Careful with 1 and 2, they might count as fraud, even if they are trying to fraud you in the first place. As for 3, check out spamcop.net, they have scripts that are great for finding out contact info for free hosting services and such.
I've noticed this from my experience working as the sysadmin for a tiny ISP. For example, I'd often get calls about tough win9x/nt problems that our tech support people (both of them) couldn't solve while I'm at my desk hacking away at Perl code. In order to wrap my mind around the win9x problem (remember, it's something that two tier 2 quality tech support people couldn't fix), I had to dump all of my cached data about the code I was working on from my short term memory to make room. When I got back to the code, I would have to rebuild my problem solving information cache back close to the state it was before the call, because I'd need that information again to continue where I left off. This would usually take 1-15 minutes depending on the complexity of the call and the familiarity of the program. Given that lots of people would call me about lots of stuff, I figure that sometimes I lost at least 1-2 hours of working time per day.
If only I wasn't pulling triple duty as a sysadmin, programer, and tier 3 support... but that's another story.
Yeah.. see, it's this show about a guy named Ranma.. and he.. uh.. has this curse where he turns into girl when splashed with cold water.. and he's got this fiance who's sister's think she should mary him because she hates guys and he's only one half the time.. and uh, there is this chick named Shampoo who turns into a cat which is bad because Ranma hates cats and... Huh? Why would I need a new white coat? Wha-- What are you doing? *AHH* NOOOOO Not the muzzle!! *mmph* *mnph* *mnnnpphh*.... *halled to funny farm*
True. I do generally agree with what you're saying. I think the directors just love messing with our minds by saving any hint of romantic resolution for the last minute. And even then a hint is sometimes all we get, like with Tenchi that has been released thus far. Oh well.. I guess it's that kind of thing that makes it worth watching ep after ep after ep to get to the end.
Evangelion: "In End of Eva", Shinji gets Rei, Asuka, AND Misato, at one point or another. Dig.
Trigun: Wolfwood gets Millie.
Cowboy Bebop: You're right on this one. Fae bows to no man.
Bubblegum Crisis: Leon gets Priss (in Tokyo 2040). It's a classic tale of "Good cop meets punk singing biker chick who is a member of a secret vigilante group that has more technology than nasa could shake a stick at."
Ah, I think you may have missed the point. The old man in the story did not "turn the other cheek", but instead soothed the enraged drunk by being kind to him. I think the basic moral of the story is that being kind and understanding can solve an issue just as well or better than an aggressive action.
As this applies to the main topic, I think we can help reduce the problem by having a caring attitude toward others, which will make them less likely to post that kind of thing in the first place.
... that I don't watch TV much any more, and broadcast TV not at all. And as long as all the stuff I buy (mostly anime) is on DVD, I don't need an HDTV because my monitor is plenty HD for me.
I encourage, no, BEG all the slashdot posters bitching about it to remember that it's a luxury in the first place, and if you don't like it, PISS ON IT. You of all people should know that there are lots of ways to enjoy yourself besides sitting in front of a box that will only show you what someone else wants you to see.
We now return you to your regularly scheduled trolling....
After looking for all the warez boards I used to frequent back in the day, I couldn't find a single damn one of them. Not that I'm particularly proud of my l33t d00d days, (hey, my income was a whopping $60/year, and I *did* use it to buy software) I think warez boards are an important part of BBS history too. I'd be happy to contribute my own list but alas.. the drive it's on is long dead.
No flames ment, sorry. Yes, I have a hard time getting flash to work even in netscape 4.7. The plugin loads, but doesn't play correctly if at all. Oh well, can't have it all I guess.:)
Btw, I'm running Konq on FreeBSD at the moment just fine. Last I checked, FreeBSD != Linux. So now I guess IE's got nothing on Konq (numbers wise), except for the java issue.
Right on!! I for one LIKE Taco's taste in anime. I don't want to wade through piles of news like "crap company X says they might release show Y in our lifetime" just to find one or two good bits. If he finds something important enough to post on slashdot, then it's something I damn well want to know.
Actually, it means "your house". It was originally an insult, but it was adopted as a symbol for association, just like english words like "geek" and "gay". (Reference: Otaku No bideo)
Despite that, what he said applies to many americans too. I know this from personal experience... The value of my anime collection is verry close to the value of my car.
Oh, yeah, you can't plug a DVD player into
a VCR that's connected to a TV.
Not always true. At home, I have my apex 600a plugged into my vcr which is plugged into my tv. With macrovision turned on, dvds play just fine. I checked to see what would happen if I tried to record a tape with macrovision turned on; During the recording, image quality was degraded to fuzzy black and white. Playing back the copy showed no image at all. With macrovision off, it copies and plays just fine. I suspect it depends on how your VCR is implemented.
I'd trust the NASA people more. For one, they have a better technical understanding of the situation, and they still have to please the public or else they would face budget cuts.
What I find really interesting is that in netscape 4.76 under FreeBSD the banners actually cover up part of the text from the article. I wonder if this was intentional or not...
Who ever made the web site certainly was drunk. According to their page, I need to have java script enabled in order to read the article. Linx to the rescue:)
Macross has not been released yet in an unedited form. So, if the tapes you have are not straight japanese, your tapes are illegal. (unless you bought the original japanese version and then subtitled it yourself).
Well, it depends if you're watching Macross or Robotech. In Robotech, it's a super powerful mech fuel used by the humans.
------ MACROSS SPOILER ------
In macross, it's the nick name for the race which 10,000 years ago spawned the zentradi and meltradi races and ultimately humans as well.
------ END MACROSS SPOILER -----
How they came to this drastic change when the butchered Macross to make Robotech I can only guess at. As you can probably guess though, this is one of the core reasons why Macross fans are so angry at Carl Macek. Imagine taking "The Matrix" and turning "the matrix" into a powerful super weapon for defeating the agents and then changing the name of the movie to "Cybertech". Imagine what a stink that would raise with Matrix fans!
You're right, but don't forget that the pacific ocean sort of acts as a filter. Most of the stuff that makes it over here does so because *some* audience likes it, and anything that has insufficient redeeming qualities will stay over there. I think that's why fanboys (such as myself) sometimes get the impression there is not any non "dbz/sailor moon/pokemon" that sucks.

I got an idea. How about slashdot offer pay accounts? If you really don't like the banners, donate.

You have an app that is crashing another app? Try not running everything as root.

That's correct. I didn't want to say "under linux" because, well, I'm not running linux. I don't think the OS has anything to do with it really.

Or did you say Macross but mean Robotech?
Why yes! Good guess! It's dead, btw. I wrote on it "RIP spam-drive".

My collection of non-suck anime, te-he. :)
"Cats on mars" is a song from the Cowboy Bebop sound track by Yoko Kanno. Snag it from napster.
