Dialog parts would be interesting -- now we're back to the ability to act again. But if one "good" reader (still talking about books-on-tape style) could do the reading and then submit it to whomever could add the special effects. Make it a muli-track operation much like you'd lay down tracks for a song at separate sittings.
I agree with this idea, and would be an excellent aid to those with vision problems, much like the "talking books" you can rent at the library. With this you could do the same thing, but not have to take a trek out to listen to it.
I think it is a sign of the current technology industry as a whole. With the high unemployment rate in the US, especially in this arena, companies can "pick and choose" due to the glut. Which allows them to minimize their esposures and risks.
I guess in your situation, you need to determine if you really want the position and accept the hiring requirements, or (try to) move on to another company. Unfortunately many, many companies now perform the same types of background checks, so leaving may put you right back in the same situation.
In the past there were problems with water freezing between the tiles due to the spacing between them. Turned out that if they spray the tiles with ScotchGuard(tm) it solved the problem. I remember seeing the commericals from 3M years ago with a can sitting on the nose of the shuttle. Looked, but haven't been able to find a good link on it, but here's one that references it.
I currently have 3 "trinitron type" monitors at home: 1-Compaq 17", 1-Dell 19" and a Sony 21" professional series. My work machine has a Compaq P1220 22" which is also aperture grill. Have been happy with them all and will continue to use aperture grill over shadow mask for the crispness and clarity. I've looked at the TFT offerings in 17" and 18" sizes and for me, they just aren't there yet. Even if Sony does get out of the "small" monitor business, hopefully other vendors will still continue to provide these sizes in glowing glass until the LCD quality catches up.
We never hire "unproven" staff and put all perspective or potential employees on a 30 - 90 day contract. This allows us to determine if (1) are they competent, and (2) can they interact with the other team members. If things don't work out, it's very easy to get rid of the contactor, much more difficult with perm. employees.
Phillips has 40x media available, a special right now for 100 pack spindle for $20, with a $20 rebate at Best Buy. (That's here in Raleigh, NC, but probably have it at other places as well).

It IS not important that the OS is OO. It IS extremely important to the Average user that the system is:
User Installable
User Usable
User Manageable
Ultimately, if you expect it to be a real product that real, average Joe individuals are going to use, it needs to meet those criteria.
I'm sorry, but you won't give the grocery store clerk across the street a copy of RH 6.1 Intel or Alpha, who is already running Win98 on his Gateway and expect him to install/configure/use it successfully. I realize that optimizing the kernel for performance is relevant and beneficial especially for higher performance server environments, but please remember the "guy across the street" -- he just want's to effectively "Use his computer". (Let's see him try to install RH 6.0 on an Alpha he picked up at the local hamfest.)
Is the current speed of Activewin a good indication of what we can expect from Office 2003?

The GPC's on the shuttle are actually IBM AP-101S systems, not PDP's. See this link.
