eBay sued Bidder's Edge in December, alleging that the Burlington, Mass.-based company had illegally trespassed on its site, violated its copyright and trademarks and slowed its service for eBay users
I've never heard of sueing for using anothers processing power. Bidder's Edge claims it uses ebay at offpeak hours, but who the hell gave them a right to access information to recycle in the first place? A while back I thought Bidders Edge purchased it's rights to gather the information from ebay... Maybe Ebay should offer 'licenses' for other commercial vendors to use?
Who knows.... only things I ever bought from Ebay were a Sparc, Monitor, and a few 8 Bit Nintendo Cartridges... None of which I would want to have a 'price edge' on.
Has anyone even really bothered with Bidders Edge? Usually jerk browsing can get you what you want on ebay. Setting the auctions up in order of ending periods is always fun. Seeing a cheap item at 16 minutes remaining and then purchasing it is kinda' neat... However bein on the other end of it is definately the short end of the stick.
Anyways, (as I go to bed so I stop rambling) I still believe if a company works hard to setup a service to the public, other companies should *NO* be able to take advantage of them.
Maybe this is Liunx developers wakeup call. Why not start designing an API in a similar style to the DirectStuff that Mickeysoft is? I know many, many users would switch over to Linux is more games were avalible. I see atleast 100 people a day online that say "If it wern't for the games, windows would be gone" and "if I could play my dvd's without windows..." but the later is being resolved thanks to the illegal DeCSS...
I'm sure there may have been a few different things similar to what I'm speaking in development, but none I know that have a great push behind them.
Also another issues that must be brought to attention... if companies are going to create these games, people must buy them. I don't condone paying for sometihng your not going to use, but I'd hate to see games being pirated from these companies that are starting to port games and create games from Linux.
Maybe I'm just a retard (I'm sure I'll have atleast 10 AC's reply that I am) but we desperately need development of a more game friendly API that would seperate itself from the OS in the fashion that DirectX does...
or maybe Linux needs something like MFC! (sarcasm!)
I'm happy I didn't see Windows Calculator in there... I remember doing homework last year for a course at Penn State and crashing Windows Calculator with simple calculations... Anywayssssssssssssss...
To use it in a commercial product, you have to pay us a royalty, but, you know, absolutely free for enthusiasts to use.
You have to pay a royalty if your going to sell the product, but do you have to release your source code with it? I know just because it's "open sourced" it doesn't mean it's gpl'd... Just a question... I probably couldn't understand 95% of the code anyway:-) *curses his cmpsci101 class for teaching MFC*
I think they'll be an interesting spawn of things being released with this open sourced..
I wonder how long it's going to be until crunch time. I wonder how many ip's are still avalible... and I wonder how long before ipv6 becomes implemented.
Here at Penn State we hve Internet2, it's rather interesting to use and very exciting in development... However, I wonder if all the older, more loved, software is going to be compatible with ipv6. I can possibly see a wrapper being setup for it...
Typical applications targeted by the devices include mobile internet appliances, wearable computers, PDAs, mobile phone companions, PC companions, mobile micro webservers, and smartcard readers.
We keep hearing more and more everyday of tiny little computers that are going to be great for wearable computers and micro webserevrs... But I don't see them coming in anytime soon.:-) The picture of the card here looks very similar to our 'SecureID' piece of junk:-)
Anyways, I think it would be great to see linux take shape in the handheld market, I wasn't tihnking something like this. But, more power to it if it's going to cause any kind of revolution.
But really... maybe you can call me a jocky computer geek, but I don't forsee myselfing wearing any 'wearable computers' at any time in the future. It's hard enough to get ladies as it is, that' all I need is... "Hey baby... My glasses run linux baby... DO I MAKE YOU HORNY?!?!"...
If for instance it's written backwards, nobody will suspect anything until it's too late and it's out.. send it just before their deadline.:) How many copies do they print a day?
Haha
I wonder if the MPAA would sue everyone who bought the newspaper with the code in it. That's plenty of people to sue.
My question is will The Motion Picture Association of America now be filing suit against the Times for linking to 2600's catalog of DeCSS mirror sites? Or will that Link disapear sometime before/after the West Coast wakes up this morning?
Can't wait for Emmanuel to rant and rave on about this.
MPAA: NY Times, your being sued for "hyperlinking" to a "hyperlink" collection of illegal hyperlinks!
When will all this stupid crap end and just let DVD be open before it becomes obsolete:-)
I can't believe Metallica is filing a lawsuit like this. Metallica has been one of my favorite bans since their first album back in the 80's. I remember listening to songs like And Justice for All, and listening to the messages they broadcast. Metallica was all about being rebellious and different...
Any diehard Metallica fan knows about the "selling out" phase the band was going through. Wether or not you believe they sold or not is not the point I'm trying to stress. Metallica would play anywhere... Remember the release of the Album (ugh) Load? Metallica was renting flatbed trucks and doing free shows in parking lots (which brought legal problems too I recall) for fans. I haven't liked Load or Reload, I've heard both in Mp3 before I purchased the albums, however I did purchase them anyway.
I wish bands of today would realize the money their already making from live shows and album sales and realize that their already making a nice share of money. I'm a musician myself. I woulnd't mind if people would 'pirate' my songs. That's what the musical art is all aobut IMHO...
Well, I hope I haven't gone off topic too much... I just hope Metallica looks back at what they've always been about and realize their contradictory...
It kinda' brings a damper to the way I think of Metallica, but I'll ALWAYS enjoy listening to popping in my Kill 'Em All and Master of Puppet CD's on a rainy day...
File transfers on IRC have no servers, they are established through DCC, Direct Client Connetcion, they don't go through the IRC server, enjoy trying to find logs for those.
Yes, but most ircd's (I think) report to you the filename before it's sent. Say you send something to johndoe on irc.madeup.net. Your irc client will send the initilization quest to irc.madeup.net and irc.madeup.net will send the request to JohnDoe. If JohnDoe accepts, then the Direct Client to Client connection is made...
Anyways, I tihnk it would be a waste to log it anyway... I'm a musician, I'd hate to have my work pirated, but hell... atleast then I'd have SOME fans:)
Definately looking like it could be a good game... maybe I'll dish out my money and buy a copy of this. Last game I bought was Quake II and haven't played anything since (after q3 disappointed me...)...
but anyways. I'd recomend grabbing the demo over here eidos ASAP.:) Time to try some multiplayer:)
Im surprised aol hasnt tried to port its software to linux yet. they cause call it LAOL.Does anybody know if it runs under WINE? i wouldnt think it does. Think of it like this... How many Linux users do you tihnk would actaully consider running the aol software? A large portion of them are completely anti-aol... I could see why it would be useful if families were using it, then linux could be ran on "the sons" computer, and the sister can use it. (I'm not sexist...) Yes, it does run under WINE. It's on the ipmasq application site... I don't remember the name but you can get information off the ipmasq resource site...

The Code Book
·
· Score: 1
- I keep a copy of Applied Cryptography on my desk, but find that I frequently have to hunt down my coworkers (who borrow it for "light reading").
Now there's a book I enjoyed reading. Applied Cryptology was much better then the Code book IMHO. I'm thinking about buying Applied Cryptology... During college I guess I'm being spoiled by spending my time here in Penn State's Computer Lab...
Maybe I should learn something important, like grammar while I'm here.:)
I took this book out of the Penn State Library a week or so ago. I didn't really get into it much however. The first two chapters were very boring in my opinion...The Mechanism of Secrecy and Cracking the Enigma were some of the more interesting things I remember skimming through.
I think a very strong interest in crypto is neccessary to really enjoy this book... I'm not big into crypto but I do think it's an intersting subject.
Anyone interested in crypto I'd say buy or borrow this book and give it a try yourself. It's not bad...
I just installed Milestone 15 on my desktop and it's speeding along like a cheetah. The installation went much smoother then the last release and a few of the bugs I've seen reported were fixed...
I'm glad mozilla is working on this project.. I hope it takes off.
Hope I read some more positive reviews on this release.. the ones from 14 wern't too great. The guys at the mozilla project are exceptionaly talented coders, and I think we should be doing some 'bugzilla' to help them out and get a browser most of us want in better circulation.

Shhhhh!!! What else would I do in work all day if I couldn't play with my Chinese yo yo...
PFFT!

Yes. *sigh* It was disgusting... I learned ANSI C a while ago, and doing MFC C++ just made me feel quite ackward and backwards.
You have to pay a royalty if your going to sell the product, but do you have to release your source code with it? I know just because it's "open sourced" it doesn't mean it's gpl'd... How 'bout a poll? Weird seeing none listed. hehe

Haha

I'm very tempted to purchase a classified ad in the NY Times and publish the DeCSS code in my ad...

All these laptops being stolen, and I bet I coulnd't MAKE someone steal my Thinkpad...
Does this bring new meaning to... The Blue Screen of death???
Yes, but most ircd's (I think) report to you the filename before it's sent. Say you send something to johndoe on irc.madeup.net. Just becasue I wanna see a serial killer simm, psycho simm, and a flasher simm doesn't mean I'm violent. :-) I keep that on the soccer field!
Definately looking like it could be a good game... maybe I'll dish out my money and buy a copy of this. Last game I bought was Quake II and haven't played anything since (after q3 disappointed me...)...

What's next? Microsoft owns the rights to the .BAT format? And we must pay a $10 fee for every created batchfile used? :P
Honestly, I think unisys is just pure greed.
