    The Arab countries vote as a bloc. They managed to pass through a resolution in the UN making blasphemy a crime. Sorry, but there are far more stupid and backward people in the world than intelligent and forward thinking ones. We can't have the Internet which is one of the greatest achievements and treasures of mankind tarnished by them.

    The US has done a pretty good job so far all things considered. Just imagine what would happen if countries like China, Russia, Iran and India got a say in it. Sorry, but these countries are simply not advanced enough to have a say in how the Internet is run. I say this as an India.

    Speaking as an Indian, I can safely say that we as a country don't deserve to have ANY control over the Internet. The US might not smell of roses, but compared to an authoritarian style government like India, they're pretty damn good.

    Actually scratch that. The Indian government is not authoritarian. It's just...stupid and uninformed and clueless. Ditto for most of the population.

    I might want to give it to my great great grandchildren a hundred years later to show them what playing games was like back in the "old days". Even today I can play games like Prince of Persia, Pacman etc. Why? Because I own those games. It's just wrong to create and sell games that will one day be impossible to play without an Internet connection.

    I don't agree that the definition changes merely because Apple has an approval process. For all practical purposes, the iPad is quite general purpose. It allows you to run programs. Apple vets them for sure, but there are almost 600,000 apps and that's pretty general for anyone.

    Given this, I think Apple should get hauled up for not allowing full featured third party browsers on the iOS platform.

    Huh? What do you mean by a "general purpose tablet"? Apple provides a platform via iOS that developers can build on top of with their third party programs. If that is not general purpose, then what is?

    Are you saying that Apple produces "specific purpose" tablets?

    Wrong analogy. Conflicts of interest are specifically forbidden in most civilized judicial systems. Personal relationships are not allowed. In your example, if the judge personally knew the accused then yes - the judge should have recused himself/herself.

    It's to do with expectations. One is expected to provide an OS merely as a platform for applications to run on it. To have an OS and to restrict what can run on it is shady. As for search, no one expects search to allow people to integrate their own mapping applications into it. Perhaps one day those expectations might arise. As of now, they don't exist.
