  5. Another Money Making Opportunit on Microsoft Shared Source -- With a Twist · · Score: 5, Insightful

This looks like an excellent opportunity for MS to make more money, and spend less on development costs. From the articles it appears that if I modify the code in a really good, general purpose way -- they get a copy of it back for free. They can then incorporate the changes and sell it royality free (to me). But if I sell my modified version, I have to pay royalities per copy.

Whole new twist on outsourcing your development activities to save money.

I agree that the security of the system is lacking and probably wouldn't take a lot of effort to circumvent.

However, as a parent, having access to my child's progress in school without continually bugging all 7 teachers is an excellent idea. It gives me an opportunity to see if he needs help without waiting 9 weeks. (Mind you, he has NO problem with asking for help when he needs it.)

You indicate that your parents are putting you through hell daily to make sure you've done your homework -- is this an indication that you've had problems getting it done in the past? Maybe if the HW is finished before the fun is started, they might lighten up a bit in the future.

  13. What the Market Will Pay on LCD Price Fixing? · · Score: 2, Insightful

The subject is probably the answer. If people are willing to pay the current prices for the convenience of a flat LCD monitor to recoup deskspace then the price may very well be fair. I'm considering the same to replace my son's 17" Trinitron on his desk because it's huge and takes up too much room to give him space to work. The flat screen LCD would work perfectly. I suppose you could say "Price fixing" with the the apparent disparity between the LCD monitor and the total cost of a laptop -- but it's really comparing apples to oranges. Each have separate markets.

I'll buy some paper, school supplies, emergency ink cartridge... from HomeDepot -- but never software from there. Not that I don't like them, but I just tend to shop on-line for software. So they appear to be minimizing their risk (maybe), and if it doesn't work, and enough people complaing that they can't find package "X", the next memo could change that philosophy. 18. ABC News Report on Strike on Iraq · · Score: 1

The first salvo was a barrage of 40 tomahawk cruise missiles and attacks by F-15 airplanes in a surgical military strike against a "target of opportunity" near Baghdad, believed to include Iraqi leaders, U.S. officials said.
Attacks on Iraq were not planned until a later time, but American intelligence revealed possible targets, so U.S. leaders decided to strike early, sources told ABCNEWS.

"On my orders, coalition forces have begun striking selected targets of military importance," President Bush said in an address to the nation.

"We have no ambition in Iraq except to remove a threat and restore control in that country to its own people," Bush said.

Air raid sirens began howling just before daybreak, followed by about 10 minutes of anti-aircraft fire, according to ABCNEWS' Richard Engel, who is in Baghdad.

Later, another series of explosions could be heard outside the city, and subsequent bursts of explosions erupted periodically.

It was unclear exactly what the missiles hit, but sources said they were "regime targets," perhaps palaces that house the Iraqi leadership.

First official word of the attacks came from White House press spokesman Ari Fleischer around 9:45 p.m. ET.

"The opening stages of the disarmament of the Iraqi regime have begun," Fleischer told reporters, before walking away from the podium.

This is an excellent illustration of being extremely careful with the information you posess. And, as the subject indicates, who your friends are. If she considered the information to be somewhat sensitive in nature, then she could have easily: (1) kept it to herself for a future article or (2) maybe make it clear in the email to not redistribute. She obviously chose to do neither, which sort of opened the doors. Unfortunate that someone on her "distribution list" felt that everyone needed to know what went on at the World Economic Forum based on Laurie's experiences. From reading the email it really doesn't look like she has divulged any really serious world secrets. Another prime example of how to learn from one's mistakes.
