    Yes mate

    erm have you seen Maya on MacOS X ?
    that mate is unix with a decent scaling vector based display

    with decent graphics cards lets say an Nvidia based solution which SGI acknologes are the chips at the moment bettering anything they had (they now ship NVidia solutions) MacOS X could easyly rock (oh wait the G4 macs use Nvidia)

    if they dont care what OS they use why do the demand that Maya and Photoshop be on them ?

    yes normally I would agree but really I just saw 120 O2's go out the door in favour of Apples with OS X on running Maya + photoshop and a 500 node render farm built useing linux x86 boxs

    hey anyone here know anymore about the software they use to control the cluster

    this is not a Beowulf cluster so tools from Scyld not her and I dont think that the google tools (1million and one xterms on screen ;-) where used

    I know that you can use LSF & Gridware
    + all the beowulf tools
    BUT

    what else can you use ????

    p.s. intresting that they use renderman + maya because thats what more and more people seem to use

    SGI have to be careful because the maya release on macOS X means that alot of artists will move to the mac and ditch the SGI's UNLESS SGI can ship a decent LINUX model

    you dont have to run unix to run apache the win32 port is dreadfully easy and comes with lots of docs

    I run it when I want to be quick and dirty on an NT box with the win32 port of perl for CGI so that webfools can get to grips with things rather than screw up my systems

    apart from the network traffic which the isp should regualte anyway what does this do ?

    infects IIS servers but they run under 40% thats right UNDER now if apache had a whole like this then the world would be in for a shock !!

    but I dont belive that this could do anything except give credance to the admins who pull plugs out of walls when they are labeled

    it is not quite full JVM it is the personal java which is java 1.1 / security from 1.2

    the reason is they could not do the peers to well

    really I dont know why you would want a full JVM or how you would fit it on its all marketing speak

    what you want is midlets and such with nice graphics thats all

    a full JVM aka jdk1.3 would include SWING wich is huge and I dont see that going on a phone with limited memory !

    ok most phones run VX works from Wind (wrs)

    that ericsson + MOT + Nokia + panasonic all own Symbian and ericsson. are shipping phones built on symbian it will take a bit of a blunder on symbians part

    BUT

    the way Symbian has to do a custom GUI for each for factor i.e. recode all UE code + libs then recode apps mean that they are not starting that far behind although they have quartz + Peal + crystal, the point is that they have to do a GUI well symbian have done this for a while and have a good lib

    IF and ONLY if they present a good GUI which can integrate JAVA well then they may well be onto a winner

    the whole platform is changeing and now people are looking for a good solution where JAVA and native programing with JAVA looks good and is CHEAP

I guess at none

    your concerned that you might not get the cheapest deal but you want to have ideals

    where do you live ?

    personally I live in a place where I spend my money where I like and on what I like

    now you dont have to buy a MS product and SUN does quite well as a company

    apple does quite well

    red hat does quite well

    I dont see china 1/5 of the worlds population guv or people useing many MS product mostly because they are too poor to afford them

    now are you argueing that because you live in the United States and most people there use Microsfot products that the world uses Microsoft products ?

    its like saying that the intel pentium and x86 is the dominant microprocessor

    how many cell phones use an intel pentium ?

    get a grip

    next you will be telling me that jonathan lebed should give back the money he made beacuse people are dumb

    look from a technical point of veiw which is what I WAS TRYING to get mono seems to be a big project that needs lots of full time people working on it OR alot of time and dedication like the linux kernel which didnt appear in the last year (-;

    try and look at this in terms of lib's
    (you know what you link your programs against or dont you get that ?)

    being stupid is forgiveable if you learn from it

    that lib also has spoon() knife() etc.

    but you just use fork()

    now you want to link aganst another lib it also has fork() but NO knife() spoon() you dont need them just a fork you can

    so what has this got to do with monopolies ??

    look hailstorm is Microsoft and passport is microsoft YOU DONT HAVE TO USE THEM !

    I wont and I think there might be problems with the laws in differant countrys so frankly my dear ....

    I care that people seem to think that mono can provide a solution to the libary problem

    personally I would like to see a transform from the lib to a native lib rather than doing it @ run time look yes MS has done it for lots of langs but lets face it lots of people worked on it and the boreing libs now they expect people to do the drudgery of cloneing this or should I say writeing it from the spec

    sorry but the java VM gets my vote before this IL from microsoft I mean I still dont understand how you can have pointers and make it work well

    I have spent hours apon Hours playing the simple tron game when pissed aganst pissed mates (pissed =drunk/tipsy)

    tho I have never seen the film

    look forward to it whats the remake about ?

    the orginal I though was getting the IP back from the guv and rideing bikes in a computer world as far as I could work out

    hey

    look why did microsoft invest a whole bunch of R&D monies in an IL when they could just do "normal compilers" like they had done and could do it very well

    well LIB's and those .so on windows (they call them DLL's on win32) SIMPLE

    thats it

    Microsoft had a nightmare with libs and useing VB and C++ caused a nightmare beacuse of all the old API's so they wanted all langs to have the same libs

    now +COM did not live up to what it had promised and the standard way of delivering it in a standard way

    CORBA on the other hand has this and each Object can interact with others and can use the Corba Component Model (CCM) java 2 has an ORB GNOME has an ORB whats the problem ?

    people think they have a better way just use the simple it works solution IMHO

    sort it out KDE is JUST C++ and thats why they dont get these problems

    hey its multiplatform how does it run on a solaris 8 machine they seem to all have gcc on
    (I recomend gcc 3.1 because it can do 64bit and C++ well but most have gcc 2.95)

    its GPL so someone should look @ porting it

    lack of solaris boxen here but UNI is FULL of them

    also lots of edu use solaris so this would be a good job to get kudos from borland

    where to start (-;

    the 720 if I recall is a StrongARM powered ( info on devices http://arm.sourceforge.net )

    now yes you can get netBSD 1.5.1 for it but you have to do some hacking but there is a step by step guide somewhere

    linux wise you can get the source for the kernel @ http://www.arm.linux.org.uk Mr R. King has done alot of work so say thank you to him (dont pester him he wont answer just join the mailing list )

    you can also get the familar project up and running from http://www.handhelds.org

    Debian is achived by http://intimate.handhelds.org/develstructure.shtml so apt into it (-;

    what rateing does this have ?

    laptop drives have printed on them the pressures it can take and the amount of shock they can take

    this is for when you take your laptop flying plus for DOD to know when they are building those flying machines they send around china

    so does thig go well ?

    my handheld could do with 5GB (-;

    what would you use it for ?
    (excludeing Jpeg and Mpeg(thats MP3's))

    PSION have some nice patents

    like that keyboard

    they are perfect for connecting to RS232 ports and sitting in lectures despirately trying to deal with the slashdot effect on your webserver through your mobile phone and a terminal

    but remeber that it was the wavefinder that killed them kerbango was a cock up and psion did not learn from them

    psion make alot of things for the supermarkets like you see those guys holding when they do the stock take so they will not disapear

    symbian seems to have its head screwed on right so its not all gloom and doom

    hmm have a mobile phone yep 99.8 % that its power by an ARM chip or plystation2 / N64 that will be a mips chip then so compare that against PCs

    in terms of volume shipments of 32bit chips P4 or G4 dont even feature on the pie chart

    get with it the new palm is going to ARM powered just like the newton

    68000 is a toy nothing else
    you want power then use the StrongARM2 aka Xscale (ARM5TE)

    get with the time boys and girls

    oh where a linux shop they say !
    (expecpt for all the users admin guys and domain servers )

    mostly we see that places are a UNIX shop and its HP or SUN now under solaris I'm sorry but oracle does rock !
    all the perf tests beat DB2
    + there are alot of people who know admin + tuneing so geting support is Very good

    DB2 works well if you are a IBM customer and are useing WebSphere and have a mainframe /NT box that you might upgrade and dont have a clue about admin or real tuning

    free DB's need very little work to get to run but to get to run well on high workloads they are a nightmare SUN + Oracle make a nice partners but I dont like there prices either

    but I still pay

    a indexing app called medusa was going to be in gnome 1.4 but leaked file descripters so was put back to 2.0

    this does it so does MACOS-X has it built in infact so does MACOS-9

    win2k does it but they have fudged the looking into files to only look inside MS format files so no PDF searching for you

    basically I would recomend the apple Powerbook/(mac with LCD) if you are into docs and do lots of reading from the screen

    linux is getting there and you can always just set up http dig or pay for a HTML serach util and interface through that after all that all you where doing before !

    hey

    you need to tell people a little more does "XINU" use x86 alpha PowerPC SPARC ARM SH or gromit ??

    so what functions do you need ?
    bootstrap on lots of system or just x86 ?

    I have to say work on GRUB

    bootp gets IP address do you need to store that can you boot from normal disk ? ie does it load IP/TCP|UDP cfg from a file if not this would be the first port of call

    have a look @ GRUB
