Usually it's the corporations that have the habit of coming up with and using buzzwords, surprised to see a govt. owned company using it:)
Aren't they supposed to be *cough* beyond such things *cough* ?
Are you kidding?! The Chinese government has been coming up with weird slogans and catchphrases for decades. Hell, they're known for it. "Great Leap Forward", "Achieve the Four Modernizations", "To be rich is glorious", "the Gang of Four"; it's a very buzzword-centered society.
Anyway...I still say it's all bull crap and junk science.
So it's basically you, an anonymous internet crank, on one side, and reputable scientists on the other. Man, it's going to be TOUGH to decide who's more credible on this issue!
If Kerry comes in, you can be sure the Republicans will return the favor.
Were you living in a cave during the Clinton years? The republicans were a lot more likely to block judges than the democrats are now. It's called "hypocrisy", and it's the single defining characteristic of the modern republican party.
There is no such thing as a fair political debate on slashdot. Period.
Give me a break. The same people you're mourning have no problem modding pro-gun-control or pro-social-spending posts down. When the shoe's on the other fault you suddenly hear squawks of outrage, but they're not that convincing.
going to limit the ability of the RIAA to get the names of people downloading misic. i mean if the gov't can't do it, then why should the riaa be able to?
Ok, you know something everyone, this issue are more important than the damn RIAA. There's no reason to bring them up.
Yes, that's probably the least credible statement I've ever seen on slashdot. Just so you understand the impact of this statement, I'll highlight the important words: that's probably the least credible thing I've ever seen on SLASHDOT.
Just out of curiousity, what would the PSP be backwards compatible with? You don't expect to put your PS2 or PS1 discs in a portable do you?
Even if the discs wouldn't fit backward compatibility would still mean a huge software library for the PSP. Every PS developer could easily copy over their games to whatever media the PSP uses. It would be a hell of a lot cheaper and faster than porting to some new system.
Ahhhh but you forget! Why sell b2b in bulk when you can sell b2b in bulk AND also get half the 18-24 year old males in the US to shell out $50.00
That's my point entirely. They're doing it for the money. Which is fine. But then their fanboys start saying how you can't really criticize them because they're only releasing the retail game out of greed. Uhh, excuse me?
It's always been like that. Id has always been at the top of the industry, but they've always had company. The idea that they're somehow at a higher technological level is just hype. Like right after Doom came out, 3dRealms released Rise of the Triad. Now, no, ROTT wasn't nearly as good as Doom, but the engine was doing the same sort of things. Unreal Tournament was on the same level as Quake 3. If Id is so good that it requires all these interviews and updates and hushed tones of awe, why do other game companies with anonymous game coders come up with the same technology at the same time? (or at least right after?)
Look at this game it's a horror version of Halflife. THEY DON'T CARE ABOUT THE GAME.
THEN THEY SHOULDN'T SELL IT. Just sell the goddamn engine. But if they're going to sell it retail then they better goddamn well expect criticism. How hard is it to hire one person with like, an imagination? God knows they have the money.
I wonder how much different the final version will be from the alpha that I played so long ago.
Which alpha? Doom, Doom II, Quake, Quake 2, or Quake 3? It's all the same game, just with progressively better graphics. It would be nice if they got their inspiration from something other than bad heavy metal album covers.
Yep, that figures. The top ranked post in this article is some moron criticizing this idea because it's not enough. Yes, this is so much worse than the 99.9% of companies that do absolutely nothing.
A lot of those companies at least write checks, which this guy apparently stopped doing. And a sizeable number of companies do have volunteer programs. It's really not that generous.
it's just not a mandated standard for society at large. Am I way off-base here
You're right, it's not a mandated standard. That's because we don't like to "mandate" things for our citizenry, and let them decide for themselves what to use.
Keep in mind that the Parliament wasn't meant to be a lawmaking body; only recently has that changed, but the Commission and the Council still have more power.
Listen, I'm just impressed and very very surprised that it turned out to be an actual system rather than a VC scam.

What the hell else are people going to think though?
Whenever I'm asked questions like that, I say to myself "What Would Jeff Costello Do?"
I'm putting money on the K5er's. Slashdotters aren't exactly tough.
I don't think either side would acquit themselves well. Though the cops may have trouble; they'd be laughing too hard to effectively make the arrests.

The primary difference is the the Democrats block candidates because the candidate is likely to be a fair and impartial judge.
Hahahahahahaaaaaaa...ohhhh good one. You had me going for a minute there, thought you were serious. Good joke!

Hey, I didn't just grant myself the title "God-Emperor", I earned it.
A similar program om Windows could do far more than just hose someones Home folder, because most Windows users runs with high privileges.
Tell me about it, when I installed Windows it forced me to give it power of attorney...
The guy was a moron.
Well the fact that he expected us to believe that "public beta" line does call his intelligence into question.
What is wrong with giving students a computer with a multitude of programs and tutorials on it and let them figure it out?
The best way to educate kids is with Infocom games. Worked for me.
No, I'm not kidding.
Using Limewire? A likely story.

Metric is for people who can't do math in their head, and need to use their fingers.
Keep in mind that "I just got a new CD burner!" is information enough. Very few people really need the burn speeds listed.
But not, it seems, do to any perceived lack of quality on the part of US undergraduate and graduate education.
