right, because nobody has the right to criticize in your wonderful utopia. if i put in enough money and time i will earn the right, though. your world is very strange, and talking of my criticism of rms while constantly mocking jesus really doesn't make any sense. maybe there are people like me who dislike the GPL (hint: there are).

heh, i pretty much agree exactly with you. ports work fine and osx doesn't really /need/ the gpl, working with gpl software in an area where it is the minority makes it so everything hedges around the gpl stuff, it's best to just use a freer licence that doesn't hobble system integration.

  4. heh, static linking isn't bad on Byte: FreeBSD vs Linux Revisited · · Score: -1
if you run software that runs into processor speed limitations it would be good to have it statically linked, as there is a slight speed increase gained through static linking. that is why db applications like mysql recommend static linking. so on a server, as long as you don't have many(dozens) instances of the same program running at once, statically linking it is a good idea. dynamic linking is of course a better idea in general because it allows for libraries to be updated without recompiling everything on the system. but on small but modern open source systems the penalty for that is not too bad because you have all the source anyway.

I looked on google for something to link here, i found a good write-up but it is 5 years old. it's all pretty much still relevant but it doesn't address the issue that almost all the code run on the small free unix servers has the source code available. i'm sure that effects the conclusions one should draw, but i'm not sure how much it should.

    here is the paper

many projects wish to be free of the stigma of being associated with the GPL, GNU, and RMS, i don't really see how i could possibly contribute enough to the savannah project to convince them to completely change their raison d'etre. i also have absolutely no reason to because what i would be trying to create already exists at sf.net.

criticism is not the end of the world and i'm sure the savannah project can weather it and complete their goals, even if they are of dubious worth.

kids with decent upbringings will certainly see the importance of subverting their parents' authority as a step in growing up and being able to face more of the real world without their parents' protection/pandering. rebellion in a child isn't because the parents didn't raise their child right, it's because the kid has to eventually function as an adult and needs to learn how.
