If no one notices a few kW disappearing due to A/C load other than ricers, than why do all modern cars disengage the A/C clutch when you go wide open throttle?
If you push the pedal to the floor with the A/C on you'll get your performance, at the cost of warmer air until you are done.
Doesn't help the auto update doesn't find the security upgrades and even the "Check Now" manual update button gives an error saying no updates are available.
VNC is so slow it barely works well over a (very good, with 1GB backbone) corporate LAN.
Some programs hang or take forever to update the screen, to get certain things to finish in my lifetime, I have to disconnect my VNC session and reconnect - just so the screen updates fix it.
Tight VNC got the same issues.
VNCing into a DSL'd Linux box is glacially slow. It's horrible.
Speaking of betas, why does turning on the beta updates enabled option in Windows Update never seem to find any updates on a Windows XP SP1 box?
(you aren't going to say upgrade to SP2, right? Right? Right??:)
On the subject of update problems:
I can't just point the finger at Microsoft for update bugs - Firefox 1.0.4 says no updates available even when I press the button to check now, even though Firefox 1.0.5 is out and it fixes critical security bugs.
Just tried it 10:03 pm USA Pacific time on Firefox 1.0.4 on Linux. Tried it on Firefox 1.0.4 on Windows XP SP1 earlier - same deal.
And why does Linux Firefox put options under Edit (that's dumb - Edit is for text editting functions) -> Preferences and Windows has it under Tools -> Options (which makes more sense) but the inconsistency sucks because it is confusing.
And then the universities will close CS depts or fail to keep them up to accreditation standards, leaving one with an even more useless degree, and even those that want to try to make it in the field can't.
Then when the US does realize it needs it own IT professionals it will be too late.
It will probably mean the US is hurt by terrorists using off shore outsourcing firms to poison US code and hurt our economy and defense or just for countries that hate us to cut us off from the programmers - we won't be able to function.
When even a modest house costs over a million dollars, $160K/yr is a lot less than it looks people.
Back in October 2001 I saw houses in a normal seeming neighborhood in San Carlos (a nice train ride from San Jose) and they were $800K then.
Don't forget the very high state and local income taxes, sales taxes, property taxes, and fuel taxes either! That's the People's Republic of California.
Even if you got the time and money to kick back and have a beer on your front porch, don't. That's illegal.
After the 2 hr commutes (each way) you'll probably want something stronger than a beer. (note to people wanting to accuse me of supporting DUI - I said AFTER the commutes, not BEFORE)
As for being replaced with someone younger, what about when you can no longer deal with 100 hr weeks when needed? Either due to physical limitations or due to a wife who'll divorce you for not spending time/thinking you are cheating.
Many posters here on Slashdot won't get a clearance because their politics are too left. Even though many of us have moved to the right after 9/11, they'll see something you posted earlier on and hold it against you, or even something current, such as being against the broadcast flag - could make you seem "too left".
If you get a CS degree now, your "career" will be spending days asking "Do you want fries with that?" (or "Usted desea las fritadas con eso?" - you need to know Spanish to get any job in any major city with a lot of customer interaction it seems - yes I know there is a leading vertically inverted question mark at the beginning of the Spanish - blame Slashdot for eating it - Slashcode isn't internationalized - or reliable - or portable to any real database - but I digress) and nights spent surfing monster.com on a 486 over a 14400 dialup trying unsuccessfully to find work in the IT field.
Unless you live in India, it which case, GO FOR IT! YOU'LL GET A JOB IN NO TIME!
I only put in 5 hours of overtime a week to run nightly processes.
Ever hear of the "at" command? It is cross platform and will let you spend those late nights at home with the wife (scratch that - this is Slashdot) home Linux server.
If you are fired, always apply for unemployment even if you think they'll deny you.
You can always appeal and if you win, you'll get back unemployment.
A boss can say anything they want - unemployment will only deny you in rare occasions (like if you threatened to blow the place up, never showed up for work, went to prison, etc).
If you don't apply because you think you'll lose, you will lose.
No one needs to be killed over a few miliamps of electricity.
You don't have any idea how bad the electricity prices are here in Nevada.

Guess the moderators don't like me telling the truth about the state of Commie-Fornia.
Considered dangerous software?
Or a security risk?

Getting a business degree.
Or becoming an outsourcing consultant.
No mention of the school or city - hard to falsify that statement.
Are you an M$ shill?

There can only be so many CIOs.
Very easy for supply to exceed demand.
There should be a law which says that anyone who puts in over 10 years sweat and work into a company will get some kind of pension from that company.
So many people will get fired at 9 years, 364 days.
Just like many companies give people 39.5 hrs/wk.
They don't have to pay benefits since its only part time.
And you thought getting off a half hour on Friday was because they were being nice.

I work at Microsoft as an intern ... If my product were about to ship, I'd work longer hours for a few weeks, but that's not the case.
g ger30.html
If it's Longhorn, you won't have to worry about it shipping for quite a while.
I also haven't heard of them firing people... well, for just about anything
Such as blogging?

More like getting fired for not living in Chennai, Mumbai, Bangalore or Hyderabad.
Firefox's update feature is broken both automatic and when you press the "Check Now" button.

Good work Firefox!
Putting a description in the main user table would be bad design.
DELETE FROM usertable WHERE usertype = (select usertypeid from usertypelookup where usertypedesc="PEDANTIC TWIT");
U need flash?
"user" is a reserved word in SQL.
It would have to be something like this:
DELETE FROM usertable WHERE username LIKE "Gu%en";

The DMCA allows circumvention after a work is public domain although it is still illegal to traffic in the tools.
Your system is misconfigured.

Please uninstall Linux, install Windows, verify autorun is not disabled, and make sure your shift key isn't sticking.
That should fix your problem and bring you back into legal compliance.
P.S. Throw out any contraband (such as green magic markers) while you are at it.
It did way back in the day, with copy "protected" floppies. And then abandoning it, and using more copy "protection" and abandoning it, etc.
The computer world keeps learning, and then forgetting.
Perhaps some needs to give free Ritalin to IT industry execs.
17 USC 1201(k) already makes VCRs tht don't enforce Macrovision illegal.
