No electronics, no software. You'd better be a mechanical engineer, welder, or machinist if you want to participate. All the interesting parts are handed to you in a little plastic box. Budding EEs will have to be content with relays and limit switches. At least that was the story when I competed 5 or 6 years ago.

Well, I can't agree with you on this subject. I was part of the FIRST Team in two years ago. We traveled to a few competitions but mainly in Philadelphia and Flordia. Me and 2 other computer geek friends were there for documentation. We took pictures with the Maverica camera, we did the website, we secured a website to pass information to other team members (private and public, and yes advocates, we used Linux). While we didn't work directly on the robot itself, we did spend a lot of time on the computer side of it. Everything from tech supporting the Drafting people when they had problems (NT pooping out during 3dmax rendering etc) and even setting up majordomo for a news mailing list. We did the GIMP/Photoshop graphics of all the sponsors we had...

OF course I guess my situation must have been a lot different. I was in a vocational school during high school (Half at the normal high school, rest of the day at the vocatioinal school studying computer maintenance... I competed in VICA for those that know what that is). We did almost all of the work in the school itself. We had welding work on the welds and the robot was mainly built in our Electromechanlical/Robotics classroom lab. The Drafting class did the mpegs for that 'contest'. We even had carpentry build us the cart. It was a good experience I must say. I have tons of pictures from the event, I'll toss them on a website if anyone really cares to see them. Here is a picture of the "stage" which the robots would compete on at the national competition. As you can see, it was right across from Epcot in Disney... Pretty interesting and exciting. So if anyone actually wants to see some of these cheesey pictures, drop a line to hades@nospam.psu.edu and remove the obvious...

Don't be too sure about that! I haven't been able to see it yet but I really wanted to. Time is tight with a lot of us geeks! :) You're right, but there are still a lot of us who can't make it to the movies all the time... During the rescue scene at the end, there is 15 minutes with no dialogue at all, one of the longest such stretches in recent movie history.

The train scene at the end during that period. Jackson walked into the train. She can be seen in the background reading a newspaper...

She said the extras wern't allowed to converse with the actors in any manner, which I thought was strange. She talked to Jackson, jokingly, and he gave her a strange look, and then made another joke. Anywayssss...

To get back to my point (if i have one) during the non-dialogue scenes, I was looking around the theater to see what was happening. What I came to the conclusion, those scenes made a lot of peoples eyes bug out and a lot of "ohhhh", "oh god" and the such came out of the people. I thought it had a very positive addition to the movie...

Comics are bigger now that when I was a kid..you can see from the posts that age isn't the common denominator, but I do think loving comics might be connected to responses to the movie..

Well here in North Eastern Pennsylvania a lot of the comic book stores are going out of business. I've never got into the comic books, but I got into Magic the Gathering pretty deeply. I'm only 20, but I remember more people collecting comic books when I was younger then I did now. I might be, like Frued, a victim of my own enviorment. North Eastern PA maybe not be the most 'rising geek' culture... but what we have here along those lines is dying a slow death it seems. I'm sure there will always be comimc books around, but it's sapping to one of the lowest points I've seen in a while. I saw Unbreakable on Thanksgiving night... I got my tickets online from Cinemark. By the time we got there, there was only seats avalible in the very first row, so my neck was a little sore by the end of the movie. For a while it seemed like I was watching the Sixth Sense again... it's quite scarey when the *spoiler* kid took the gun and was going to kill the father... I guess those with kids could really feel my pain. Anyways, the movie was actually pretty good, except for not having shooting and killing terrorists :)

My uncle bought one for 'family' pictures, yet most of my family is in the upper 50's and rather stupid when it comes to any kind of digital technology.

I used a Sony Maverica last year in Orlando during the FIRST Robotics Competition. That model took disks and about 60 seconds of video fit on a disk, and I beleive it was 25 images fit on a floppy too. I was pretty impressed with it. We were using an older camera for a while, using the serial connection to transfer the pictures to the pc... Which was a rather BIG pain in the ass to do each time. But up to 4,500 pictures? Holygod, That's a complete family photoalbum for a life time.

I'm thinking about purchasing this dcm-m1 camcoder, but this being the first 'digital' camcoder maybe it'd be best to wait for the products to start pouring in and get a much better price and product becasue of it.

Check out IBMs storage site and see for yourself. They have many good business solutions. Sun is also a good manufacturer for mass storage.
