I appreciate the suggestion though in my case this wouldn't work.
We carry NO inventory. Fortunately we are 3 miles from ourwholesaler. They obtain half of their items directly from the manufacture, and the other half they make or have manufactured for themselves. They carry 5,000 to 10,000 unique items. They may have 1000 units of a certain item, and in five minutes have a backorder of 500 units. We stock only the items that are the biggest sellers, but even those we occassional sell out of.

Because of this it would be vital for post-processing of payments. I am sure that every store has their unique needs which require out-of-the-ordinary processing, pre-processing (authorization or approval), post-processing (actual charge, actual weight, and more) therefore a more flexible system is needed. PayPal seems to have become comfortable in its position. No competition causes companies to become stale and rarely move forward in developing new features for the mere benefit of the consumer, unless it will increase their ROI and line their pockets with more green.

I've also noticed that roughly 10% of customer that checkout, will not finish the process once they see that they are paying through PayPal. PayPal, as well as eBay, have not made good names for themselves. Increased fees for the people that are generating the sales for them. In the first month of launching our website I made more slaes that generated a higher gross profit than I've ever done on eBay - with the main key being with about 95% less effort. Due to past business relations, my colo is free for my freebsd server; which I own. So I have literally no overhead. Every sale I make is profitable, and I wish to expand on my offerings and capabilities to keep cost as low as possible for the consumer. The less time I spend dedicated to processing refunds the more time that can be spent on the web site, advertising or talking with customers. Oh, correction - my only expense is the Google AdWords, though this is obviously by choice.

Anyway, back to the original issue. Google would have the best chance at going head to head with PayPal, there is zero chance of Google folding, their advertising presence is vast and I feel people would trust Google more than they current do PayPal. Sure, the PayPal love/hate may be related to the old Chevy/Ford debate, it all has to do with your personal experience - regardless, PayPal has become inadequate.

I hear what you are saying as I feel that I am in the same boat. I have a website where my wife an I sell primitive countr crafts. We're averaging $2000.00 to $3000.00 in gross profits per month, netting about half of that. We are currently using paypal as well, though out largest problem is refunding. Items become out of stock and with the current paypal system the customer is charged immediately upon checkout. That leaves us with estimating S&H and providing refunds when only partial shipments can fulfilled. I feel that this leaves a unprofessional after-taste in the consumers mouth (and wallet). Some previous businesses we've had were good, other not so good, and with previously being divorced, our credit is not stellar. This poor credit holds us back from obtaining a virtual terminal; which would allow us to process CC's after the sale when we know the exact correct amount charge. Out efforts to provide our custoemr with more accurate (and sometimes lower rates) are shot down by our credit. So as it stands the consumer is the one that hurts the most, and becomes a mere inconvenience for us.

A non-interactive virtual terminal would suit the industry much more. Example: Paypal system current use their (PayPal's) trustworthiness and not the business, since it hides the consumers CC from us. A virtual terminal would need to be approved based on such things as credit ratings to avoid shady business from over-charging or errounously charging customers CC's because with a Virtual terminal we (the business) have the CC # in order to process this.

What would be more beneficial would be to have a combination of the two - allowing the customer to check-out, provide their personal information and CC information. Then when we've determined tha exact amount to charge, we'd access the limited virtual terminal. Enter the amount to be charged, the customer receives a confirmation email asking them to accept or deny the charges. They accept and we get paid.

I'm sure this has potential holes in it yet, but the foundation of what it could pave in regards to new doors opening for lower level new businesses, and home based businesses that have concepts that are working, but do not have the credit history to back it up with conventional means.

For the professionalism alone I'd pay .25 extra per transaction. The demand is there, it's just time until someone with the large bank account can deploy it. Hopefully this will be Google.

Microsoft saw this as an opportunity and copied it, unfortunately they failed in it's eye-candy (3.1 - 3.11 etc..). As Apple continue to become better, MS would release more versions, updated to compete. I remember seeing the early screenshots of OSX on rumor sites and then during keynotes. Sure enough, XP was out the door. In fact if I remember correct there were early basic versions of XP released - it would seem that MS wanted to make the general public beleive they were first at bat... Apple Music Store, Microsoft Music Store - QT, Win Media Player - If you see Apple release something, MS is not far behind to release the same thing. It suprises me that MS even bothers to change the graphics from the apple logo to their own.

Oh.. I love my unix (any and all flavors - it simply can't be beat), and I use Win 2k mostly due to work requirements, so the Apple Fanatic clause does not apply here. It's merely the facts - MS has historically repeated itself with copies. I can't remember the last thing that MS released first - actually thought it up, developed it, revised it and released it.

And it's not just Apple that MS does this to. Look at the recent Search Engine Wars..Google, Yahoo and MS.

Oh and lets not forget how MS pushed the whole USB is great.. it will be the standard! It supports so many things on the chain... ummm, but Apple always did this... In "The Day" I remember having modems, printers, FM Radio Tuners, Graphics Tablets, Keyboards and Mice all on a single chain.. no problem for Apple. At the same time USB was widely wupported by Microsoft (the company) Firewire was also debuting... Looks like Firewire won.. Apple won, again.

And for a company that everyone seems to down all the time - I must give it to Apple, last year (I beleive it was a year ago) it was reported that they became debt free - as far as I know they are the only one that can say that. Other than operational expenses (day to day) they owe no one.. zip, zilch, nada, zero. They must be doing something right. 10 years ago everyone said Apple wouldn't make it, they be closed in a year.. the saem thing again 8 years ago, then 5 years ago, then two years ago.. and then less that a year ago.

Fact is, despite Linux, MS needs Apple. Without Apple MS becomes a true monopoly. Hence the reason for MS's developement departments for Linux and Apple - They need competition, without it they lose!

My father and I once owned a successful local ISP - We resently sold the business, though due to the offer - not by problems caused due to our working together.

We had one problem with my sister working for us.
    We later determined the reason.

It was not caused by her work duties, moreso due to the lack of specifying her duties.

When my father and I started the company we knew exactly (to the letter) what each of our responsibilities were. He handled receivables, billing, banking, and purchasing in regards to available monies, overhead etc.

I handled all administrative duties, patching, programming, upgrades, analysis, determining expansion requirements for growth and current loads, etc.

We evenly divide client support. and jointly decided on possible advertising ventures to increase client base - though the final word in this was his. My final word came in the form of implementation, how to, the means to achieve it on a broad ratio.

Advanced or trouble tech support issues fell toward me to finish them up and bring them to a close.

When my sister came aboard with a wide range of experience, we simple dropped her in the middle of it, had a single current chore that she needed to accomplish, though after that we constantly felt she wasn't doing her part. We later determined that the flaw was that her duties and responsibilities were not defined, nor were deadlines sets.

As long as you specifically indicate what each person has on their 'virtual' plate, what their deadlines are - and what vocal power they have in choices made (whether none or only in certain areas of the business), then I do not see an issue.

Tardiness is something that you should be able to determine ahead of time. Do the family members current work? Have they been previous let go because of missing work? If they been at their job for year, then most likely you won't have a problem. Though in order to curb this, set a mandatory morning meeting every work day. Specify that the meetings are mandatory and missing or being late for more then two a month will mean immediate termination.

Another possiblity, if you perform a lot of on-site work, schedule these service times at the beginning of the day. The customer will let you know if the person is late or didn't show up. Then if you need to terminate you can say because the client requested that they have someone different service their needs. This takes some of the wieght off of you and puts it directly on the shoulders of the offender.

Require you girlfriend to do banking first thing in the morning. Banking statements will have time stamps on them and you'll know if she there on time. Let her know that it is mandatory that the banking be done first thing to ensure all cash and deposits are avaiable as soon as possible.

Working with family provides an immesnse amount of closeness and fun time. I've share numerous times with my father that lead to hours of laughter. Good Luck!
