In the UK, the general perception is that a degree from a university in the USA is equivalent to a set of good A-levels (exams taken at age 18, usually in 3 subjects, sometimes in 5) in the UK
That second company should just make their software uninstall their competitors, then stop and not install anything else. Then they could sell it as anti-spyware software and make an honest living.
The problem is we can't change those things. We can, however, change how much we pollute. Let's say over the next 50 years natural sources of pollution are responsible for a 4 degree increase in average global temperature. Man-made sources account for a 1 degree increase. Believe it or not, there will be a noticeable difference between a 4 degree increase and a 5 degree increase--not to the planet, it won't be affected, but we sure as hell would be.
Obviously you've never read a peer-reviewed journal in your life and have no idea what you're talking about. Or maybe you don't understand what the point of "peer review" is. The whole point is to debate, critique, and attack each others research.
It is still surprising to me that only 1 in 4 bothered to include alternative polution sources...
Because they're professional geologists, so that goes without saying? These are peer-reviewed scientific journals, not introductory textbooks. If a physician writes an article claiming some chemical causes cancer, is he going to also mention everything else causes cancer? Is he going to mention the sun also causes cancer? Of course not, because he most likely is not a complete and utter moron, and he assumes his readers aren't either.
Find me a single geologist anywhere who has ever publicly stated that anthropogenic sources are the only things that cause global climate change.
Plus, the flash-based mp3 player market is much more crowded, so I doubt Apple could make inroads against the Creatives and Jen of Swedens and iRivers of the world.
If they can make a really inexpensive (to produce) mp3 player, and put it in an ipod-like casing with an apple logo, they will sell a lot, even if its more expensive than the competition. They can capitalize on the ipod marketing, but sell something with a lot more favorable profit margins.
My idea (and I'm completely serious, I think this would work if it caught on!) is to get people to use IM and chat room clients that check the grammar and spelling of anything they type, and then refuse to transmit anything that's incorrect. People will over time develop impeccable linguistic skills!
Then part II: When speech recognition becomes widespread, make the recognition software only recognize clearly enunciated words (and then check them for grammar!).
Think about it. We could have an entire society where everyone speaks perfectly clear, grammatically precise day-to-day English (or whatever language you speak in your country)!
They can sell the toy, but they're not forcing you to buy it. Don't want your kid to have the CSI toys? DON'T BUY IT! If you don't buy it, it won't be under your tree for Christmas!
Parents? But I thought Santa...OH MY GOD. You ruined Christmas for me.
So let me get this straight: We can make fun of all the misspeaking that Dubya does, but we can't mock Gore for saying "I took the initiative in creating the Internet."?
I was criticizing the context. It would be like if someone criticized Dubya's way of talking, but they did it in a grammatically mangled sentence (and in this hypothetical situation they weren't being ironic).
Ever since the Gore claim to have "invented" the internet, its history has been the subject of misinformation and ridicule.
Considering Gore never claimed to have invented the internet, you've actually managed to include misinformation in a sentence criticizing misinformation. Well done.
You're addressing a bunch of people on Slashdot, and this is the thing I find most tiresome about this place. It's like an expensive university. You have a bunch of reasonably bright, incredibly priveleged, sheltered people in one place, and they're convinced that because they're OK, the world is just, and that anyone who isn't happy doesn't really deserve it.
That's a really good analogy, one that I never really thought of. I went to an urban, public college for undergrad, and now I'm in an expensive, private one for grad, and the difference in attitudes is amazing. It's full of people who, to paraphrase Ann Richards, were born on 3rd base yet think they hit a triple.
It's the same illusion that sells a lot of religion & low-grade self-help. Here's the gist: Don't worry that you don't deserve what you've got. Everyone deserves what they get. Don't trouble yourself about those people who don't want to be happy (or eat, or have clean drinking water, or a place to live.)
The sad thing is we live in a society that could provide a decent standard of living for everyone if we really worked at it. My vision of a successful, stable economy is one where people who want to can work 9-5 jobs and live a comfortable middle class existence, while the people who really want to be successful can go the extra mile if they choose. We used to have something a lot like it, but now people are forced into insanely long work weeks just to get by.
A Slate article talks about the failure of holograms to really catch on and the future of using computers to create true holographic video ala Princess Leia.
Larger image, higher resolution, and less clothing, and they've got my consumer dollars.

she didn't contribute all that much. She was more of a hanger-on who enjoyed listening to Babbage's lectures and then writing about them.
So she was the first programmer groupie.
Unfortunately, she was apparently the last as well.
How would you find out easily? Universities are accredited by different organizations.
There are only a handful of reputable accrediting agencies. It's not really that hard to tell if a school is legitimate or not.
In the UK, the general perception is that a degree from a university in the USA is equivalent to a set of good A-levels (exams taken at age 18, usually in 3 subjects, sometimes in 5) in the UK
Then the general impression in the UK is wrong.
Maybe if he would expand on why Linux doesn't boot we might have a better chance of helping.
Maybe linux just sucks?

Windows XP and Office 2003 recently became available in Welsh
You can tell it's the Welsh version because vowels are disabled...

If global warming is truly human caused, how could sea levels have been highest during the Cretaceous Period, millions of years before mankind?
Uhhh, what? Things can only have one cause? Are you intentionally being obtuse?

Uh, no. In that case the quotes would be around "claim" in order for it to indicate the poster knew Gore really didn't claim that.

As I understand it, Hollywood casting is 0wn3d by the Pink Mafia, which is why we get pretty boys like DiCaprio instead of real men like Jackman.
Oh yeah.

Leonardo DiCaprio, as Jones Jr?
You, sir, deserve to be pistol-whipped.
Come on, that summary doesn't tell us anything. You want us to have to read the article or something?!

They could probably explode at any minute, are toxic, and will probably delete all my data at any second.
I didn't know there were any Packard-Bell users left...
