    Also, you should know that load shedding, like not running pool pumps for an hour during peak load, can delay construction of new power plants as well as investments in the T&D network infrastructure to reduce congestion.

    And your pool can be green in both senses of the word!

    Every kid in the US, Japan, Europe, etc has, in the last 24 hours, held one of these devices to their head. If it does indeed cause problems, we're going to be in a world of hurt at some point in the future.

    Well our population crisis will be alleviated.

    As for Japan, I think they have a lot more to worry about radiation from their nuclear meltdowns than from any cell phone.

    And by the way, the court will not send soldiers to collect a civil judgement. So even the point you thought you had is moot.

    They'll just send the sheriff to seize and sell your stuff.

    This all said he wasn't the kind you think of that just lay you down and start cracking things - X-rays were taken, and when some issues were apparent the next step was a fluoroscope to see how things were in motion.

    Isn't that massive radiation?

    People worry about Fukushima, but a fluoroscope is a lot more.

    There is a reason an American nuclear reactor hasn't been built in this country in 30 years. It's called regulatory bottleneck.

    We could be more like Japan, which was able to get nuclear plants built, like Fukushima Daiichi.

    "Cost over time of construction" is basically meaningless. By that rationale, no factories should EVER be built, because the construction should be seen as an end cost rather than an investment in a product.

    Which is precisely what is happening in the USA.

    We aren't making anything anymore.

    Absolutelly. They would lose less money to pay 50 guys walking in circles or just standing there. The greens have absolutely no common sense.

    The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act?

    Seems there are a lot of projects in Vegas tearing up good roads with that on the signs.

    And like other road construction in Vegas, they often screw up the sewer lines and not fix them, so it smells like a sewer.

    Libraries around the world also pay large amounts of money to vendors that have already digitized AND full-text indexed decades if not centuries of newspapers.
    ProQuest, Gale, EBSCO, Infotrac, Newsbank...
    I expect those vendors made a bit of a stink that Google was trying to put them out of business.

    It used to be legal to provide a service other companies were providing already - even though that cut into their profits.

    It was called competition.

    Now with the DMCA, MPAA, RIAA, Homeland Security (the new content police! Don't we still have terrorists to find?) monopolies are not only not illegal, it is often illegal to compete against them!

    The old oil barons would be proud! Gov't not only not against them, but enforcing their monopoly against competitiors.

    Most people interpret the latter as "greed", particularly since the vast, vast majority of humanity is NOT compensated in perpetuity for the very useful services they provide, once they have done so. The evil is not the desire to receive fair compensation, the evil is continually demanding payment beyond the point where fair compensation has been delivered.

    One can say the same about doctors.

    They keep you well enough to be able to not die and keep working so you can keep paying, but sick enough to keep coming back.

    Meanwhile they have the FDA, etc to quash competition, just like the MPAA and RIAA use the Department of ("We'd rather protect the content industry that actually provide...") Homeland Security.

    I'd say it is far more likely we'd have a zombie attack within my life than a cure (or even non-barbaric treatment in most cases) for cancer.

    I'd say a reliable version of Windows is even more likely, or a non-corrupt Congressperson.

    I'm convinced cancer is either by its nature unbeatable, or some very powerful interests are keeping it that way.

    We don't make a single TV (*) or DVD player in the US, and I wouldn't be surprised if there are NO US computers or motherboards.

    * Sylvania TV's the only "US" brand, are made in Communist China.

    Once you get through that, though, the solid core doesn't care about a solution for baseload electrical generation. Their answer is some kind of neo-primitivism involving no energy or extremely limited energy consumption.

    Perhaps a fine dream, but I don't know how you get 6 billion people there.

    You don't.

    You have 5 billion die from starvation, freezing, heat stroke and lack of medicine and you only have 1 billion to take care off.

    Of course, the really big fear most people have is that one day they flip the lightswitch and nothing happens, ever again.

    We are heading there. Rather quickly.

    Global warming may or may not be true - in any event Peak Oil is most certainly true and even Big Oil admits it and if we don't do something about it soon, billions will starve, and die due to communicable diseases and lack of medications to treat chronic illness.

    If you aren't as healthy as a horse and living on an isolated farm you'll likely die.

    A lot of people are talking about global warming to get people off of fossil fuels, even though they know about Peak Oil, because if they were to mention just how close we are to running out, people would panic.
