Troll? What troll? I admit that, despite my 15 years of professional experience in the software and IT industries, there are large segments of these industries to which I have no practical, in-depth exposure, but in those areas of my personal experience, which are many, there just is no use for the Windows operating system in any of its various incarnations. That's not a troll, it's a fact. Consequently, it is perfectly reasonable for me to ask of those more knowledgable than myself... just what the heck is it used for? Didn't Windows go the way of OS/2? I know they still sell it on retail boxes for home use, but do they sell it for anything else?
A buffer overflow is a bug. While all exploitable defects allowing unauthorized priviledge escalation are bugs, not all bugs are defects which can be exploited to effect unauthorized priviledge escalation.
The other advantage of running XP in a VM is that you will never need to use their freaking activation system again. You can clone the VM to your hearts content.
My grandmother's Linux box boots into an XP VM, for example, straight out of init. (She needs it until Gnomemeeting can handle her USB Camera.)
I see. Millions of whining fools who should

Yes. (I get the feeling this is a trick
question.)

Yeah, interns are really productive, especially when they don't use birth control.
Well, that would depend on which end....
