    On Windows2k+, given a trusted vendor, I can click on a web link, click I agree, and a few minutes later have a new piece of software setup and all dependencies configured and taken care of for me.

    The *nixs still have problems agreeing on a standard path format. . . .

    (though granted MS's solution to this matter is not quite so. . . nice. Heh. They just support all of the different oddball paths ever used. :) Thus the prevalence of a C:\windows directory on NT installs, heh, sooner or latter some application starts installing crud to there. :) )

    Anyway, if you take one camera angle and add to it a heightmap, You will have a 3d view, but only from one angle. You can't rotate the scene or anything like that. Well, you can, but there is no mechanism encoding what, for instance, is on the back of an object. You could do a limited level of rotation on the scene, and it would do neat perspective effects (objects closer to camera would move more than those farther back), however if you rotated around the scene 180 degrees.... yeah you see what I mean.

    It would look pretty damn cool looking from the front, however.


    Actualy this will all be taken care of one day by AI that will be able to interpolate the details in real time.

    Until then. . . . ;)

    Yah I have seen demonstrations of various '3d from 2d' technologies, and they all do have this problem. :(

    They do look exceedingly cool from that one view angle though. :)

    It actualy is a 3d surface, just a very hollow one. :)

    Ok, its been.. what? 15 years? since they started talking about HDTV? And you expect the people who can't even agree on a simple hi-def format to adopt and commercialize this?

    Hehe.. ok. I'll put this in the pile with all of the other schemes that are "only 5 years away".


    Feh, TCI was promising that tv on demand was only five years away back in 1991.

    Weird how it took cable modems, DSL, and the rise of P2P networks to even get anything near tv on demand, hehe. :)

    (for those of you not in the know, TCI is now outa biz and was eaten up by AT&T, which some say itself is quickly going down the tube)

    You can probably go to a lot of theaters and get those goggles to watch a 3D movie. And I'm pretty sure those paper goggle thingys are dirt cheap, and the 3d movie is just made with 2 cameras & projectors instead of 1, so why would it cost $25k to make a funky little algorithm that can handle 2 CRT's and a dime store goggle set?

    The difference is that this system extract real 3d DATA which could then be further manipulated.

    Horrid game, icky multiplayer, yuuuck. The game timing is all off, there is NO endgame to it at all, Blizzard pretty much set it up so that you HAVE TO rush. :( :( :(

    On their forums when people complained about this they (Blizzard) just told the players that they 'weren't doing it right' which is a pretty f*cked up attitude to have about a game. . . .

    but I remeber one student who built a physics program that would take numbers for any formula and give you the answer.

    And this is where I believe the key difference lies.

    On the older calculators (the newer ti-89s are just insanly powerful, though they too also have their clearly defined limits) many students had to build their own applications in order to utilize their calculator at all;

    and if a student knows the mathmatics well enough to translate it into a TI-Basic program, then heck;

    they know the material, let the calculator do the make work. :)

    Though one danger of this is that after relying on the calculator too much that the student may lose the abilities that they once had

    Of course if somebody just downloads a program from the internet. . . . (I was also too cheap to buy the ti-graphlink, I figured out how to make it all work myself. :) )

    Anybody who is familiar with emulation likely knows about the Super Eagle anti-aliasing engine.

    Which, err, heh. Totally Friggin Rocks. :)

    The output from a Game Boy Advanced is of a high enough quality that when paired up with SuperEagle engine it looks great even on a 19" or so computer monitor. I do not know if a 20 inch interlaced display would be better or worse. . . .

    Of course 2xSaI kicks ass too. :)

    I wish that more companies would just implement those systems in Hardware, they definitely kick ass. :)

    The telco that I work for (outside America) lets customers use their own handset if they want to.
    As long as it supports SIM cards.


    Uh, no. Telcos in america would HATE that idea, they LOVE to sell you a new phone whenever you move over to their service.

    An extra few hundred $$$s there way.

    There's been so many times I've needed to write down a girl's number, didn't have a pen or paper, but I just pulled out my cellphone and punched it in.


    Just punched it in being about a 2-3 minute proccess. . ..

    Ugh phones are SLOW for data entry. :(

    Pissed because I have to watch my grandmother suffer in pain when she walks around everyday because her money grubbing HMO does not consider her condition "life threatening."

    Pissed off because the one last remaining public school in the city for children with behavioral disorders was shutdown so as that the district could make that years financial report look at that little much better.

    and I am pissed because of all the rich ass fucknuggets out there who think that those little poor people should stop bitching and that life ain't that bad for them and that they are all just envious.

    Uh, Jacuzzi, heated. This isn't a bathtub with a Plasma screen, it is a Jacuzzi


    and of the jacuzzi (you could not concentrate on the experience because of the damn movie).


    Being relaxed is being relaxed, and it all depends on the movie. Sure watching a horror / action flic may not be best for this, but a quiet romantic movie would be just perfect for time with your SO.


    I know there are a lot of rich geeks out there, but surely they will not be taken in by this, will they ?


    Me and my friends are already drooling over it. ^_^

    Your first two paragraphs are pretty much accurate. So what are you proposing? The government is responsible to tax the rich people into poverty so all of "us poor folk" can have rich people things too?


    How about instead the government just cut the bullshit and stop creating make work for the rich?

    Over the course of 10 years.

    The committee members (hardly engineers, but all upper crust. . . .) have kept on getting richer and richer with their nice cushy "consultant" jobs, but the city populous as a whole is getting fucked.

    Then there goes their entire nest egg in one fell swoop. Or at least a goodly chunk of it.

    People who work hard and then have bad shit happen to them should NOT just be considered "poor shit luck" cases and left to the winds, hell no. People who work hard to help out society should get something back from society.

    And quite frankly they should get back a lot more then they currently are.

    Dude, public swimming pools use lighting, and pumps, and so forth.

    You see, it is something call INSULATION. Rubber, silicon, whatever.

    That and the screen isn't IN the Jacuzzi's water, it is mounted on a pedestal that is at reasonable viewing height.

    Yeesh.

    Now if you went through the trouble of getting out a high powered saw of some sort, taking the Plasma screen off of its mounting, sanded away the surrounding panels got to the wires, dropped THOSE in the water, turned on the power;

    then yah, you MIGHT have a safety issue.

    But if you go through all of that trouble either:

    A: You should be aware that a toaster would be a bit easier to implement and just about as effective

    or

    B: Whoever you are trying to kill is going to notice the big ass mess and that their 42inch Plasma TV is split wide open.

    There is this huge gap between the rich, and everyone else. Things for the rich are selling really well, while the rest of us are living in a recession.

    People don't understand just how rich the rich are in the U.S. The incomes at the top are in the hundreds of millions of $$ per year. The top 5% own more than 80% of everything in the country. That means that 95% of us are trying to get along with 20% of everything. (If you have a mortgage, you don't "own" your house.)

    The Bush tax cuts, which go almost entirely to the top 1% (and were opposed by 70% of the public), cost TRILLIONS of dollars over this decade. It means we don't have medical care, prescription drug coverage, repairs in the nation's schools, repairs of our bridges, and now they are even cancelling student loan programs. AND because of this the government is now using our SOCIAL SECURITY money to cover the money going out to the tax cuts. And this is because a few people at the top are making SO MUCH MONEY that cancelling this small tax cut would pay for all these things!

    If people undstood just how much money is now being moved from regular people to the few people at the top they might start talking about doing something about it.

    I am among those of us who already have a cellphone, that is why I would like to not carry a second handheld device - hence my original question.

    And so am I, and I do not want to pay for another one.

    (well actually I didn't pay for this one, prepaid plan so the phone is the razer, heh.)

    I want my PHONE to do ONE THING and ONE THING ONLY.

    Make calls.

    Hell I find it easier to carry around an address book then used the damnable system that most of these devices have in them.

    Not to mention that a lot of phones are hardwired into ONE carrier service plan, (or at least you have to hook it into their plan by buying it from them in order to use it with them at all, without using 'alternative' means. ::grins:: ) do you REALLY want to have to choose your phone carrier based upon your desire for an MP3 player?

    Not to mention that depending on the carrier (and especially for a high end device like this) odds are that you would have to sign some sort of long term contract in order to keep on even BUY the phone.

    Which would significantly cut the potential user base down. Who the hell wants to sign a long term contract just to get their hands on a MP3/MP4 player?

    I would like to only have to carry a single handheld device. And there is no way I'll stop carrying a phone around. Therefore I would like to see the kind of features this device has in a phone rather than in a device that does not obsolete my phone.


    Because it would only add to the complexity and expense of the device.

    For those of us who already HAVE a cellphone, or do not WANT a cellphone (or at least do not want to pay a few hundred for one. . . .), the addition of a cellphone to this device would merely turn us away.

    Besides, doesn't some line of PDAs or another have a cellphone built into it? Or at least an add on modual to enable cellphone functionality?

    (good question, I -think- MPEG4 plays on one model or another of PDAs, not sure)

    /. posted an article about three years ago (no I am NOT searching the archives to find it damnit!) about how vertical keyboards where better for the user and how those little thingies to prop up the back of keyboards just fucked up wrists more.

    People still don't listen to be about it though. . .. bending your wrists back, back, letting them go forward au natural, good. Yeesh.
