ET: Quake Wars used a modified version of iD's Tech 4 (Doom 3) engine, which included the first generation MegaTexture tech. Don't forget Prey as well, that was Tech 4 too. The new Wolfenstein is Tech 4.
But definately agree, doesn't make financial sense to go with these so called "AAA" engines with their massive licensing costs. Especially with the state of open-source engines improving constantly, and cheaper engines such as Torque or Unity providing excellent visuals for under $1k, games technology just isn't the cash cow it once was.
Both my university and workplace (of similar size to yours) use Sophos. They provide a number of centralised management tools, centralised update servers etc.

Indeed, LaTex is standard in academia, I keep all my written work in LaTex format. I then usually convert to PDF for submission. Its pretty :

Sounds like Carmack may be setting things in motion to shift his attention to Armadillo Aerospace.
