I work in the telecommunications industry. It has always been standard practice (at least where I work) to use DC power supplies for data equipment if they are co-located with voice equipment, since most voice equipment uses -48 V DC power.

This has the additional advantage of utilizing the battery backup system (required for voice) to also back up the data equipment's power.

It depends on the area of the country. In some areas, tariffs, taxes, and the actual cost per kilowatt hour can easily equate to a $400 monthly electric bill for a decent-sized house.

I have a small apartment, and my monthly bill is almost $100/month.

    I completely agree with you.

It is ludicrous how much money must be spent on a PC to run the newest games with the highest graphic settings--easily upwards of $4,000 (USD) or more.

And once you get that PC, you'll still have to muck around with various settings to get the game to work right, and worry about keeping your drivers up-to-date, etc.

But on my XBOX 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii (yes, I have all three of them), I buy a game, put it in the system, and it plays! Imagine that! No installation, no drivers, no graphics settings, no hardware conflicts.

And the cost of all three of those systems is less than half the cost of a decent gaming PC.

At my previous job, the corporate boneheads who ran the company from their ivory towers resplendent with golden parachutes decided that we were going to "go green" by turning OFF every computer every night.

Unfortunately, what they did NOT think about (in typical corporate executive fashion) was that the IT department liked to push updates to computers every night. Since all computers had to be turned OFF (as opposed to being in the global-warming producing low-power state), all updates had to run whenever we booted our computers up in the morning.

This meant that it took me 30-45 minutes most day to get my computer to boot up while it installed the various patches that the IT weenies pushed onto my computer the previous night.
