What they do make I think is competitive in those markets. But an expanded lineup would really help.

The GGP and the GP had some very interesting points. For what I use a laptop for, a MacBook Pro is just overkill. It's too much machine and there's no reason to spend the money for it. The other laptops makers offer lower end models that are the right fit for me. If Apple did the same, I would consider them, but they don't.

Take note fanbois, You are not Apple, Apple isn't you and the fact that Apples are not worth it to me does not mean I think they are bad machines; just not right for me. If you want to spend your money on those things for whatever reason, more power to you. That's the free market. But when you fanbois make asinine comments like the above, you fuel the opinion that Apples are for sheep that buy based upon style as opposed to functionality. You give the impression that you will justify anything to back up your fanboi mentality. If Jobs produced a $10,000 piece of shit that looked stylish, you people would step right up a mindlessly buy it.

A computer to most of us is just a tool and as far as I'm concerned, the less time I'm near one the better.

I've been working in this business for 20+ years and I'm considering an MBA focussed on managing tech.

First of all, are you already in management or do you have managerial experience? An MBA is NOT a ticket into management; meaning, getting one will not enable you to automatically get into management. It doesn't work like an MD or even a JD. Usually, folks who are already in management get one in order to keep their job or to advance higher because that's the way it works in their big corporation - small entrepreneurial companies don't have this problem.

I have one. I mistakenly thought that I could get one and after tens years as a developer with a small amount of supervisory experience, graduate and jump in to management: NOPE! It doesn't work that way at all. Personally, unless your company tells you to get one and is willing to pay for it, don't bother.

I spent my own money to get one and I have to say, it was the biggest waste of time and money I have ever experienced. I would have been better off spending the money on a startup, lose it, and I would have learned MUCH more than in my program (GSU). Many of the classes are rote memorization, team projects in every class - even when it didn't make any goddamn sense to have one!, I even had a class where we had a scavenger hunt! and just a lot of busy work where you learn NOTHING.

The FTC won't act unless they know about it and if it's affecting a lot of people.

Notice how those small time telemarketers who violate the Do Not Call List never seem to get caught even when you file complaint after complaint with the FTC; whereas, the big corps who do it are caught and paraded around the media?

The entrepreneur doesn't start getting anything until the VC have hit their return goals. So it's quite possible that the company is sold, or what have you, for a few million and you still end up with nothing.

This is a major blow to an industry with an outdated business model. Scientific publication is starting to move beyond the need for the middleman, and I am extremely glad to see it happen.

That said, the major publishers will scramble to try and patch this hole in the business model, and they will probably make the overall situation worse before it really starts to improve.

Oh well. Got to start that process at some point. Go MIT.

Nothing personal to you, sir or madame. I see "outdated business model" time and time again on Slashdot as an euphemism for basically saying "not offering something for free".

First of all, business models do not become outdated. They may become worthless because someone has started doing business another way that eliminates one from making money from their current way of doing business. For example, in the beginning of the Internets, folks were charging for content. Then, someone had the brilliant idea that they don't have to charge and they'll have advertising. Thereby making most sites who charged the consumer for the content "outdated" and thereby making everyone else lose money. Then again, tell that to these guys

Now consider this, many folks are becoming independent contractors and doing crafts and whatnot at home to make a living - just like the pre-19th century factory system. Outdated indeed.

There's no such thing as an outdated business model. MIT is financing these publications by other means, that's all. Also, exactly how much does it really cost to publish this stuff online? The authors aren't paid. What are the costs associated? I don't think this is such a sacrifice for MIT or any other institution that does this.
